Why this must be read:

One of the difficulties when you're reccing an immensely popular fandom is that so much of the good stuff has been recced before. Ah, first world issues. That being said, while it's a bit on the "eh" side to rec an author twice in one turn of the wheel, I was extremely surprised that this story hadn't been recced before. Library porn, people. This story is legendary among my circle of friends. Because: library porn. And in this case it's not so much the kinky kind of porn, but the geeky ooh-library kind. Which is just as good.

09:41 am Shaking It Off by Penny Proctor (aka EJ Andrews) (G)
Fandom: STAR TREK ENTERPRISE
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: none
Author Website: EJ's Voyager Stories
Why this must be read:

Penny is best known for her Voyager stories (like the classic Revisionist History), but this lone foray into ENT is noteworthy as well. A vignette set in "Broken Bow", the character voice is astonishingly on target. Hoshi Sato comes alive for the reader like she rarely did on screen, and the sense of excitement at the outset of Enterprise's mission--as well as the danger--is clearly felt.

This is my last rec of the month, so I'll close by saying I hope you've all enjoyed these stories as much as I have.

12:04 pm Refractions of the Truth by LLL (G)
Fandom: STAR WARS
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ:
Author Website: Her SW fic can be found here
Why this must be read:

For the sheer joy of watching Palpatine turn a political opponent on a dime. This is the man who could manipulate on a galactic level and make the people who oppose him think they are in the wrong.

LLL takes Valorum - the ex-Chancellor ousted in TPM amid allegations of corruption - and shows a good, if weak, man still serving as a senator. This is a confrontation between the two about the actions during the trade blockade some time later. Told from Valorum's point of view there is a sense of palpable confusion and betrayal from one whom he mentored, while Palpatine remains almost entirely inscrutable - save for a barely discernable distaste for the Jedi. And despite knowing Palpatine's part in both trilogies the author makes his arguments so eminently reasonable that you almost believe what he's saying.

05:34 pm Small Mercies by MC (NC-17)
Fandom: YAMI NO MATSUEI
Pairing: Terazuma/Wakaba
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] threewalls
Author Website: N/A
Why this must be read: Erm...because it's deliciously hot? I'm a total softie for tales of genderfuckery, and they may as well be YnM canon given Watari's predilection for concocting sex-change formulae. Small Mercies sees Wakaba shopping with a doped-up Terazuma for some much-needed lingerie before Terazuma, who shares his body (unwillingly!) with a ferocious parasite shikigami who can't abide the touch of the opposite sex, discovers a practical use for Watari's potion. There's something of the hardboiled detective about Terazuma's narrative voice, which makes the story all the more cracktastic, but beneath the humour and the sexiness, the quiet tragedy of their thwarted relationship is never forgotten.

08:35 pm 'Mirror Image' by Betty Ragan (PG)
Fandom: BLAKE'S 7
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2
Author Website: not known

Why this must be read:

Despite the story arcs in later series, the episodic structure of Blake's 7, and the use of one-off writers for many episodes, leaves many questions unanswered. One of the questions which has always bothered me was the fate of Our Heroes' family and friends, and the people they meet along the way. What happens to them after the Liberator crew have departed in search of fame and glory? The fate of Maryatt's family in episode twelve of the first series, 'Deliverance', shows us that being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a crime in itself, and that the Federation arm has a very long reach.

In [livejournal.com profile] astrogirl2's 'Mirror Image', Blake encounters a brother he has long believed dead and the meeting brings him face to face with the some of the consequences of his actions. The narrative voice here is bleak and matter-of-fact and perfectly suited to the subject material. This is not a cheerful story and that is one of the reasons why it is so convincing. I found myself thinking 'Yes. This could have happened' while I was reading, and I don't have any higher praise than that.

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Dan/Casey
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] khohen1
Author Website:kHo's Fanfiction
Why this must be read:This ficlet centers on a conversation between Dan and Casey about "Lost", Charlie, and deserted islands. Very funny story and the author has a good grasp on the Sorkinesque (that can't be a word) dialogue.

Fandom: THE OC
Pairing: Luke/Seth
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] paranoidkitten
Author Website: paranoid kitten’s fic journal
Why this must be read: Who’s Luke, you ask? Well, he’s Marissa’s ex-boyfriend from season 1. And he’s hot. We discovered his Dad was gay that season so they had to move to Portland. Yep, that’s the OC for ya. Anyhoo, this ficlet is cute. And it’s an unlikely pairing, sure, but it just seems so truthful and Luke-like (there really isn’t enough Luke slash out there). I love it. And hopefully you will too.
