Why this vid kicks ass: There aren't a lot of vids out there (yet) for NCIS: LA, but this one is a nice, punchy intro to the show. You get a glimpse of the cast, a feel for the energy of the show. I think it nicely hints at the playfulness of the series, while teasing us to find out more.

Why this must be read: because [livejournal.com profile] mizface took the AU bit from her 10-word-fic-meme and turned in into a huge, complex story, in which she switches Ray Kowalski for Ray Vecchio and rewrites the first two seasons of the show.

It's an amazing feat, and [livejournal.com profile] mizface did a wonderful job with it. One Ray cannot simply be substituted for another, and so the changes to the episodes are varied, some subtle, some not so much, but the differences extend outward like ripples on a lake. Maybe a lake they call Michigan.

The story ends at the end of season two, but luckily for us, [livejournal.com profile] mizface is already hard at work on a sequel. This really is a awesome story, and [livejournal.com profile] mizface spent a tremendous amount of time crafting it. And it shows.

Why this must be read:

This world is going to end. And the Enterprise is the only thing that can save it. It only takes the end of the world for Kirk and Spock to have a conversation. I love this fic, but it’s hard for me to describe because I’d hate to spoil it. Just know that it’s awesome, and if the  movie had resulted in a TV series, this would have made an excellent episode - even with (most, not all) of the slashy bits parts left intact.

Why this must be read:

Because while reading the books I always felt that Luna was the one person that Harry could really let his guard down around, she understands and accepts him in a way that no one else does and this author does a great job of showing their intimate connection in this piece.

"Do you remember when we first met?" Harry asks somewhere between the fourth and fifth floor session.

"Yes," Luna says firmly. She flicks her wand so the stars on the ceiling arrange themselves into a new pattern. "You were quite possibly the saddest boy I'd ever seen."

The blunt honesty she forever shows will never lose its bitter sting, but it's always worth it. She frowns, eyebrows knit in concentration. She looks as though she's recalling all the memories that prove her right, and Harry aches remembering them with her. His loneliness is not something he likes to dwell on.

"No one seemed to notice," she says. It's a surprise, but from Luna he expects nothing less anymore.

"You did," he says.

Why this must be read: it’s just a stakeout conversation, but there is so much happening that any ‘what if’ scenario must have a happy ending. :)

"Now hear me out, 'kay?" He didn't wait for a nod or a shake of the blond head. "If I fell off that cliff, would you come after me?"

Hutchinson sat upright and turned slightly toward his partner. "What kind of question is that? Besides, they jumped off, together, remember?" Irritated condescension stole into his tone. Of course he remembers. He's - we've - seen it five or six times.

"Of course I remember, dummy. But that was Butch and the Kid. I'm talkin' about you an' me."

Though it was hard to read Starsky's indigo eyes in the faint light, Hutch could feel his muscles tense and hear his breathing deepen. He knew first-hand of Starsky's fear of heights, and even flying to some extent. Yet he always seemed to be the first one to take on acrophobia-inflaming situations, as if he were thumbing his nose at the circumstances, or trying to deal with his fear by immersing himself in it. Maybe it's not such a stupid question after all. "No, I wouldn't." The light was good enough for him to see Starsky's eyes widen. "I'd catch you before you could fall." Simple, matter-of-fact.

Why this must be read: I have a secret weakness for Gathering fics in which the world doesn't end, and this one is pretty much perfect. Snappy dialogue, great characterization, and really good writing. (And to top it off, it seems to be Aria's first HL fic!)

Duncan twisted the damp cloth one last time, watching the water swirl down the sink pink, then clear. He looked up. Methos was shaking out a match, smoke curling from his fingers for a moment illuminated by flickering candlelight, his face in shadow. Duncan flapped out the cloth and draped it over the edge of the sink. "I'll bet you do."

Why this must be read:
Yes, it's Obidala, and it's good enough to get a rec from a non-shipper. This story has one of the best characterizations of Padmé I have ever seen. The author does a great job at capturing the dichotomy of Padmé's character – the constant conflict between her head and her heart, between stubbornness and compassion. Obi-Wan, too, is in character, and there is an almost Han/Leia-esque chemistry between them. Wow, I say.

Why this must be read:

In a timeline where the Vulcans never allowed Earth freedom from their oversight, Jim Kirk doesn't fit in. All he needs to get away is a fast ship and a crew as crazy as he is; luckily, some things are universal constants. Sigh…I hove this fic- basically a Pirate AU (yet another popular trope) what with the stealing and starting wars, but there is such heart and teamwork/camaraderie that it makes my heart happy. It’s an ensemble story just how I love it. Kirk is brilliant and crazy, and everyone is along for the ride being brilliant and a little crazy in their own way.

Looking for a Place to Happen

I saved a gorgeous, absolute must-read story for my last rec of the month.

Fandom: STAR WARS prequel
Pairing: Anakin/Padmé

Why this must be read: Because if the Anakin/Padmé scenes in the movies were like this, the pairing would rival Han/Leia in popularity. Okay, no, nothing could ever rival Han/Leia, but it would be close.

VaderLVR64 is probably the most prolific fanfiction author on the TFN boards, and one of the best. Of her many rec-worthy fics, I chose to rec this one because it is an absolutely amazing piece of tragic beauty.

Anakin and Padmé are outside during a thunderstorm on Naboo. He likes the storm; she doesn't. And as one reviewer put it, the dialogue in this story is ten times more passionate than any of the conversations Anakin and Padmé have in the movies. And the author accomplishes this while keeping both of them perfectly in character.

Those who know me can tell you it's almost impossible to make me like a romance fic with this pairing. This fic is the greatest exception to that rule.
