12:50 am All Those People That You Know by nightanddaze (NC-17)
Fandom: GENERATION KILL
Pairing: Nate Fick/Brad Colbert, ensemble
Length: 5452
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nightanddaze
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] nightanddaze
Why this must be read:

This is another dark fic - this time, playing with the concepts of humanity as viewed from a different angle. It really makes you think about humanity - what shapes and defines it, and what we are, on a base level.

Again, I can't say much without giving away the plot; but what I can say is that Nate is not what he seems, and he's in Iraq for reasons that are not those that he tells the men. This is a chilling and haunting story; it's not horror per se, but it is creepy and sometimes a little disturbing. The characterisation is fantastically subtle, and the pacing is stellar.

06:54 am Silent Fears by Jayfray18 (PG)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/Tony
Length: about 1,350 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jayfray18
Author Website: Masterlist on LJ
Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Gibbs takes care of Tony, trying not to let his fears get the better of him.

Another feel good fic like my previous rec, this story will just make you smile and melt at the tender loving and the comfort after some sick-y hurt. We all know the focused and determined Gibbs at work, ready to drop everything and turn his laser sights on the mission and nothing but. Now that the case is done, he turns that focus and those laser sights on a sick Tony that needs his care and help.

Enter Jayfray18 with this tender expression of utter love. The whole story details Gibbs lovingly washing his man after a hard case in which Tony has developed a lung infection and then taking him to bed for cuddles. I know I can't be the only one with the phrase "D'wwwwaaaaahhhhh" going through my head after reading this. And after some of the heavy emotional recs I've thrown out since the middle of the month, this feel-good-er is just perfect for a bit of relief. :)

11:56 am Worth Living For, by Sahiya (g)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: River Song/Ninth Doctor, River Song/Eleventh Doctor
Length: 5k
Author on LJ: Sahiya
Author Website: AO3 link

Why this must be read: She didn't need to check the Book of Faces to know which Doctor this was. Short hair, sharp features, long, lanky body - this was number nine, whom her Doctor had told her she would never meet. This was the Doctor fresh from the Time War. Because of the timey-whimy nature of River's relationship with the Doctor, there is this possibility of her having met other versions of the Doctor aside from Ten and Eleven. This is one of my favorite fics that explores that avenue, while perfectly fitting into canon. Here, River meets the Doctor moments after he's regenerated into Nine, and it's such a broken, guilt-ridden and angry Doctor that greets her. I just love the hurt/comfort aspect of this, and how Nine is so distrustful of River but at the same time recognizes her importance in some unknown way. It's gorgeously written.

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: Donna Noble/The Doctor
Length: 1k
Author Website: A03 account

Why this must be read: Donna and the Doctor discover something... unpleasant about the psychic paper. Read this so that you can die of laughter. It is side-splitting hilarity, true to their characters.

04:12 pm Educating Harry Potter by hgfan1111 (M)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Mostly gen with a little Harry/Ginny
Author on LJ: Couldn't find one
Author's Website: FFN
Why this must be read: This is a real gem. hgfan poses the question, "who exactly gave Harry Potter the talk about sex?" and answers it in ten different one-shots, brought together by their common theme. My favourite by far was the lesson from Snape but all of them are funny and even touchin (no pun intended).

07:50 pm Getting Better (PG13) by Nox_Candida
Fandom: SHERLOCK
Pairing: Sherlock/John, Sherlock's Kid, John's Kid
Length: 21 chapters
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nox_candida
Author Website: [livejournal.com profile] multiplegrooves
Why this must be read:

I need to clear up two things right away. First, I am a huge sucker for kidfic. Second, I am extremely skeptical of kidfic in this particular fandom. That said, this one is fabulous. It is completely AU and told entirely from the perspective of young Tristram Holmes, very much Sherlock's son. It paints a very believable picture of Sherlock Holmes as a single parent, with occasional unwelcome intrusion from Mycroft. At school Tristram meets Emily Watson and they become friends. The usual kidficcy sort of thing. But there is also a mystery wound through the story and some nail biting tension that had me shouting out loud at the characters. The narration is at times rather frustrating (in a good way) because you want desperately to know what is going on but Tristram doesn't fully understand the world of the adults who surround him, so you can't either. It's a nice long satisfying read.

08:11 pm Favors, Delusions, and Libel by margo_kim (PG)
Fandom: LIFE ON MARS
Pairing: Gen. Major characters Sam and Gene
Length: 1,364
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] margo_kim
Author Website: Here
Why this must be read:
Sam explains to Gene that he needs a place to stay for a while because his bed's trying to eat him. Literally. Gene has thoughts about his DI's sanity. And his need for someone to do the dishes at his house. margo_kim's dialogue is fantastic and her characterizations of both of them--and the situation--makes it seem like she has access to a vial of Essence of Sam and Gene.

An excerpt:

Sam scooped up the files and turned to leave. “By the way,” he said over his shoulder, “you know Jackie Queen implied you were lazy, corrupt, and fat on page seven?”

“Fat?”

“She used ‘portly.’ Don’t worry, though, it looks good on you.” Sam kicked open the office door. “We’ll drive home ‘round seven, yeah?” And he swanned out, more swagger in his step than a man carrying four hours of paperwork should have. It was probably easy to strut about when you weren’t encumbered by things like sanity.
