Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Brad Colbert/Ray Person
Length: 23521
Author on LJ: [info]queeniegalore
Author Website: Queenie's Fic
Why this must be read:

This is, primarily, a fic about coming home and realising what makes home. It's a fic about realising what love is and being honest about it with yourself. Brad is an incredibly complex character, but this fic really does him justice in all his pride and reluctance and honesty and bravery.

It's one of those fics that just feels like a logical continuation of the mini. The realisations are really painful, beautifully well-written and realistic and essential; the dialogue is perfectly in-character; and the ending scene is both incredibly hot and beautifully sweet.

Fandom:  YU YU HAKUSHO
Pairing:  Yusuke/Hiei/Kurama in any combo you could think of
Length:  57K
Author on LJ:  [livejournal.com profile] mika_starlight
More fic can be found at:  AdultFanFiction.net

Why this is a must read:

I was intrigued by the "what if Yusuke had never gone to Makai" theme.  [livejournal.com profile] mika_starlight does a great job describing Yusuke's "growing pains" as his demon heritage makes itself known.  In the author's own words, "Suppose that Yusuke hadn't gone to Makai after finding out he was a demon. How would he react to his new demonic instincts and powers in a decidedly human world? Who else but Kurama could offer advice on becoming a demon? Perhaps Hiei?  Includes WAFF, chance of OOC, hand job, oral, anal, threesome, DP, solo, rim and a great deal of random smut."

A great, longer read which you don't want to miss out on.

08:39 pm King and Country by tabulaxrasa (Explicit)
Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Frank/Gerard, Mikey/Alicia
Length: 51,390 words + 4,440 words in coda
Author on LJ & DW: [livejournal.com profile] tabula_x_rasa & [personal profile] tabula_x_rasa
Author on AO3: [archiveofourown.org profile] tabulaxrasa

Why this must be read: Today, they'd woken up and Gerard was King of Illyria. Frank hasn't really been a stable boy since he ended up in the archduke's bed, but now Gerard's exile is over and he's king. Frank has to survive court, politics, and scheming nobles to figure out exactly what he is now.

This is a wonderful story. It's warm and happymaking without being saccarine or cutesy in any way. It's an excellent historical AUs with just enough historical detail to anchor it in time and place, but not so much that it gets bogged down by it. The story itself is refreshingly new, starting as it does where the usual historical AU ends. And I love how Frank and Gerard are written as grownups and how right Gerard's awareness of social issues is for the period.

11:07 pm The Philanderer and the Thief by dakfinv (PG-13)

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gen. Major characters are Sam Tyler and Ray Carling
Length: 20,000 words
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] dakfinv
Author Website: Fic index here
Why this must be read:
This is epic, wonderful, Sam and Ray casefic. I wouldn't say that they've *bonded* by the end of it, but after much banter and crime solving, they're more accepting of the fact that they'll never entirely understand one another. Really fantastic look at CID team dynamics and excellent Sam, Ray, and Gene voices.

The Philanderer and the Thief  Link goes to part 11/11--earlier parts are linked from there.

11:34 pm Thus, every feather obeys the wind, by Mergatrude (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 1793 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mergatrude
Author Website: Fic on AO3
Why this must be read:

Because it's a beautiful and poignant take on wingfic. Mergatrude's story is more about nature and transformation than angels, grounded in the worldbuilding that was inspired by a news story about eagles.  It jumps back and forth between the past, with Ray at the beginning of the change, and the present, with Fraser waiting for him to return--and remembering for both of them. One minute, you're reading something that feels like it's part of a nature documentary, and then she absolutely breaks your heart with just a sentence.

11:43 pm Raising Sand by Aidara (PG-13)
Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: gen, Brad Colbert, Ray Person
Length: 3931
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aidara
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] aidara, AO3
Why this must be read:

Yet another excellent Yuletide fic, this time from 2009. It's roadtrip fic - one of those fanfic cliches - but it reflects on their other 'roadtrip' in a set of almost-parallels that really make you think. The questions of friendship and war are looked at from the guys' point of view, and we're left to come to our own conclusions. It feels straight out of the mini.

The characterisation is excellent - you both feel and see the different layers of Brad and Ray - and their voices are spot on. They're guys who've just come out of a really shitty situation and are trying to come to terms with it, themselves, and each other. At the same time, they're capable Recon Marine BAMFs who don't know when - or how - to give up; and they have a mission to get squared away.
