12:06 pm Speak to Me by Hafren (PG)
Fandom: BLAKE'S 7
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hafren
Author Website: Hafren's Gloomy Patch of the Forest
Why this must be read:

It's always interesting to read a story written from an unusual, non-human POV, and the computer characters on B7 really aren't explored nearly often enough in fic (or, for that matter, in canon). So finding a believable, insightful story written from Zen's point-of-view is a real pleasure. And finding a believable, insightful Zen-POV story that rips your heart out and leaves you wanting to cry for the poor machine is beyond amazing.

It's very short, and quoting the best bits would, I think, be a mistake, but here's how it starts:
It is the voice of command. At last. The tone, the pitch I was made to respond to, that lets me in. The voice of reason and thought. Since I was quiet, there has been nothing for so long. Then voices again, but dark voices, the voices of guards or slaves. Now, at last, a light voice.

I want to respond. But I was left silent. Active: I am here, I am conscious of you. But I cannot answer you, obey you, until you engage me.

02:41 pm This Love (these little lies we tell), by Jay Tryfanstone (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] tryfanstone
Author Website: http://www.geocities.com/tryfanstone/ficlinks.htm
Why this must be read:

Highlander is rich in minor characters. The delight for many writers is expanding them, especially mortals, against the unnatural lives of our heroes.

This is an outstanding example of just that. The character is more minor than most, but comes to life, and then to life again, beautifully.

Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Frasker/Kowalski
Author on LJ: Not that I'm aware of
Author Website: http://yearningvoid.net/nemoinis/
Why this must be read:

This story must be read because it's hot. Period. If you're looking for a serious plot this isn't for you. However you want really well-written smut that is very much in character then you're going to love this.

05:40 pm Quantum Xander by Jameschick (NC-17)
Fandom: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Pairing: Spike/Xander
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] jameschick
Author Website: Jameschick Fics
Why this must be read: To be honest I wanted to recommend all of her stories but this is one of my favorites. Jameschick really won me over to slash and this award winning story is long, funny, romantic and heartbreaking. Obviously influenced by Quantum Leap this story takes Xander through a host of alternate realities each representing a different turn his life could have taken. There's a sequel as well as a host of lovely stories on her site.

Ever wish you knew how different your life could have been?

09:15 pm Wait Until Dim by Shay Sheridan (PG)
Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shayheyred
Author Website: none
Why this must be read:

Where the last rec was pure, unadulterated smut, this one has no smut whatsoever. That's right, I'm recc'ing a gen story. But it's a really good gen story! Wonderful dialogue that really sounds like Ray and Fraser and a plot that's suspenseful and engaging. Shay does a wonderful job of showing the emotional connection between these two characters so even a dyed-in-the-wool slasher like myself was left satisfied.
