12:01 am Against That Time by William Chandler (PG)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: Horatio Hornblower/William Bush (implied)
Author on LJ:NA
Author Website:NA
Why this must be read:

This is a short fic based in the Hornblower bookverse, specifically Lord Hornblower, and once again the events of Caudebec are replayed but with a different aftermath. It is a look at Hornblower and his emotional coming to account for his actions and his feelings in regards to William Bush.

Beautifully sad.

Spoiler rich as to the fate of Captain Bush in the book canon.

I'm your new Smallville reccer for the month, and I've got a list of some really fantastic stories to bring to you!

Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock
Author Website: Glitterati

Why this must be read: We'll start out with a hilarious favorite of mine, Adaptability by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock. Pru writes fantastic Smallville humor--she just comes up with these ideas you'd be downright terrified of sometimes, and makes them work, and they're all the better for the sheer energy and pizzazz she brings to the table. She likes to pretend this story doesn't exist, and kind of clams up at the word "assbaby", but....

You'll laugh. You'll laugh. You'll cringe. You'll put Lex up for sainthood and still want to cuddle Clark *all the time*.

Quote:

Hunched over his desk, Lex made a list, writing out each of Clark's supposed symptoms of pregnancy in purple Pilot Precise pen:

Fatigue.
Cravings.
Dizziness.
Alien.

Lex stared at the list for a moment before adding:

Prettier than he is smart.

And then the ending is rather reminiscent of one of those monster movie endings, where they have the dramatic theme music, and the dun-dun-dun. Just--this story is *adorable*, it has an utterly distinctive Clark characterization, a sadly put-upon Lex, and it's absolutely laugh out loud funny.

08:58 am The Institute by Ventura33 (PG)
Fandom: STAR TREK TNG
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: Ventura33 Fanfiction
Why this must be read:

Back in the day when the Borg were a new and utterly chilling enemy, Picard experienced the 'worst of both worlds.' Assimilated against his will into the Collective, he was responsible for a great deal of devastation and suffering as Locutus. Unlike later events in the Trek universe, all was not forgotten immediately afterward; Picard's physical recovery, and his coming to grips with what he did as well as what was done to him, took time. "The Institute" beautifully echoes this theme of healing as well as shows the lasting effects of the Borg experience on the individual. Although this story is technically a sequel to "The Relevance of Hope" and "Imperfection", it stands quite well on its own.

10:22 am Legend of the Perfect Union by JRF Patton (PG-13)
Hey,

It's [livejournal.com profile] comice, aka Anjou, back with another tale of Mulder and Scully ... and this time, it's a casefile.

Fandom: The X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: unknown
Author Website: unknown

Why this must be read:

This long, complicated casefile features great conversations about faith vs. reason, one of the major motifs of the X-Files. Set toward the latter end of the seventh season, the story expands upon the differences between the two partners as they tackle first a gruesome murder mystery, and then a metaphysical mystery that they stumble into because of the wedding of one of Scully's childhood best friends. The themes of trust and the true meaning of their partnership underlie all of their interactions.

Legend features a world-weary Scully who isn't sure where exactly her faith lies, and a Mulder in full profiler mode who is determined to find it and her, and forge a new partnership.

This is a long, but richly layered read, so settle in and enjoy.

10:24 am Ripping Up The Rampion by minervacat (PG)
Fandom: LotRiPS
Pairing: Viggo/Orlando
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] minervacat
Author Website: When the Floods Roll Back
Why this must be read:

Although this fic is Orlando-centric, it manages to say quite a bit about Viggo, and the characterization is spot-on. The mark of a good fic, it leaves me wanting but not *needing* to know more.

Viggo sets the beer, empty now, on the table and inhales again, exhaling in Orlando's direction. "Most people," he says slowly. "When they decide to have a breakdown and spend money on things they don't need, they buy houses. Or cars. Or a new wife. Vegetables aren't bank-breakers, in the grand scheme of things."

"It's not a breakdown," Orlando says. "It's just lettuce."

11:28 am The Essential Ingredients by Anna S. (PG)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: None, Noranti-focused Gen.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] themoonbar
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:

Noranti is not exactly a well beloved character in Farscape; not even the other characters can stand her. Something very strange happens when good writers start writing about her, however - she becomes sympathetic and understandable, even while she's spitting into the soup.

Almost less than nothing is known about Noranti's backstory, or why in hezmana she would possibly want to latch on to John and the rest of Moya's crew the way she does, but Anna here presents an interesting possibility for Noranti's motivations that rings very true to what we do see.

Did you hear about John Crichton? )

Go, read, review, and maybe understand "Granny" a little better.

Why this must be read: I bring you porn, people. Good, no GREAT porn. It is a first-time fic and what struck me about this fic is Casey's need to hear Dan's voice. Plus, did I mention it is great porn?

03:36 pm Jason and Me, by David Hines (R)
Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] hradzka
Author Website: Fanfiction.net profile
Why this must be read:

When Stephanie Brown first became Robin, there was a lot of meta both in canon and in the fandom about her similarities to Jason Todd, known to all as the Robin Who Died. This fic explores those similarities further, and explores Steph's character when she put on the suit. It gets inside Steph's head and the heads of everyone in the Batfamily, who see all the ways she is just like Jason, and the ways that could (and, ultimately, does) lead to her death. It's all about what it means to be Robin, the history, the pain and the love behind that one suit.

I hadn't even heard of Stephanie, or most of the Batfamily for that matter, when I first read this fic, but it made me fall in love with her. The ccomics dealing with Stephanie-as-Robin ended up being pretty awful, and every time I read this fic I wish that this were canon. It can also act as a handy introduction to all the members of the Batfamily, as Stephanie visits each one asking about Jason.

09:06 pm Ill Met By Moonlight, by Naomi Prince (PG-13)
Fandom: HERCULES: THE LEGENDARY JOURNEYS
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] naomi1642
Author Website: The Less Than Legendary Journeys
Why this must be read:

Naomi Prince's stories balance between sharp-witted humor and a solid, serious adventure plot, and the characterization is always excellent. 'Ill Met By Moonlight' is one of her best, managing to be grim and hilarious by turns : the plot features a hapless journalist who wants to interview Hercules and gets dragged headlong into a nightmarish adventure concerning a midnight race, the goddess Hecate, a townful of ghosts and a pack of undead dogs.

I love stories where you get an outsider's perspective on the heroes' relationship, and the journalist's increasingly bewildered response to Hercules and Iolaus is priceless. Plus, there's the oh-so-married bickering between Hercules and Iolaus - why yes, I have a soft spot for bickering *g* - and the hurt/comfort, and the clever dialogue, and the inventive use of Hecate, a goddess sadly missing from the H:tLJ series.

Just a great, hugely entertaining story.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Tim/Kon/Bart
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] weirdnessmagnet
Author Website: http://www.weirdnessmagnet.com/
Why this must be read:

Because it's hot like a hot hot thing. Burn your panties, light your screen on fire hot. This is sex pollen fic, and while there's a lot of really awesome sex pollen fic in this fandom, this is possibly my favorite.

I'd call it a PWP, but to me, this fic says a lot about the character of all three boys, and what they mean to each other. They're cute and they love each other and they're such teenagers, even Tim.
