Why this must be read: By the time the 74th Annual Hunger Games rolls around, the people of Panem are pretty well-adjusted to the existence and purpose of the Games. So it's easy to think that this may have always been the case. In this fic, the author bluntly presents a haunting overview of how that adjustment might have come about--and how much more blood was shed in the process. This is a story that will leave you frozen in your seat, and the endnote will make you rethink the entire book series.

Interlude: Tall borders were built between districts under the shifted gazes of an unquiet crowd. )

05:25 pm "Ordinary Girls" by Ember A. Keelty (PG-13)
Fandom: POKÉMON
Pairing: Gen
Length: 6450 words
Author Website: FanFiction.Net account
Why this must be read: I believe that keeping the characterization of an established character while narrating in the first person perspective is very difficult, but Ember A. Keelty really pulls it off in "Ordinary Girls." I remember being floored the first time I read this fic: it's quite powerful, and the twist, open-ended "resolution" of this fic certainly leaves room for interpretation. The best part of this fic has to be the characterization of Mars and Jupiter, though. It's a spot-on depiction of the cult mentality and the way it lingers after the fact. Even when there are a few leaps in the ways that characters like Dawn characterizatized, we can understand how she got there. All in all, this is an impressively written and compelling fic.

Excerpt: "Do you have a problem with pink?" she asks, taking a chug. )

06:47 pm The Apple Never Falls Far from the Tree by yellowrose87 (T, which is probably PG-13)
Fandom: DEATH NOTE
Pairings: L's Dad/L's Mom in the past-setting portions, plus L/Light in the present-setting portions
Length: ~5000
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: AO3 | Fanfiction.net
Why this must be read:

This fanfic has two distinct parts that are interwoven counterpoints to each other: one part being the story of how L's parents met and romanced, and the other part being a romance with similar features between L and Light. The way these two story threads are written and the way they interact feels very literary, moving and realistic. It is a very rare fanfic that has that "literary" feel, but this one does.

Furthermore, a lot of thought has obviously been put into it. Canon gives us only a few hints about L's parentage and past, and this fanfic takes all those hints and fleshes them out into an interesting, intriguing and utterly believable narrative that does not contradict canon in any way. Even the L/Light romance takes this non-canon pairing and makes it a subtle thing behind the scenes of canon, so that it doesn't contradict anything the audience knows from the manga/anime.

Fandom: DEATH NOTE
Pairing: none
Length: ~700
Author on LJ: Unknown

Why this must be read:

Occasionally a fanfic appears where a much-ignored minor character is examined brilliantly. This tiny ficlet does just that with Lind L. Tailor, and is also something of a character study of L as well. I like it for a number of reasons, but one reason is because it doesn't sugar-coat L's character. It portrays L as a pushy manipulator who doesn't express much emotion and is something of a jerk, and yet he is still a good guy; the fanfic doesn't go too far in the other direction into L-bashing either. It simply portrays L as he is, with his brilliance and his flaws, while also looking deep into the mind of a very minor character.

Why this must be read: because it’s a beautiful story with intricate and incredible plot which tells about love that shines through every sentence. There is everything you need in a great tale: fun and grief, excellent villain and wonderful supporting characters, past canon relationships and original individuals that make this story feel absolutely real. It’s a mix of canon and AU, supernatural and dreamlike ingredients that make at the end one delicious dish best served for long winter nights.

The archangel sighed, grew silent, and was enveloped in radiance. When the light dispersed, the angel said calmly. "No. I have your answer. We'll do the work for you."

"What?"

"Oh, yes. We'll test him for you. You can just sit back and reap the reward if he fails."

Mephistopheles narrowed his eyes. "You mean like Job?"

"Ah, child's play. Hutchinson can take great personal suffering. No, we have something entirely different in mind."

"Well, my master would like to get in one shot at him. There's this woman..."

"In the name of all that's holy, Mephisto, couldn't you be a little more original? With Hutchinson there usually is... All right. We'll divide the labor. We shall show Detective Hutchinson one path in life and you may show him another. We'll see which he chooses."

Why this must be read: I like Academy stories and this one is really great. It’s a short scene showing how much Starsky and Hutch complement each other and how much fun they have while doing so :)

"No fishing poles, no bait, nothing else is needed but what you have in your precious little bag."

"Yes." Starsky repeated.

Hutch paused, seemingly waiting for more explanation. When nothing came, he took a deep breath and ran a hand over his face. "Well, I guess this experience is going to have to fall into the category of seeing is believing," he said.

"And tasting," Starsky said, becoming more animated. "Just you wait, when we eat the fruits of our hard labor, washing it all down with a tall cold one, well, Hutch, it just doesn't get too much better than that."

"If you say so," Hutch said. "I'm going by faith here. Just goin' by faith..."

And that's exactly what I'm looking for, buddy, Starsky thought.
