Author Website:Uncle Charlie on Fan Fiction
Why this must be read:

Uncle Charlie has been writing fan fiction since the mid-60s and it shows. Her stores are well written and beautifully crafted. Even her accents are spot on. This story is taken from an intriguing series she got into called “Working Stiffs” in which various people with “ordinary” jobs at UNCLE have a slice of life story. This is the first one I read in which we don’t see life or death in front of us. Instead, we get a close look at a very human, very worried Illya Kuryakin from a janitor’s point of view. And the janitor proves that he may speak simply and have a “menial” job but that doesn’t mean he’s stupid.

(Insert: “And believe you me, working in the cafeteria, you need to know how to keep your mouth shut, 'cause no one else is. You would not believe what folks talk about in the cafeteria…the canteen, my Dad woulda called it. They yap and yap and yap. If THRUSH ever got a hold of me, I could tell them things that would make their butts clench. Well, not that I'd ever tell them, of course; I'm just sayin'
Those lab fellas with their tippy-top secret thingies, for example, them guys can't keep their mouths shut for nothin'. They get around a table and it's like chickens circlin' a mess of corn. Cluck, cluck, cluck, we can do this and that and the next thing you know, they're spillin' their guts.”

04:25 pm Harry Potter and the Freak Parade by The-Caitiff (T)
Hello! I will be your reccer for Harry Potter this month. As I did last time I recced for this fandom, I'm going to try and provide recs that fall into all sorts of categories, from gen to het to slash to moresomes.

Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Harry/Luna, James/Lily
Length: 23,220
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: The Caitiff's FFN Profile
Why this must be read: Who doesn't love a funny, cracktastic fic? The-Caitiff starts with the fairly formulaic plot of many post-OOTP independent!Harry fics: friendly and helpful goblins, a Harry that isn't going to take it anymore, an Order of the Phoenix that isn't really that bright, a plotting Dumbledore and a series of fortuitous events. Throw in some romance, a new mysterious 'Purple Lady' and time travel and you have this fantastic fic. Reading this always puts me in a better mood.

04:50 pm Humanity Service by the_ninth_bow (PG-13)
Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Length: ~16,500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] the_ninth_bow
Author Website: Fic Master List
Why this must be read: I adore AUs in which the author explores angel lore in different ways to the show. In ‘Humanity Service’ the_ninth_bow does exactly that: in order to become a warrior of God, Castiel must first fulfil the service component of his training by finding a way in which to help humans. Add one part red-tape, a dash of culture shock, and a super-sized dose of Dean Winchester, and you have the perfect romantic meet-cute confection.

08:02 pm And Some of It Was True by bluerosefairy & carla_scribbles (NC-17)

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gene Hunt/Annie Cartwright
Length: 9,990
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bluerosefairy  and [livejournal.com profile] carla_scribbles
Author Website: lifein1973 memories
Why this must be read:

Gene/Annie is a relatively rare pairing, but this fic will go a long way to convincing even our most ardent slash fans. Not only is it scorchingly hot, it has wonderful Annie characterization, while balancing perfectly Gene's gruffness and grudging affection. It acknowledges the many obstacles between them, and there is some delightful snark and sharp dialogue.

God, he's a fucking bastard, and what she should be doing is slamming the car door in his face and heading up to her apartment. She shouldn't even still be considering this - not with the Guv, of all people - should be making a crack about drinking one too many martinis and planning how best to avoid him tomorrow.

08:39 pm Life or its reverse by theonlytwin (R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: Dan/Laurie/Rorschach
Length: ~7k total
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] theonlytwin
Author's website: /tag/fic
Why this must be read:

This fic's vivid, gorgeous, and hopeful; it's a love story and also a bit of an adventure, told engagingly out-of-order and evoking a great range of emotions in its course.

The story begins with an alternate ending for the novel where Rorschach survives, and has to live in hiding with Dan and Laurie. All three characters are shown to be deeply flawed, not just Rorschach. One line calls them "a couple of intense, neurotic, repressed, violent, affection-starved individuals, and Rorschach."

Since Watchmen was all about how the heroic can be contemptible, a favourite aim of Watchmen fanfic is to cherish or redeem the contemptible. That is what goes on in this fic: the characters are defeated fugitives leading squalid, makeshift lives, psychologically screwy as discussed above, and they tend to get on each other's nerves. But they're the heroes, and it's their love story.

10:58 pm The Meeting With The Goddess by Azephirin (M)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairings: Han/Leia, Luke/Leia, Lando/Mon Mothma
Length: ~600 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] azephirin
Author's Website: AO3 Ficlist
Why this must be read:

Because this story's steamy, that's why and along the way it draws fine character portraits in few words. This prolific author crafts a three-part story with intertwining themes, the section headings taken from Campbell's Hero With A Thousand Faces. It's a sublime mixture of PWP and scholarliness.
