Fandom: VORKOSIVERSE Characters: Miles, Piotr Length: 2600 words Author on LJ: glishara, glisharaAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read:This story takes place when Miles was a child, after his grandfather Piotr has become reconciled to Miles. When Count Piotr holds a meeting with some of his fellow counts to sway their votes on an upcoming bill, Miles slips in with the wine cart to listen in. This is Piotr at his best: canny, political, using his brain instead of his prejudices. In this story Miles and Piotr are perfectly written, and we can see why Miles loved him even if he is not perfectly comfortable around him. And also where Miles learned a lot of his tricks of persuasion. ( snippet ) The Wine Cart

Fandom: WHITE COLLAR Pairing: Elizabeth/Neal/Peter Length: ~ 1200 words Author on LJ: oper_1895Why this must be read:PerspectiveSummary/snippet: “I’ll never complain about a 2 mile radius again, Peter, if you could just get these chains off.” “Do you think you can pick them before someone gets here with the keys?” “Can’t,” Neal said, taking a deep controlling breath. “They‘re welded on.”I have a soft spot for both reunion and hurt/comfort fic and this hits both of those. While the fic starts with the rescue, the author leaves enough hints to give a clear picture of what happened to Neal during his time in captivity. It's beautifully understated hurt/comfort and works perfectly.

Fandom: STAR TREK:REBOOT Characters/Pairings: Spock; Kirk; Uhura; Amanda; Winona; McCoy; Sybok; T'Pring Length: ~150,000 Author on LJ: leupagus Author Website: at AO3
Why this must be read: Detective Spock, born on Vulcan and resident of San Francisco, is assigned to the Midwest police bureau. I think everyone can guess what happens next. Read this now. It is amazing, and the only reason I haven't recommended it before was I was sure someone else must already have.
The story begins with Spock arresting Kirk in Iowa, and ends after the events in the movie, but so much happens in-between. This story escapes easy definition. It is a character piece. A love story. A murder mystery. A political conspiracy. A grand space epic. A comedy. A tragedy. A must read. It is a story about Spock, but all of the other characters are so richly detailed, you wish for another 100,000 words each on any of the rest of the characters.

Fandom: WATCHMENCharacters: Dan/Laurie/Rorschach, Hollis, Adrian, Sally, Moloch, Mothman Length: ~45.5k Author on LJ: mustinvestigateAuthor's website: fic listWhy this must be read:This is one of the fandom's masterpieces. It's an AU set in the world of William Gibson's Neuromancer, where Dan and Rorschach are hackers and Laurie is a razor girl. It's MASSIVE, and extremely complex, and so well written that every one of its bazillion little pieces shines. This story is so good because it not only has all the usual things you want in fanfic - inventive but plausible extrapolations of the characters, new interaction, new adventures, humour, weird transhumanist techno-sex - but it also really strives to live up to its source material, and it succeeds. It has the same crazy abundance of detail as Neuromancer, the same kaleidoscopic sense of multiple overlapping realities, and just the right kind of dystopian griminess. Laurie Isham was waiting when he finished, slipping the virtual reality helmet from his head with fingers that felt thick as firehoses. She stubbed out her contraband cigarette half-smoked and helped him to his feet.
“You got em?” she asked, pointedly ignoring Kovacs as he bundled the equipment away into the hidden safe under the stairs.
“We got em,” Dreiberg replied, unable to keep the smug satisfaction out of his voice. He’d single-handedly destroyed a massive 64k of child pornography before it hit the streets, shooting the police department enough data to compare the models to their missing-child registers and arrest the perpetuators. Should they be so inclined and able, within their complex web of bribes and favors owed. Dreiberg had been careful to bounce the data through three laundering hubs, just in case. Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: James/Lily/Remus/Sirius, James/Lily, Sirius/Remus Length: 2800 Author on LJ: seatbeltdriveinAuthor Website: MasterlistWhy this must be read: This is hot. It starts when Lily asks James a question at breakfast with Remus and Sirius. From there, it is equal parts funny, sexy, hot, with just enough awkwardness to make the scenario realistic. This is a straight up PWP with some lovely kinks. (The author lists them in her header.) A Reversal of Expectations

