Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN Pairing: surprise Length: circa 10K and graphic heavy Authors on LJ: zeuses_wild and freesnowconeAuthors website: n/a Why this must be read: Oh, so so many reasons! Because it's clever and original, very funny and seriously cute. I'm not exactly sure what category the rec goes into apart from genius - it's not strictly a crossover, or an art rec, or a fic rec... perhaps it's a fusion? Anyhow, it's definitely an AU and a priceless one at that, a "story" in eleven installments that partly writes itself as the Sims 3 game plays out and is partly (and deliciously) described by the authors as it unfolds. All you really need to know to begin is that one day, our seven boys, complete with their familiar canon/fanon characters and appearances, move into a Sims house together. Which of course is what many of us have always wanted. From then on their shared life is as engaging (and surprising!) as you would expect. ( excerpt )As with the game, this rec is tagged Teen - please to be remembering that Sims are insecure little things and like bed sharing :) The link below takes you to the first day, and the others are here - while all the installments are wonderful in themselves, following the story to its warm and fuzzy conclusion is highly recommended! Fandom: AVENGERS Pairing: Gen: Frigga, Loki, Thor, Odin Length: 2550 words Author on LJ: what_alchemy Author Website: Author's AO3 page Why this must be read:Author's summary: When Odin places his Jötunn foundling in Frigga's arms, she knows what is to come.So...I grew up with a fondness for all trickster characters, including the Loki of Norse Mythology, but Loki of the MCU - especially from The Avengers - was difficult for me to love and his actions were almost impossible to excuse. This story does not excuse his actions, but it does, at least, go some way toward offering an explanation. Even more, though, this is a story about the strength of a mother's love for her sons, regardless of the fact that neither is the child of her womb. Móðir is a smart and moving piece of writing, and one which seamlessly melds Norse myth canon to the world of the Marvel movie!verse. Móðir

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK) Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 12,500 Author on LJ: http://thesmallhobbit.livejournal.com/Author Website: http://archiveofourown.org/users/Small_Hobbit/pseuds/Small_HobbitWhy this must be read:This is thesmallhobbit's Life on Mars Big Bang 2011 entry, and it's just a lovely piece. A crossover between LoM and Midsomer Murders but the main focus is definitely on LoM, I'd say. thesmallhobbit manages to catch the charm of both series and construe a really gripping murder case, something which I admire her for. She does write plot so well. But there's also a little Sam/Gene action in there, mostly h/c which she also does wonderfully. And, it being a Big Bang story, the story is a nice long read, either to be read in chapters or in one long go. Enjoy! Midsomer MarsAlso, the story is accompanied by some great art by togsos which may be found here: Midsomer Mars Art

Fandom: SOUTH PARK Pairing: Gregory/Mole, with slight Stan/Kyle and Kenny/Bebe Length: 50K Author on LJ: effingbirdsAuthor Website: Here on FF.net Why this must be read: The Second World War historical AU is a major subgenre in the SP fandom. Often you get writers structuring their stories taking place during this period around the relationship between Kyle, who is canonically Jewish, and Eric Cartman, who is hugely anti-Semitic and has been shown to idolize Hitler. Often Cartman is cast as a Nazi with a crush who saves Kyle from certain doom. Other times, Stan and Kyle meet in a concentration camp and fall in love there. I am not kidding, this is seriously a thing. Effingbirds' story turns the WWII dynamic on its head by setting her fic in occupied France. Her protagonist is Gregory, a romantic foil for Stan in the South Park movie. Here, Gregory is a British agent who parachutes into Rouen alongside Kenny in order to aid the resistance movement there. In France, Gregory meets Christophe, "the Mole," who is harboring refugee Kyle in his organizational role. Chris and Greg do end up together, but this story is, essentially, about Gregory's reclaiming his sense of self. In the process, the story subverts most of the cliches from a familiar pastiche and demonstrates how well AU works for South Park fic. The Well and the Lighthouse

Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS Pairing: McKay/Sheppard Length: 3,290 words Author on LJ: vanitashazeAuthor Website: unknown Why this must be read: Some of the dang best creepy imagery and little details. We get to see a scene out of John's teenager past straight out of a horror flick, ala Blair Witch. Then to see it repeated in Atlantis, our guy's refuge from all things scary in Pegasus. The intense little details vanitashaze uses sucks you into the narrative something fierce: Rodney's Jack O'Lantern grin, the use of the color gray, Simpson's beating foot reminiscent of a heartbeat, a grinning mask screaming from the trees of John's past, the morgue-like cold, ghoul-like faces of the searchers. It just all builds up to a shudder of horror when we're still left unresolved at the end. And that last phrase.... Just dang. ( Creepiest line ever... ) Mary, Melusine, Mary, Medea

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: none; gen Length: 10,459 words Author on LJ: surreallisAuthor Website: surreallis_fic (LJ Fic Journal), AO3Warning: violence Why this must be read: Author's Summary: "In the depths, the great old one slumbers. The powerful one. The great priest. The dreamer of dreams waits for the stars to align." But it was all just myth written by a strange old man. Wasn’t it? A fusion with HP Lovecraft, this tale takes SG-1 into a world of terrifying monsters, heavy fog, creepy villagers, and horror up the wazoo. Lovecraft is actually not something I enjoy; I usually find him just too crazy to enjoy. Yet Jenn has fused his horrific imagery with SG-1's just dang bad luck in getting the weird missions into a whole that will leave you gasping. You'll even end in a scream at the implication in the last line. ( Creepy stuff.. ) The Slumbering Place in the Stars
