08:51 am The Renaissance by Brighid (G)
Fandom: Stargate SG-1
Pairing: None or Jack/Daniel, depending on your preference, really
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brighidestone
Author Website: Brighid's Stargate SG-1 Poetry and Fiction
Why this must be read:

Brighid's The Sentinel work has been previously recommended here, but she's written in Stargate as well. I particularly wanted to point out her poetry...

...hey, wait! Where are you going?

Look, I know. Believe me, I do. Fan poetry scary, yes. I have somewhere - or did, I think I may have just lost it because my quotes file is corrupted, ack - a wonderful sonnet redouble based around Buffy's "The Gift," and that was pretty much it for fannish poetry until I found Brighid's work.

Much like Tripoli's story from last weekend, many of Brighid's poems come together for me into something that feels very true, almost revelatory, despite the brevity of the work. (If I hadn't been traveling, I'd have posted this earlier, so they could've been a paired recommendation.) I chose The Renaissance because it's my favorite, mostly for the last stanza, but I don't know that I would argue that it's her best. Do read through more than one; they're short, after all.

I will pray in the oldest circles
where everything that falls
rises.

09:05 am Hornblower Recs for February
Hey there. It's Waldo. and I'll be pushing Hornblower fics this month.

For those who don't know me, I'm a die-hard slasher and the worst hurt/comfort junkie known to man. So, you can kind of figure out what to expect from me from that. :)

What's a little unusual for me is that I don't have one-true-pairing or even a one-true-threesome for this fandom. I'll read damn near anything in the fandom (though I'm not keen on Pellew slash. Like the character fine, just don't slash him much), so I've got a few different pairings that I'll rec over the next few weeks.

I will be rec'ing fics that deal with the most recent movies. Is there anyone from the fandom still worried about spoilers for those? Unless I see comments here that ask for spoiler space or cuts for spoilers, I'm going to assume that we're all up to speed. I'm pretty sure most of the stuff I'm rec'ing is all movie-verse, but if I trip on something that's book-verse, I'll be sure to label it as such. :)

Cool? Cool.

Waldo.

09:08 am Future Perfect: Imperative by Artemis Artemis (PG13)
Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: Hercules/Iolaus
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hhandbasket
Author Website: Handbasket Holidays (H:tLJ and YH stories moved to Less Than Legendary Journeys)
Why this must be read: "Future Perfect: Imperative" is one of my all time favorite Hercules stories and one of my many favorite Artemis Artemis stories, because it's funny. Fall down, laugh out loud, hurt yourself funny, and all the humor comes out of the natural canon characterizations. The plot concerns Aphrodite bringing the adult Hercules and Iolaus back in time to meet their younger selves from the Young Hercules era. The Aphrodite of the past is impatient for young Hercules and Iolaus to get together, and thinks showing them what a great couple their older selves are will expedite her desire for: "I want... flesh! I want carnage! I want naked boys rolling around next to the campfire! I want... I want... to exercise my divine right to voyeurism!!" Needless to say, no one cooperates. The humor and the mix of poignant moments, where the older characters see the young Iolaus and realize what he's got in store for him, make for an excellent story on all levels. Artemis Artemis has also written NC17 Hercules fiction, and also writes as Helena Handbasket.

10:31 am Cut-tags
As 60% of respondents want cut-tags at the reccers discretion only (nearly 70% voted against making them mandatory), that’s the way we’re going to handle it. A couple guidelines:

1. If your review is longer than several paragraphs, consider a cut-tag. Either leave a couple paras un-cut, with a "read more" tag hiding the rest, or use your opening paragraph or a similarly generous teaser inside the cut-tag text.

2. If you’re quoting directly from the fic, consider putting that passage behind a cut-tag marked "excerpt", regardless of length. Again, this is not mandatory, but keep in mind some may consider excerpts spoilery.

3. If you do use cut-tags, always leave the story link outside of the tags.

Thanks!

11:25 am Greener on the Other Side by kel (PG-13)
Fandom: West Wing
Pairing: Sam/Josh
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] throughadoor
Author Website: songs about the impossibility of singing
Why this must be read:

Because it's another of those rare beasts, a reasonably happy Josh/Sam. Because it's beautifully written. Because of this:

Sam leaves, and he knows he'll write a great speech about HR 658. He knows that Andrew David will read it in his hesitant and bumbling way and that he'll slur the words and pronounce "via" phonetically and forget what the acronym MADD stands for. And Sam knows that he doesn't care, because he's not writing for Andrew David. He's not even writing for the promise of the politicians who will come after Congressman David, the ones who will do his words justice. He's writing for the smile on Josh's face, for the pride in his voice. He's writing for Josh.

The author's summary is: "He tells himself that this is what good men do. They make compromises when great men can't." A story in reverse counterbalance.

Just a lovely story. Go read.
