Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Pairing: Doctor/Master (Eight/Roberts!Master) Length: 4,325 words Author on LJ: roachpatrolAuthor Website: roachpatrol's page at TeaspoonWhy this must be read:It has been observed that, considering the Eighth Doctor's more-than-usually loopy state in "Doctor Who: The Enemy Within," the Master's plan is really unnecessarily convoluted. Of course, the Master's plans always are unnecessarily convoluted, and considering he'd just stolen a fast-decaying human body after having been a psychic goo-snake, one may imagine that Roberts!Master wasn't thinking all that clearly. Still, as this story points out, it's sort of a shame it didn't occur to him to just leave a trail of candies on the hospital floor, and wait for the Doctor to come to him. But then there arises the question of what the Master's going to do with a trusting, mostly-naked, amnesiac Eight. ( Explaining to the Doctor that they are in fact enemies who have battled across the stars for centuries does not seem to make the slightest bit of difference to the Doctor's relentless, clingy bonhomie. The part where the Master gloats as the Doctor realizes his incipient mortality is going to have to be put on hold, at least until the man masters the concept of trousers and how you can't put both your legs through one hole at the same time, no, stop that, you do it like this. )Featuring jelly babies, the Imperial Kitten Appreciation Hour, and Roberts!Master as an actual developed character: Any Time At All

Fandom: Supernatural Vidder: Ancasta Musical artist: Florence and the Machine Pairing: gen, Harvelles-centric Vidder on LJ: ancastarVidder's website: Ancasta's CornerWhy this vid kicks ass:I found this fanvid featuring Jo and Ellen Harvelle through thefourthvine, and I think she and the creator, Ancasta, can explain better than I. Ancasta: I hadn't heard Florence and the Machine before. To me, their sound is reminiscent of Kate Bush, with her over-the-top emotion and theatricality ... I'd wished like anything the song's gender wasn't set, because with lyrics about sacrifice and death, how could I not think of the Brothers Winchester? Then "Abandon All Hope" aired, and I realized this song might in fact be meant for Supernatural regardless.
thefourthvine: I have no idea who the first main character of this vid is ... I don't know who the second main character is, either, but I am guessing she's the first one's mother. [Ed. -- She's right.] Which just makes the line about raising up the offering extra painful, and also extra appropriate ... But even though neither Best Beloved nor I could identify the women this vid is about, we cared about them; it turns out that three minutes is totally enough to get invested ... We cared about them, we liked them, and we both ended the vid actually crying. That is a feat of vidding roughly equivalent to writing a complete story, including both a mystery and a romance, in 100 words - taking us from "who the hell is that?" to "OH MY GOD NOOOOOO" in one viewing of a single vid is impressive. And that's why I'm recommending it: it made me care. It made the life of these fictional women matter to me. Rabbit-Hearted Girl (Raise It Up)

Fandom: White Collar Vidder: Greensilver Musical artist: Elvis Costello Pairing: OT3 of Neal/Peter/El Vidder on LJ: greensilverVidder's website: metatexturalWhy this vid kicks ass:Has there ever been a better pairing of song and fandom? I think not! Furthermore, it's a gorgeous vid that makes clever use of the source material's visual flourishes, presents the protagonists' personalities clearly, and lays out a lucid narrative. By the end, you'd swear that the OT3 is canon. Download of "Let's Misbehave" available here.

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: Gibbs/DiNozzo Length: 1,740 words Author on LJ: bloodyfandom Author Website: None that I'm aware of. Why this must be read: bloodyfandom is one author I knew I wanted to rec when I was given the pleasure of driving the van for NCIS but I've spent most of the month debating with myself which of her stories to recommend. I truly adore them all so it was incredibly difficult to pick just one. "Little Revelations" begins with a team basketball game and ends with an extremely funny one-liner from Tony. I've read this story a couple of dozen times since its been published and I still laugh at that last line because not only does it ring true, but I can totally hear Tony say it. Go read it now. Then when you're done go read everything else this mostly evil author has written. You'll thank me in the morning. Little Revelations

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Length: 20k Author on LJ: elementalvAuthor Website: Elemental VisionWhy this must be read:Because elementalv took an amusing premise and several unlikely tropes and turned out a pitch-perfect story. Her writing is superb. It's spare and leaves a lot to the imagination in the best possible way. The style works remarkably well in Ray's voice; it ends up reading like a sort of cagey narrative, with blunt, rough adjectives and a structure that sounds like it could have easily come from RayK. Also, the OCs here are especially worth noting, since they're responsible for my two favorite moments. In fact, here's the start of one of them: ( Excerpt )Tilt

Fandom: STAR WARS Pairing: Luke/everybody Length: ~800 words Author on LJ: I don't think she has one Author's Website: Her site Why this fic must be read:The Force might be said to have inspired this story, as in the very first time we hear of that entity, via Old Ben's "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It binds the universe together." Han, Leia, Luke and Vader are bound in the ever-flexing loops of a daisy chain during the most intimate act in life. Just when you thought it might be a neat thing to be a Skywalker, think again. There is no privacy. Daisies
