12:09 pm The Perils of Urban Warfare by phantomjam (PG-13)
Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: John/Sherlock
Length: 7,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] phantomjam
Author Website: Fanfiction Masterlist
Why this must be read:
This is a story about John and why he and Sherlock get along so well together. John's... not quite normal, although he appears that way to most. This story is framed around visits to John's therapist and his confused but deliberate choice to define himself as as not-quite-normal and use Sherlock as a substitute for therapy. This writer's prose is snappy, crisp, and brilliant. This is an example of how the very best professional writers write short stories -- with every word carefully chosen and sentences that sing. All that technical brilliance, and also an incredibly engaging story. I highly recommend this one.

Fandom: RAFFLES / AMELIA PEABODY / LORD PETER WIMSEY
Pairing: none
Length: 1,412 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] traboule
Author Website: FanFiction.net
Why this must be read:

I actually have never read a word of the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters or Lord Peter Wimsey by Dorothy L. Sayers. However, what could be better than two precocious kids and England's most famous gentleman cricketer?

04:55 pm Five Times Nicholas said "I Love You" (G)
Fandom: HOT FUZZ
Pairing: Nicholas Angel/Danny Butterman
Length: 1000 words
Author: [livejournal.com profile] zeddish
Location of fic: [livejournal.com profile] sandfordpolice
Why this must be read:

Those three little words, "I Love You", hold a lot of meaning, but there's more than one way to say it than you think. This is a sweetly understated fic worth checking out.

Excerpt:

"There's got to be somebody," Danny said, looking round the pub again. "Nobody in here strikes your fancy?"

"Well," Nicholas started without casting so much as a glance over his shoulder. "There is one person, but I think that goes without saying."

06:52 pm oceans swallow you whole by angeldylan618 (PG13)
Fandom: LOST
Characters/Pairings: Desmond/Sayid
Length: 1137
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] angeldylan628
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] soapboxblues
Why this must be read: Desmond and Sayid are such a dream team, and this fic gives one of the most sensitive treatments of their dynamic (which you can read as friendship or more, as you choose) I've ever come across. There's such a sense of hope that Desmond gives to depressed Ocean 6 era Sayid.

10:13 pm Normality is Such an Over-rated Word, by Katja (PG)

Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: Jensen/Cougar, Pooch/Jolene, with hints of Roque/Clay
Length: 3466
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] merry_gentry
Author's Website: Fanfiction Master List

Why this must be read:
Written in response to the prompt "Clay wondered if his life would be any easier if his unit had all been human. He figures, probably not.", this is a fantastic series which blends the paranormal deftly into canon with all the right touches. Clay can make people do what he wants. Roque is a hellfiend - literally. Pooch innately knows how to fix anything. Jensen can wind his way through the most complicated systems without touching a keyboard. And Cougar? Cougar can turn into a cougar.

It's subtle and in-character and it's incredibly well-done. The second story is a series of origin vignettes, which all hit my narrative kinks so hard, and the third is ridiculously adorable. To the point of inducing cavities.

Excerpt:
People don’t like it when other people can turn into huge vicious cats at will. It makes them wonder about the safety of certain arteries in their necks and just what those sharp teeth and big, clawed paws could do to them.

And so Cougar got all the shit jobs. The suicide runs. And he survived again and again and again and he stopped talking when he didn’t have to – although who did he have to talk to, when his own team-mates barely said more than three words at a time to him? He kept his head down and his eyes covered by the shadow of his hat brim and he did what he was told.

And then Cougar got transferred to Lieutenant Colonel Franklin Clay’s team.

It’s a little difficult to feel like the weird one when there’s a tech-ghost and a hell-fiend on the same team as you.

11:25 pm Missing by Luna_dove (PG-13)
Fandom: WAREHOUSE 13
Pairing: Artie/Claudia
Length: 10 parts. Fairly long.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luna_dove

Why this must be read:

I usally don't read Artie/Claudia for one simple reason. He's old enough to be her Dad! Ew ew ew...
This one however, blows past all my prejudices against May/December relationships. Luna_Dove has written a lovely story dealing with kidnappings, angst, and loyalty. Her Claudia is possibly one of my favourite out there.

"What happened?" She asked, staring from Pete to Myka, who were still glaring at each other.

"Claudia." Pete knelt down next to her, like she was some damn child. She could feel her chest raising and falling faster and faster as she anticipated the next words that came out of Pete's mouth.

"Artie's gone."
