Pairing:  Doctors 1-10/ Random Female Historical Figures
Length:5358
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook
Author Website: AO3

Why this must be read:

Lost_Spook has written a hilarious account of the Doctor's issues with commitment. It's not that he can't settle down. It's the proposals to random historical female figures that get him every time.

In the words of the Author:
"You wouldn't believe how difficult it is for a passing Time Lord not to get married to famous historical women completely by accident. Seriously. Happens all the time."

06:17 am The Virtues Series by Nyteflyer (rating: R and NC-17)
Fandom: DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERIES
Pairing: Donald Strachey/Timothy Callahan
Length: Series of 7 stories, about 50K altogether
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nyteflyer
Author Website: All Nyte's stories are listed here

Why this must be read: The fandom's movie universe doesn't give us much insight into how Donald and Timothy met, so fic writers have taken it upon themselves to give the guys some backstory. [livejournal.com profile] nyteflyer accepted the challenge and cleverly took her themes from the seven virtues — hope, fortitude, charity, prudence, temperance, justice and faith.

These stories are all told from Don's first-person point of view. We get a good look inside Donald's head, and we learn why he trusts no one, even a man like Timothy Callahan. As the stories progress, Donald learns to accept what Timothy has to offer and comes to realize his own self-worth and the value of true and lasting love.

03:56 pm Should I Fall Behind by Verlaine (not rated, probably PG)
Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Length: 1390 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loyseofverlaine
Author Website: More of Verlaine's wonderful fic can be found at Kassidy Rae's Starsky & Hutch slash fansite. http://shslash.kassidyrae.com/fiction.html
Why this must be read: I have a split fannish personality. I adore happy endings, sweet romance, lovey-dovey fluff...but I also devour all the angst-wracked, teeth-grinding, can't-live-without-you-so-I'm-gonna-eat-my-gun darkfic I can find. Don't worry, this fic isn't that dark -- quite. We're post-SR, and Starsky isn't doing nearly as well as the ending of that ep led us to believe. And that means Hutch isn't doing well. At all. Nothing is resolved here; the ending is left open, so there's room for hope. Or there's room for despair, if you prefer. Either way, this fic is not to be missed.

07:15 pm Chasing Smoke, by Hazelwho (R)
*skids in really, really late*

Hi! I was supposed to rec for due South back in May, but I was having a lot of problems getting the crack van started up and it needed repairs, and I was busy and...well, you know how it goes.

My theme for May was remixes, and I'll get back to that soon enough, but first I'm going to rec some recent stories...specificially from this year's C6D/due South Big Bang. Check out the art for these wonderful stories, too.

Fandom: due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Length: longish
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hazelwho
Author Website: at AO3
Why this must be read: Firefighter AU. Do I really need to say more? The story is engaging and fascinating, the characterizations are sharp and pitch perfect and the bits of canon are woven nicely throughout the story.

A taste... )

07:32 pm It's Not About Pasta by Nemo the Everbeing (NC-17)
Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES (BBC)
Pairing: Sherlock Holmes/G. Lestrade
Length: 5145 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nemo_everbeing
Author Website: Nemo on FF.net
Why this must be read::

There have been a million fics written with Sherlock and Lestrade and plenty more explicit than this one, but something about this story really sums them up (both in terms of fanon and canon), plus how John fits into the whole relationship. It's sweet and funny, with some very nice sexy bits :D

08:03 pm The Wrong End of the Stick by Elizabeth O'Shea (PG)
Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: 2744 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] elizabethoshea
Author Website: Elizabeth O'Shea on AO3
Why this must be read: Well first, in the interest of full disclosure, this story was written for me. Ahem. But lots of other people agree with me that it's terrific! *g* Elizabeth O'Shea is a wonderful writer. I just wish she had the time to write more in this fandom. In this story, Bodie and Doyle visit a pub after an op in Brighton that has left Doyle with stitches and a black eye. When people in the pub show an interest in Doyle's appearance, Bodie sees a glorious opportunity to embarrass Doyle and entertain himself. The resulting scene is funny, astutely in-character, and layered with emotion.

10:43 pm Keeps Raining All the Time by eponymous_rose (PG-13)
Fandom: MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: none
Length: 4645 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose
Author Website: eponymous_rose at AO3
Why this must be read:

Disclaimer: This was written for me, etc.--never mind that; Keeps Raining All the Time is a beautifully written tense, angsty, engrossing story that examines faith and trust and friendship--and what they can possibly mean in the netherworld of spies and their games of betrayal.

Illya goes undercover, a supposed turncoat now working for Thrush--his only contact with UNCLE his regular meetings with Napoleon. We see through Napoleon's eyes: the meetings Illya keeps, the meetings he misses, the tension rising as the stakes rise. As the unanswered questions mount, even Mr. Waverly's faith in his agent seems to waver, until all Napoleon has left is his own need to trust his partner, a trust we begin to fear that Illya may already have betrayed... Wonderful pacing, almost unbearable tension--this story will keep you guessing until the end.

"Illya?" Napoleon's right hand was clenching the phone too tightly, and his left was already fumbling across the table for a piece of paper, a pen, but of course it found nothing; written records left traces, and traces could be followed. He stilled his fingers' nervous explorations. "What happened? Why haven't you been-"

"I don't have time to explain. The warehouse. Twenty-five minutes. Come alone."

There was a click, and the line went dead.

11:38 pm Nocturne by Purpleshrub (G)

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1
Pairing: none
Length: 2,509 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] purpleshrub
Author Website:
StargateFan
Why this must be read:
Purpleshrub is one of those lovely surprises in Stargate fandom. An older writer in the fandom, her pieces still bring enjoyment to us later fans years after they've been written. Out of her four stories, Nocturne is a particular favorite of mine as it incorporates the friendship of two very different men, Daniel and Teal'c, and their growing relationship through the sharing of music. Purpleshrub takes us through Seasons 1-7 in three different instances, using music to illustrate how Teal'c and Daniel see each other and how they interact. Daniel teaches the piano to Teal'c, who then takes it into and makes it a part of himself, using it to remember his friend. That simple idea just grows into one of the most gentle and beautiful examinations of friendship I've read in SG1 fandom.
