She gives us third-year Minerva's first-person voice, although it soon becomes clear it's a retrospective narrative, a smart, perceptive student's outlook leavened by the clarity of the backward glance. Young Minerva's put in charge of two late-enrolled Squibs sent by their worried parents to Hogwarts in the hope they'll be safe from the terrible war shaking the Muggle world. One is a tall girl whose whole soul is expressed through flight, and who tapes photos of world-famous aviatrices to her dorm wall. She is magickless but indomitable, and she's a major reason why you should check out this fic: because Rolanda Hooch is a walking rebuttal to all the stereotypes of Muggle inferiority, a brusque and forthright girl with the heart of a lion. Maggie's Hooch is the portrait of the hero as a young dyke, finely tuned to the period and full of flair. She's an original, and so is the writer capable of imagining her this way. Written for the bandom big bang and a 'take your fandom to work' Akire gives us a glimpse on the other side of the academic world that as a student you barely glimpse. The deadlines, getting students butts in gear and the laugh out loud emails from the administration staff are the tip of the iceburg for this wonderful gem of a fic. Indeed, partly because it came originally in a very plain-looking zine, it was the default choice for me to take with me on airplane trips. I could munch on airline snacks (those were the days) and lose myself in this AU/SF-world, romantic story. It was also one of the first stories I put on my e-reader. I love the civilians who TOTALLY KNOW that the Rangers are the Rangers, but have to keep their secret. The Rangers have never been good at this whole secret identity thing, and Rev's Kelly is absolutely fabulous, and there's a great connection to earlier seasons. There are so many things the characters just don't talk about. This is Dean and Cas coming together, comforting one another, but not really acknowledging that's what it's about. There are hints of humor, passion, compassion, but they're subtle, as if the story and the characters are weighed down by their lives. It aptly captures the feeling of the show's later seasons. Yes, he could be annoying, but as much as I love Cas, sometimes it was nice to have an angel around who wasn't like all the others. And Gabriel could bring the snark with the best of them. In some ways, he and Sam are an odd fit, but in other ways, they're perfect for each other because you know Gabriel can take whatever Sam can dish out, and he'll give back just as good. After all, he thought nothing of killing Dean a hundred times to prove a point ... for Sam's own good. This fic has drugged!Sam and Gabriel to the rescue ... sort of. The author's captured both Gabriel's sheer delight at the situation and Sam's inability to filter what he's saying. The story's by turns funny, sweet, and ultimately, scorching hot.
