Fandom: MERLIN Pairing: Morgana/Gwen with background Arthur/Merlin Length: 12,000 Author on LJ: allothiAuthor website: Her AO3Why this must be read: Um, this must be read because it's an AU where Morgana and Arthur are superheroes and Gwen and Merlin are their butlers with aspirations of their own. It's laugh-out-loud funny and puts the "crack" in crack_van, but also manages to have poignantly drawn relationships and characterizations at the same time. Even if femmeslash isn't really your thing, you must give this fic a try. The humor and Pendragon-sibling dynamics alone are totally worth it. The sword makes Arthur-the-insufferable insanely jealous. This is because not only is Arthur an insufferable twonk whom far too many people believe is heart-stoppingly gorgeous; Arthur is also Le Fay's self-loving, mediawhoring, horrible-quipping, far-too-full-of-it pratbastard of a superhero rival, Pendragon.
(They found out each other's secret identities thanks to a mix-up at the dry cleaners. That was the moment Morgana realised that their rivalry would be, like love in a pop song or the emptiness in Arthur's skull, eternal.)As Soon As I Am Able

Fandom:STARSKY and HUTCHPairing:NoneLength:long Author on LJ:unknownAuthor Website:http://starskyhutcharchive.com/stories.php?genre=gen&authid=36Why this must be read: This is a sad story about something bad that happened to Hutch when he was young. He wasn't molested or anything like that, but it was so traumatic that he has suppressed it deep inside of himself and he doesn't remember until he is on a call with Starsky. In this story Starsky is so loving and loyal and protective. It is a really good read. ( Read more... )

Fandom:STAR WARS Pairing: None Length: 731 words Author on LJ: I don't think she has one. Website: FFN profileWhy this must be read:Today is March 4th, and we march forth into the horror realms of Star Wars with a grisly little story, filled with characterization and detail. It's chilling, and not only because it has to do with bath time. Blood Bath

Fandom: DC COMICS Pairing: None Length: 2813 words Author on LJ: silvre_musgraveWebsite: FFN profileWhy this must be read:This entry is double-tagged because Doc Savage is the main character in as venerable a franchise (published by both Marvel and DC) as anyone could think of. In this series of ficlets, Doc and his companions emerge as both human and larger-than-life as they deal with their roles as non-super-powered heroes from the 86th floor of (implicitly) the Empire State Building. crack_van encourages reccing 'personal favorites' and this franchise has been one of mine since 1964; what a thrill when Mike W. Barr wrote a DC series, and other authors afterwards. The 86th Floor

Fandom: VORKOSIVERSE Pairing: Ekaterin/Miles Length: short Author on LJ: sahiyaAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read:"Because Ekaterin is awesome" is true but probably not enough of a reason. sahiya is one of the best authors in fandom, and this fic is a prime example of the strengths of a Five Things fic. We don't meet Ekaterin in canon until she is thirty, with ten years of heartbreaking and soul-crushing marriage to an abusive man. That she has survived as well as she has, and learns to stop being afraid and claim her own strength and agency afterwards, show just what kind of strength she learned in those ten years, buried deep where her husband couldn't touch it. These five things explore what she might have been like, at twenty, without the pain and heartache, but also without the wisdom and maturity she learned with such cost. All of these ways are very plausible, and very true to the characters as we know them, and all of them tug on your heart, either wishing that things could have happened like that or glad that they didn't. Regret . . . And what if she and Miles had met at twenty, instead of she and Tien? It had been possible; she'd been a student at the Vorbarra District University, he'd been a newly minted officer in and out of the capital. If their paths had crossed, might she have won a less bitter life? - pp. 534, A Civil Campaign( snippet )Five Ways Ekaterin Never Met Miles at Twenty

Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Pairing: Giles/Jenny Length: 1,593 Author on LJ: dollsomeAuthor Website: Fanfiction Master ListWhy this must be read:This piece is just so wonderfully in character with the humor and sexual tension that made me fall in love with Giles and Jenny as a pairing in the first place. dollsome really captures their relationship in this story, they're just so adorable and perfect for each other. She introduces herself as Jenny and he insists upon calling her Ms. Calendar and she decides that he’s a snob and he mentally dubs her insufferable and that’s that, thank you very much.Distractions

Fandom: Canadian Actor RPF Pairing: Callum Keith Rennie/Hugh Dillon Length: 1,070 words Author on LJ: imaginethetruth Author website: fic tag on LJWhy this must be read: Imaginethetruth takes some of Noel's observations about Callum and Hugh on the Hard Core Logo as a starting point for this lovely little story that gets better with each reading, and an ending that makes you want more. Her Hugh in particular stands out: passionate and even tender with those in his circle, while everyone else can cheerfully fuck off. Fandom: STAR TREK:REBOOT Characters/Pairings: Spock Prime/Reboot Kirk Length: ~1900 Author on LJ: blcwriter Author Website: Why this must be read: If you look at that pairing and think, 'No thank you'! this is the fic for you. It's unsetting and dark and squicky as hell, but it feels in character. One of the more common tropes to arise from the Reboot (especially within the Kirk/Spock segment) is Yenta!Spock who spends much of his time making sure the roboot versions of Kirk and Spock get together. This is *not* one of those stories.
