08:50 am The 3:28 Affair by crashtestskater (NC-17)
Fandom: THE MAN FROM UNCLE
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Length: 1100 words or so
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] crashtestskater
Author Website: none that I am aware of
Why this must be read: It's porn. Really well-written porn. Short and to the point porn. That's still kind of sweet. It's also extremely sexy and a smidgen slutty. Basically the plot is that Napoleon can't sleep and Illya is too tempting to resist. There. That's pretty much all you need to know, so go read it now. Trust me, you'll adore it.

09:34 am Proper Procedure series, by paxlux (PG-13)

Hi, I'm your reccer for Sherlock BBC fandom for October. Sorry for the late start. I'll try to find some less familiar stories for you to enjoy, as well as some of our instant "classics."

Fandom: SHERLOCK (BBC)
Title: Proper Procedure series
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 2600-3500 words
Author: paxlux ([livejournal.com profile] bashfulbetty for fic)
Author Website: paxlux on AO3
Why this must be read:

221-B Baker Street and the relationship of its inhabitants have been described by a number of authors as a crime scene. John Watson studies Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock studies John, and we're the beneficiaries of their observations. The two stories in paxlux's "Proper Procedures" series (and I had a hard time deciding which one I preferred) link crime scenes and methods with John's contemplation of Sherlock and their evolving involvement. The language and imagery follow the theme--water and drowning for "Death by Drowning," and a stifling, Gothic atmosphere for "Asphyxiation." Sherlock plays his violin in "Drowning," for fans of that canonical trope. In "Asphyxiation," there's mist curling through a graveyard, Sherlock looks Byronic, and John thinks he should be wearing a nightdress.
The stories are worth reading for their mood alone, but John's frame of mind, the solving of a mystery, and the bittersweet uncertainty of the relationship are just as satisfying.

Fandom: X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (Marvel movieverse fusion with Marvel comicsverse, AU)
Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Length: 29,702 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] waldorph
Author Website: waldorph on AO3
Why this must be read:
This story is a gritty take on X-men: First Class set in an Alternate Universe (or What if? universe, Marvel-style) modern day. The details of this story are gorgeous and the characterization is amazing. Erik Lehnsherr and Emma Frost (along with several other characters from the movie and from the comics) are part of Division X, the government response team that deals with mutant issues. Erik moves into a new home that is haunted by a "ghost" named Charles and we watch as a huge conspiracy unfolds from there. The plot of this story is amazing and the characters are recognizable from both the movie and the comics, but still somehow work in this AU. You seriously need to read this story.

12:45 pm Marcella, Unstarched, by arcsupport (PG-13)

Fandom: SHERLOCK BBC
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 2183
Author: [livejournal.com profile] arcsupport
Author Website: none
Why this must be read:

Arm porn! Delicious, delightful, detailed, distracting, delineated contemplation of Sherlock's arms, as John Watson tries valiently to hang wallpaper with Sherlock's help. There's also that purple shirt. (But not quite-- not the poplin off-the-rack Dolce & Gabbana we see Sherlock wear onscreen. In this slightly satorially AU, all of Sherlock's shirts are made to order.) John's tempted to bite. Wouldn't you?

01:13 pm Shadow by ennyousai (PG)
Fandom: FIREFLY / DOLLHOUSE
Pairing: None
Length: Three parts, but can be read in one sitting
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ennyousai
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] ennyousai_fic

Why this must be read: Fics that attempt to bring parts of the Whedonverse together--especially Firefly and Buffy--are far from uncommon.  But I'm pretty sure you haven't seen too many mergers of the Firefly 'verse with that of Dollhouse--especially one that slots familiar crew members into just the right roles and gives Mal and company a whole new level of aimin' to misbehave.  The merged voices are spot-on, and while "Shadow" is an AU within the Firefly 'verse, it's entirely believable that the Dollhouse  tech could have been developed there.

"Inara," says Gheydra with a sigh, "your thoughts on this don't matter. The Company wants its actives completely blank when they're not engaged. For whatever reason, Shadow resists a complete wipe." )

08:30 pm The "Holes in the Rain" Series by hallowd (PG-13)
Fandom: BLEACH
Pairing: Ichigo/Rukia
Length: ~9,900
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hallowd
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] paperiuni
Why this must be read:

This author has such a wonderful grasp of these two characters, and I loved reading both Rukia and Ichigo's point of views. Following them through three distinct points in the series these pieces really capture these two characters and gives both Ichigo and Rukia such emotional depth; their interactions and the way they relate to one other is just pitch perfect, making this series a must read for any fan of this relationship.

08:52 pm Bottom of the Ninth by smallwaldo (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/Tony (pre-slash)
Length: 17,865 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] smallwaldo
Author Website: Waldo's Writings (DW)
Why this must be read: From the author's summary: "Gibbs realizes that if he and Tony are ever going to have a relationship, he's going to have to do something about it.  It takes almost a year, but he gets there eventually." And that's what I love about the story: It's basically an old fashioned courting over a period of time. Gibbs style, of course. *g* It follows early canon pretty closely, featuring many of my favorite episodes, from "Dead Man Talking" to "SWAK" and "Chained." The characterizations are spot on, and I love the way Gibbs woos Tony all manly-like. ;) Baseball as the recurring theme ties in perfectly with the ups and downs of our guys' lives during the courtship...until, of course, Gibbs hits a home run at the bottom of the ninth. ;)
