Greetings to all passengers. I'm [livejournal.com profile] darthcynique, your driver for the Star Wars section this month. I apologize for the very late start. Most of my recs will be gen, because it's what I tend to read, with some het for dessert.

Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Padmé/Anakin, but it is not the focus of the story.
Length: 1,188 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rosaxx50
Author Website: fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read:
This one is for everyone who thought dying of a "broken heart" wasn't a believable end for a character like Padmé Amidala. This story gives us an eye-opening look at what could have been going on in Padmé's head on Polis Massa. Without contradicting canon, this story shows how her death may have been an act of strength, an act of love, a conscious decision that stemmed directly from the self-sacrificing compassion that defined her character. It's one of the rare fanfics that don't reduce Padmé's character to her feelings for Anakin. Here, she gives up her life not because she can't live believing Anakin doesn't love her anymore, or because her children aren't enough of a reason to live, but because she loves them enough to die for them. This story portrays her death as an act of willpower, not weakness.

A tragic and heartbreaking fic and a must-read whether you liked or hated the way Padmé died in ROTS.

06:02 pm That Was The First Time by futuresoon
Fandom: ANIME/MANGA - BACCANO!
Pairing: Claire/Chane, Jacuzzi/Nice
Length: 9K
Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: AO3
Why this must be read:

Baccano! is a series that mashes a bunch of weird elements, out-of-sequence storytelling, and turns out fabulous. Immortal gangsters, a train massacre and the Roaring Twenties seems like a potential disaster, but Baccano! is an example of how sometimes anime is just plain weird, but utterly engrossing.

I'm reccing That Was The First Time because it tells a light-hearted story using the perfect voice for Jacuzzi Splot that fits nicely as a potential epilogue to the anime.

Fandom: Young Dracula
Pairing: Robin Branagh / Vlad Dracula
Length: c. 500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] chibimarchy
Author Website: Fanfic Master Post
Why this must be read:

This is part of an ongoing series of ficlets which can be read alone, or together. In this one Vlad gets upset and tells Robin to prove he isn't afraid of his best friend's new vampire status. It's my favourite in the series because it really captures the teen angst aspect of this pairing: can my crush ever like me back?

Fandom: AMERICAN IDOL
Pairing: Kris Allen/Adam Lambert
Length: one-shot
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] holycitygirl
Author Website: on her LJ
Why this must be read: Holycitygirl is adept at mixing laugh-out-loud humor with exquisite prose and imagery. This is one of my favorites from her, it has so many things that I love: Jealous!Adam, Kris being clueless and adorable, and a perfect Katy cameo that's funny and sort-of sad at the same time. This is a very entertaining fast read but the meat is really in how well holycitygirl uses words. Her writing is the true embodiment of the phrase "quality not quantity". Go and take it in, and don't forget to leave the author some love.

10:26 pm Shuffling Cards by Misprint (K)
Fandom: NEWSIES
Pairing: Racetrack/Skittery
Length: 2,300
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] graciebird
Author Website: FFnet profile
Why this must be read: Skittery broke up with his girlfriend and everyone thinks he's crazy -- except Racetrack.

Slash set in 1899 can be a hard sell, since it wasn't exactly a time that was welcoming and friendly for homosexuality -- the word itself didn't even exist yet. This fic (which was one of the first in the fandom that I ever read, lo those many years ago, and I still consider it one of the best) approaches it from another tack, as an undercurrent between two characters.

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Draco/Pansy
Length: ~3,000
Author on LJ: [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com]
Author Website: Memories
Why this must be read:

This is the piece that made me fall in love with Draco and Pansy as a pairing, the author has a great understanding of their relationship and the way she wrote the dynamic between them had me searching every last Harry Potter archive I could think of for more stories featuring these two.

11:02 pm Safe in My Home by Sue David and Valerie Wells (PG-13)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: none
Length: long
Author on LJ: not known
Author Website: HERE
Why this must be read: I like this story because there is Starsky's past, present and his future. We learn a lot about his childhood and Hutch is there all the time. There is also a case, one unsolved for over twenty years and a happy ending. There is Hutch hurt/comfort and Starsky angst. And most of all – it’s long and thrilling.

It took several rings, but finally Hutch answered, groggy, "H'lo?"

"Me," Starsky said.

"Starsk? What's wrong?" Hutch was suddenly wide-awake.

"Nothin'." Starsky sighed. "Everything. I had a dream. About my dad's death."

At his end, Hutch was more than a little puzzled, but he could hear a note of pain in his partner's voice that he didn't like at all. "Tell me."

Starsky did, haltingly, his voice shaking and the tears coming to his eyes again as he talked. Hutch listened in complete silence until he was finished.

"Is that how it really happened?"

"Yeah." Starsky used a corner of sheet to wipe his eyes; grateful Hutch couldn't see his tears, though he knew his partner knew him well enough to hear the tears in his voice. "Just like that."
