Fandom: Canadian Actor RPF Pairing: Callum Keith Rennie/Katee Sackhoff Length: 920 words or so Author on LJ: cricketsAuthor Website: Complete Fic/Vid ListingWhy this must be read: Written during the '07 WGA strike, this is a quiet, thoughtful sort of story; hot and sad and somehow still hopeful at the same time. There's so much chemistry between Callum and Katee and crickets uses that in a novel way. Sex doesn't drive this story; longing does. ( Small taste of Crickets' genius... )3am

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS UK Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 1,390 Author on LJ: thesmallhobbitAuthor Website: via tags at the LJ Why this must be read: This author is a relative newcomer to the fandom, and it's a delight to see that, after all this time, there are still writers being drawn into writing old-style LoM casefic. The fic has a simplicity of style and economy of language that gives the reader just enough to 'see' vividly the events of the story. In particular, the dialogue and action of the characters are true to canon in a pleasingly low key and often laconic way. I must admit, I'd love to see something substantially longer from this writer - in the meantime, this will do nicely! (I'd advise readers to check out her drabbles too - there are some proper crackers in there. :) ) AMNESIA

Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: unoshot Author Website: Small Obsessions Why this must be read: This author is one of the best at demonstarting who and what Castiel really is. He’s an angel and he might be Dean’s friend but he’s not here to coddle or cuddle, he has a job to do. It’s just spectacular. ( Excerpt )In Excelsis

Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Morgana/Various (Uther, Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Gwen) Length: 19k Author on LJ: captanddeastarAuthor Website: Fic on AO3Why this must be read:The author's summary says "Morgana tells Merlin about waking up from a dream of a future in which she's pregnant. Each of the five parts posits a different father for Morgana's child, and the future that goes along with that possibility." But it's more than that, it's a five wonderfully realised, but very different AUs; the Arthur/Morgana section is charming, the Morgana/Merlin one sexy, and the Gwen/Morgana is utterly heart-rending. It's a fascinating look at the position of women in Cameot, and it's an astonishing character study of Morgana herself. “Despite my express order that you are to marry the king of Gore,” Uther begins, “You have gone against my wishes and humiliated me in front of this court and all of the—”
“Forgive me, Father,” Arthur calls, stepping forward from the side of the audience chamber, his face contrite.
“You, Arthur?” Uther asks, looking amazed.
“Yes, Father,” Arthur sighs. “I beg your forgiveness. I knew that Morgana was promised to Urien, but when I discovered that, for all these years, her disdainful and shrewish behavior toward me has only been a futile attempt to conceal her overwhelming attraction to me, I was overcome by my own love for her – which I had for so long believed to be hopeless – and succumbed to my emotions, in spite of my better judgment. Father, the fault is entirely mine – I should have been strong enough to resist, but in the face of such sincere and deeply felt affection, I was powerless. If one of us is to be punished, it should be me, Father,” Arthur concludes, with wide and guileless eyes.
Uther turns to Morgana. “Is this true, Morgana?”
“It is, my lord,” Morgana says, appearing to be suffering from some sort of affliction of the muscles of the face. “Every word of it, exactly as Arthur has said.”Before the Morning Watch: One Vision and Five Future
