Why this must be read: I have a weakness for well-written fairy tale-inspired fic. 'In the Country Of' doesn't fall into the usual category of "re-write a fairy tale with characters and settings from a particular fandom", which is rarely pulled off successfully; rather, it tells an original Farscape story in a fairy tale style, and it works so well. The prose has a simple beauty that makes it a joy to read, and the ending, without giving anything away, is perfect.

Why this must be read: Iolaus discovers that he has a son who is about to swear himself to Ares. To prevent it, Iolaus puts himself in Ares' power and ends up on the opposite side of a war from Hercules. Hercules has to figure out a way to fix all this. This is a well-written story with the right amount of angst and great characterization.

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dan/Casey friendship
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] callmesandy
Author Website: lowercase k collected
Why this must be read:

Set between Draft Day 2000 and April is the Cruellest Month, Dan spends several agonising days hoping he hasn't completely ruined his friendship with Casey and trying to make amends with everyone else. As usual with k's stories, there is a mountain of subtext going on, exploring the bonds of friendship and loyalty through the various books people are reading. Dan's trepidation and uncertainty shine through and even though you want to be angry with Casey for being so cold, you just can't. Everyone has a part to play and while the ending is ambiguous, there's just the tiniest ray of hope shining through.

Fandom: ALIAS
Pairing: Will/Allison
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] parkergray

Why this must be read: This is a beautiful, AU look into Will, post-"The Telling". Parker does great job finding his voice and this actually makes Allison into a human being, as opposed to the cold, hard person she is.

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex

Author Website: Disenchanted Kingdom
Why this must be read:

Those of you who read my rec for The Prize know red Kryptonite tends to make Clark (canonically) a little sexually aggressive. This is quite a different version of Red!Clark, though, and this time it’s Lex who gets fucked. fucked over.

Lame jokes aside, this is actually a really chilling portrait of Lex. It’s no secret that he craves Clark: his attention, his trust, his truth. Just him. Here we see how much he’s willing to compromise to have him.

SO good: Incarnadine (48K)
