Eledhwen on TeaspoonWhy this must be read:This story paints a compelling and convincing picture of Lucia Moretti (mother of Alice Carter), the 60's and 70's Torchwood, and the world surrounding them.
Jack as seen through Lucia's eyes is recognizably Jack, but still different in ways that match what we know of him in that period, and the revolving cast of secondary characters are all very well drawn. Lucia herself is sympathetic and sensible, and the way her relationship with Jack develops is quite realistic. Indeed, one of the many things I like about this story is that it makes neither Jack nor Lucia into the villain, while still leaving plenty of reasons for regrets and future bitterness.
Excerpt: Lucia Moretti had been working for Torchwood Three, Cardiff, for almost nine days when she met Captain Jack Harkness for the first time. Her boss, introducing the team, had given her some warning: "Oh, and there's Harkness – freelancer, really, but he's in and out. He'll flirt. Ignore him." The medical officer, David, had added darkly that Harkness was "a bit of an oddity. And really, Bill's not joking about the flirting. That man would flirt with a corpse."
She had not had much time to think about the elusive captain, what with the introduction to the new job. Astrophysics had, as it turned out, little to do with what really went on below the Cardiff streets, and a week in Lucia was developing muscles in places she did not know she had them, and bruises in places she thought were impossible to bruise. She'd brought down her first alien on her third day – one of the sewer-dwelling things Torchwood called 'weevils' – and, along with the rest of the team, had repelled an invasion of Earth on her seventh day. Apparently Sundays were not rest days if you worked for Torchwood.
