Why this must be read:

Author's Summary: Being friends is always going to be complicated for them.

There's a lot of nice tension in this fic. A incredible illustration of just how close to the surface Monroe's blutbad instincts really are. He may hold them in check with his regime of Pilates, cello playing, and vegetarianism. However, when faced with constant battles side-by-side with his baby Grimm and with overwhelming desire for that very same Grimm, the wild side comes out to play.

This fic plays around with the whole instinctual side of Monroe to perfection. We get the growls, the herding of Nick against a hard surface, grabbing of Nick's throat in the submissive position, the possessiveness, and so much UST, it's insane. There's a bit of a cool down with some chilling on the couch over coffee afterwards. But that tension is still there, in the background. And yet, for all that tension, you can still feel the utter trust Nick has for his Blutbad. That is a lovely illustration of the trust between these guys in canon, as well. So I swear you'll feel every bit of this fic and just wish like crazy there was more.

Fandom: Sherlock
Pairing: Sherlock/John
Length: 16,906 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thesardine
Author Website: Stories on AO3
Why this must be read: After John falls overboard during a storm, Sherlock jumps into the ocean after him. They find themselves stranded on a small island where John busies himself trying to keep them alive by building shelters and carving fishing hooks while Sherlock's sanity begins to deteriorate without the stimulation of city life and his all important cases. The writing is viceral and uncompromising; there aren't pat resolutions to what the men are going through both physically and mentally. This is one of those fabulous stories that doesn't let up until the very end where there's as happy of an ending as we could hope for in the circumstances.

Why this must be read:

Because it is full of adorable team-building! And mentions Isaiah and Eli Bradley!

Ahem.

Steve's adjustment to the 21st century is fertile ground for fic-writers, and this is a sweet, funny example of the genre.

Fandom: KUROSHITSUJI
Pairing: none

Length: double drabble

Author Website: khilari on AO3
Why this must be read:
Finny wins a turkey chick to raise for the Christmas table -- and really, truly intends to do exactly that.

One of the coolest things about fanfic's ultra-short forms is the way that in the right hands, they can be amazingly bigger on the inside than on the outside. This is a story that manages the trick in high form.

Read it, and then go have a look at Toboso's cover for Chapter 63. (Readers following the manga will already be familiar with it, but it's always fun to see it again.)
