03:04 am The Patron Saint of Spies Affair by Gina Martin (K = Suitable for most ages)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: None
Length: approx 4,400 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: Solo Sojourn
Why this must be read: A mission in a picturesque English locale brings to Napoleon's mind images of "Alice in Wonderland". Yet there is nothing truly bucolic here, though indeed perhaps a bit mad, as the guys deal with a nervous informant and the determination of the fingered smuggler to stay out of U.N.C.L.E.'s hands.

The author paints a wonderfully detailed picture, from the seemingly peaceful environmental setting to the particulars of the disguises of the agents, from the jumpy informant to the Bob-Hope-visaged smuggler, from Napoleon's physical struggles with the smuggler's thugs and then the injured agent's pursuit by the smuggler himself to Illya's difficult choice between success of the mission and possibly his friend's life. It's surely at times like this that even the most jaded spy might wish for a little otherworldly help...

Why this must be read: - This is one of the 'The men in black are out to get Jim, but they've had some warning' stories.

I love the way they have everything planned; a code word to indicate that there's danger, the paperwork that has new identities for them already set, an escape route organised. All they have to do is move...

It's open-ended so there's a place here for a sequel, but - much as I would like one - it isn't absolutely necessary. The story does everything it sets out to do.

Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Length: 17,500

Warnings: Terminal illness: HIV/AIDS, past minor character death, non-explicit alcohol and drug use
Why this must be read:

Another modern AU in which Merlin is three years into living with HIV, and he is handling it, but only just, and not well. Then he meets Arthur, who has never known how to take a rejection and won't let Merlin ruin his life through his own fears for the future. This fic is a sad one imo, and while it has a happy ending, it can best be described as bittersweet. I like the look of them here, Arthur is as pushy as ever but so caring, and Merlin is a brilliant prickly beautiful mess of a man. It's possible if you don't like bossy, take-charge Arthur that you won't like this incarnation - because he really doesn't take no for an answer, perhaps more than he should, but this Merlin needs it, so I think it's ok. The writing is gorgeous, as always with [livejournal.com profile] hermette, please give it a go, especially if you like angst, as I very much do :)

10:40 pm A Change in Approach by CollyWobbleKiwi (PG-13)
Fandom: Petshop of Horrors
Characters: Leon, D
Length: ~900 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] collywobblekiwi
Author Website: Author's fic on AO3.
Why this must be read: I love a lot of Rule 63 fic. One of the most interesting things about it, IMO, is when we see female characters carrying out the same jobs as their male canon counterparts, but being expected to perform femininity at the same time. The ways in which that colours their actions and leads them to consider things from a slightly different point of view can be really interesting, and that's just what we get in this ficlet. Leona Orcot is just as brash, crude, and slightly out of her depth as Leon is, and her lack of ease with expectations of femininity is -- of course -- thrown into sharp relief by the immaculate D.

In a lot of PSoH fic (and, to be fair, in canon) it can be easy to forget that Leon's a detective because he's so bamboozled all the time, so the fact that this fic shows Leona thinking about different approaches and how to get the information she needs out of a witness is also a nice change.

If you enjoy it, you'll probably want to check out the fluffy and femmeslashy sequel, too.
