Fandom: RIPTIDE
Pairing: Murray Bozinsky/Lt. Ted Quinlan
Length: 4000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] little_tristan
Author Website: Tanzer on Double Your Pleasure
Why this must be read:
There's plenty of onscreen UST between everyone's favorite geek, Murray Bozinsky, and hardass Lt. Ted Quinlan of the King Harbor PD. But until recently, there was no slash fic!

Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] little_tristan has stepped into the breach. This story is the first of the Catbread series. Ted's been injured, and Murray does him a favor--and despite Ted's bad grace (competely in-character and awesome) Murray helps him just as much as he needs.

And then both Ted and Murray figure out that they both need a little more. [livejournal.com profile] little_tristan does an awesome job with these guys. The story is told with a certain objectivity which works incredibly well for Murray's POV--you can *feel* the little guy holding himself at arm's length, almost being an observer, and as the fic goes on he becomes more and more involved.

You can find the whole Catbread series here.

Why this must be read: For me the strength of any AU lies in the way the characters are treated. They should be recognizable as themselves but different. There always should be the thought in my head that this might be possible.
This story shows how taking the characters out of canon and into a different and strange situation can highlight their essential characteristics. All of them are so very much themselves.

This story's strength doesn't lie in the characterization alone though. The plot is realistic and well thought out, and the story is gripping and intense. I couldn't stop reading once I started even though I was skeptical when I read the summary.

This is a story I'll keep coming back to.

Pairing: Team gen
Length: 3,000ish

Author Website: None.
Why this must be read: It’s clever and it’s funny! The author has all the team members caught so beautifully that you can practically hear them saying their lines. Stephen is used to meeting strange things via the anomalies, but this one is stranger than most.

I think this excerpt sums it up nicely : "Oh! You mean dinosaurs?" the creature exclaimed. "They're my distant relatives, in a tangled sort of fashion. Though I never liked them much myself. You know what family reunions are like. They're the strange cousins you don't like, but have to invite because Aunty Gladys will be offended if you don't."

Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: none (gen)
Length: 3,900 words

Why this must be read:
This story uses parallel structure to illustrate the evolution of the Holmes brothers, giving the readers psychological insight into the characters, using spare but beautiful prose to pack a mighty wallop. Heed the author's warnings, but do give this a try. It's about exactly what the title says... Sherlock and Mycroft and how they learn to care.

Note that this story is part of a loose series that can be found on the author's fic community, linked above. I highly recommend everything there.

08:58 pm Stay In The Kitchen (When The Kitchen Gets Hot), by greatunironic (R)
Fandom: The Losers
Pairing: girl!Jensen/Cougar
Length: 9323
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] greatunironic

Why this must be read:
Tight, snappy, funny, wacky and beyond delightful, Jacobina Jensen is trying to figure out how to cope with her love for Cougar while also being no longer the only girl on the team. Becoming BFFs with Aisha might freak everyone out, but there's shopping to be had, and drives to hack into, and Nazi gold to be drunk. And if Cougar finally sees past the boy-sized cargo pants and borrowed flannel shirts, then it's all good.

And the epilogue is hilarious.

Excerpt:
They’re completely different, the two of them, stuck in a shitty two floor, four bedroom in Shitty Pasadena, the shithole. They’re two-fifths of an elite and misguided mission to destroy some dude called Max, but she’s a hot ass and Jensen an awkward white chick. One of them probably has knives in her hair and the other one forgets she owns a gun. Aisha probably never had to walk through a desert in drag before.

But, fuck, she’s the only close female contact that she has that isn’t nine or post-baby hormonal crazy. It like she’s in Y: The Last Man and she’s Yorick and Aisha’s her Ampersand and it’s all the women who died, not the men. Cougar, of course, is 355. It is so unbelievably sad, she reflects.

Why this must be read:

Pete introduces Claudia to one of his favourite bands and true to form the Warehouse crushes his fondest memories. I just love how in this fandom everything in the world can be traced back to an artifact. Nothing is sacred.

"Unbelievable! Especially for you of all people!” Pete exclaimed as he sat on the couch at the B&B and pointed his index finger at Claudia. “You, who can quote every word ever said or spoken by David Bowie, and whose MP3 player is chock full of classic rock rebels, does not like the Grateful Dead?”
