Why this must be read: River Tam is a difficult character to write, and Laura does her justice here, as River considers what Simon and Mal have each given her and thanks them for it. The voice is clear, concise, and just disjointed-with-underlying-logic enough to ring true.

All she knows is Simon saved her, and Mal saved them both, and some debts have to be paid. )

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Doyle
Length: ~17500 words

Author’s Stories: Automated Hatstand; The Circuit Archive
Why this must be read: evocative writing and spot on characterization

Another of my favorite Pro’s writers is Slantedlight. She knows the lads inside and out. What makes her stories so special is the way she has with words. She doesn’t tell a story, she paints it. This bit makes me feel like I’m right there on the beach with Bodie watching Ray…

excerpt 1 )
Slantedlight’s stories feature a great plot, action, angst, hurt/comfort and throughout it all, we have the lads as the hard men they are. When she writes the scenes that show their love for each other, their vulnerability exposed, she writes it without feminizing them. They stay Bodie and Doyle.

Beautifully described settings, moving scenes of angst and love… please give this one a try!

Why this must be read: So, Timothy McGee writes Deep Six novels, right? Well, there has been enough fic where people write Deep Six fanfiction (most notably, of course, with the team members finding out about it). This story, however, tweaks the idea and makes it even better. Anyone who has ever gone to a Star Trek convention (for example) knows how the fans delight in dressing up as their favorite characters. Now imagine the same thing happening in regard to Deep Six. With Team Gibbs in the middle. And being told they're either too old or not authentic enough to pull off "their characters." This story is hilarious, and I wish we'd see something like this on the show someday! LOL!

Length: ~4k

Why this must be read: This is the story of Steve and Catherine's first meeting and first hook-up, from Cath's POV. I love the characterizations, especially Catherine's, and the dynamic between the two of them. Both of them read very clearly to me here. Also, the sex is hot!

Fandom: MERLIN
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Length: 12,000 words

Author Website: Crazypaving (mpoetess) at AO3
Why this must be read:

I had to have at least one kinky one (OK, there'll probably be more than one) and this one has spanking. Arthur is required to punish Merlin. It's light-hearted, and hits perfectly in character, which is quite hard to achieve in kinkier fic. They're very much them (and Uther is very much Uther) and it's enjoyable in every way.

09:59 pm The Past Keeps on Getting Brighter by inabathrobe (R)
Fandom: WATCHMEN
Pairing: Adrian/various (mostly Dan)
Length: ~3500
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] inabathrobe
Author Website: Author's fic on LJ
Why this must be read: First off, a warning: this fic is about AIDS, and really pulls no punches. There's character death, and it hurts. That said, that's also why you should read it. It's wrenching, and tender without being schmoopy or sentimental, and the simple, straightforward prose style just makes it all the more affecting. Plus, it manages to make the sort of behaviour I'd normally consider totally OOC for Adrian appear perfectly convincing, which is always a sign that the author is Doing It Right.