Well this is my last Crack van post for the month of March. It's been fun and I love the stories I have rec'd, I hope you all do. Fandom:STARSKY AND HUTCH Pairing:Starsky/HutchLength:long Author on LJ:unknownAuthor Website:http://www.starskyhutcharchive.net/viewuser.php?uid=138Why this must be read: I loved this story, but it's a sad little story. I'm just glad that Starsky was there for Hutch. Tam k describes her story this way: A dark secret from Hutch's past comes back to haunt him, forcing him to leave Starsky and his job. Starsky is left in turmoil, wondering where things went wrong and how he can fix them before Hutch walks out of his life forever. "Hello, Kenneth," the man greeted in a calm, even voice. As Starsky slid into the driver's seat, Hutch paused and looked closer at the man speaking to him, his brow furrowing in bewilderment. "Do I know you?" Hutch asked warily. Uneasiness nagged at him as he stared into the man's lackluster blue eyes. The man smiled, not saying a word, eyes ablaze with anger before turning away and disappearing into the crowd. Hutch was tempted to follow him, but Starsky's voice thwarted his intent. "Hutch, ya comin'?" Starsky called through the side window, hand tapping restlessly on the steering wheel. Hutch climbed into the passenger seat, still baffled by the confrontation. "Did you see that guy who was talking to me?" He gestured a thumb in the direction where the man had disappeared. "No, I didn't get a look at him. Who was he?" Starsky replied with an inquisitive arch of his eyebrows. "I-I don't know," Hutch admitted, his gaze still scouring the crowd where the man had disappeared. "He looked familiar, but I can't place his face. He made me really uncomfortable, though." Fandom: HARRY POTTER Pairing: Gen Length: 20,600 Author on LJ: clutzycricketAuthor Website: N/A Why this must be read: Written for the 2009 Big Bang Blackout Challenge, this is a lovely au of Prisoner of Azkaban. clutzycricket makes two changes: (1) Sirius gets a wand; (2) he snoops around a Muggle paranormal reporter who ends up helping him. This is really a story about Sirius and his journey to Hogwarts to find Peter and clear his name. The original character, Jenna, is nicely three dimensional and helps to calm Sirius down when he gets too excited and blinded by his own goals. Of course, he has to get her to the point where she trusts him and that is a fun journey as well. ( snippet )Never Hurt Nobody

Wow. Is it just me, or did that month go by really, really fast? We're done though -- I double checked and everything, and all recs are present and accounted for. It's been a pleasure revisting all these favourites while putting this set together, and I hope you've had fun following the Dean/Castiel ship with me. Until next time, amigos! *twirls cape and disappears back to delicious* Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Dean/Castiel Length: 10k Author on LJ: bree_blackAuthor Website: Fic MasterlistWhy this must be read: No Dean/Castiel rec set would be complete without a story featuring angelic dream-stalking. Right? Right. So here we have Dean in a coma, and Castiel dropping by to find out why he won't wake up. Frankly, given what bree_black has Dean dreaming about, I'm with Dean all the way on the sleeping-a-bit-longer front. :) Of Storms & Sanctuary

Fandom: WATCHMENCharacters: Dan/Laurie/Rorschach Length: ~6.6k Author on LJ: brancherAuthor's website: brancherWhy this must be read:In this fic's universe, Laurie left Jon before the Keene Act was passed, and hooked up with Dan. Rorschach disapproves, of course, but he's bound by loyalty to Dan to watch her back. So when she's injured on patrol with only Rorschach around, he has to help her, and that's where the story starts. I loved this one first for its understated narration of the hurt/comfort scenario, and then for its attention to the characters' various weird issues: their violence, their kinks, their immaturity and irresponsibility. The story's all about the romance of screwed up people rescuing each other. TriageIf you like it, you have to also check out its WIP sequel Teshuva, which has got a huge range of moods from wistful to ridiculous, and plenty more screwed up romance too.
