Fandom: INCEPTION Title: Deja Fucking Deja VuPairing: Nash/Arthur Length: 5,887 Author on LJ: weatherfrontAuthor Website: author's fic journalWhy this must be read: Weatherfront's Inception fics speak for themselves. It's impossible to pick a single fic of hers to rec this month, so I'm not going to try. But if held at gunpoint, I'd have to go with this one, because in choosing to write about Nash--the sniveling, quickly-disposed-of architect from the beginning of the film--Weatherfront goes where few other members of the fandom have dared or cared, and shows us what it means to truly transform a minor character into a major revelation. What makes "Deja Fucking Deja Vu" remarkable is not just that it's a devastating story thrillingly & unforgettably told, not just that it manages to make us empathize deeply with the unlikely/unlikable Nash, but that it shows us Arthur in one of the few critical perspectives we're offered in the film. And Arthur shines all the more, all the more heartbreakingly, amid Nash's cynicism and wry realism. It's a paradox that's as enthralling as it is heartclenching, and makes Nash's voice come alive with all the engaging 3-dimensionality he was denied in the film. I suspect the reason more fans don't write about Nash is because this fic is a hard standard to match. But it's a brilliant standard, an amazing fic, and a perfect example of all the untold stories of Inception canon that are still waiting to be mined. ( That's how you end up sitting across the pavilion from a pair of dicks in suits called Cobb and Arthur. )Deja Fucking Deja Vu

Title: Satan Take The Wheel / Fall Like Lightning Down From HeavenFandom: Inception Pairing: Arthur/Eames Length: 25,382 Author: Blue Fish Author Website: author's works on AO3Why this must be read: One of the things Inception fandom frequently does is explore the effects of forging on Eames' personality--the psychology of having to literally become someone else, and the aftermath of having to hold a forge for a long time. This fic is a fill for the kink meme prompt, "Eames forges Satan." It's a complex look at Eames having trouble slipping out of a forge that takes over him completely, and even more than that, it's 25,000 fucking words of Arthur and Eames slipping inadvertently into a negotiated d/s relationship and discovering so much more about themselves in the process than either one of them ever imagined. It's hot and thorough and believable and in-character and knowledgeable and there's even a violet wand, and tons of Milton quoting that doesn't even seem out-of-place or cheesy given the subject matter. The fic is divided into two parts from their different POVs--the first part deals more with the accidental roleplay as a result of Eames being unable to shake the forge, and the second part is a more self-aware experimentation; both parts are in-character and mesmerising. ( God wouldn't be able to lead him into temptation. )Satan Take The Wheel / Fall Like Lightning Down From Heaven

Fandom: THE AVENGERS (MOVIE!VERSE) Pairing: Natasha (Fem!Tony) Stark/Steve Rogers, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov, Natasha Stark (Fem!Tony)/Everyone Length: 4k Author on LJ: pprfaithAuthor Website: AO3Why this must be read: When I first came across this fic, I was skeptical, only giving it a chance because it had the pairing of Hawkeye and the Black Widow tagged. That pairing is mentioned with less then twenty words but I found that didn't care. Why? Because, pprfaith makes the already amazing character of Tony Stark more kickass and more sympathetic for readers to read and all as a female if I might add. This story is not a self-insert disguised as a female character but a true blue character study of a canon character. Sure, the character is missing some vital physical aspects but the personality, at its core, is there with a slight twist of situations that are marred with the tribulations of being a female. red, red, gold

Fandom: DUE SOUTH (with Wristcutters: A Love Story) Pairing: Renfield Turnbull/Ray Vecchio Length: 2500 words Author on LJ: exbexAuthor Website: On Ao3Why this must be read: Besides masterfully showing us an unfortunately underrated pairing, exbex takes the canon of Wristcutters and shows the reader a portrait of the afterlife that's different from anything you've seen before. Ray Vecchio and Renfield Turnbull meet after their seperate -- but not dissimilar or entirely unlinked -- ends and even in a world where it seems all of the afterlife has been reduced to shades of gray and in a pale imitation of living, somewhere in all that, they manage to find a tiny spark. A must-read for anyone who loves a good story where the underdogs get their chance. Dead Guys Don't Always Finish Last by exbex

Fandom: NCIS Pairing: none / gen (author says she considers it Gibbs/Tony but it can be absolutely read as gen/friendship so that's what I labelled it) Length: about 1,200 words Author on LJ: thefannishwaldoAuthor website/archives: waldos_writings (on Dreamwidth) Why this must be read: I love Waldo's stories. This story has to be my favorite though, for the simple fact that is portrays Tony the way I see him: strong, loyal to a fault, with a huge sense of justice. He's unapologetic and stubborn when it comes to protecting Gibbs -- even and especially when Gibbs has no clue about it. (Punch Line)

Fandom: COMMUNITY Pairing: Ensemble Length: 2729 words Author's Website: At AO3Why this must be read: For the last several years, Yuletide has produced some amazing Community fanfiction. This story finds Abed writing fanfiction about the group (I know!), and hilariously plays around with different genres in the process. What makes me really adore this story, however, is the way that, in the end, all the meta-humor culminates in a sweet and real scene of friendship between Shirley and Abed. Creative (Non)Fiction
