Why this must be read: Despite the story arcs in later series, the episodic structure of Blake's 7, and the use of one-off writers for many episodes, leaves many questions unanswered. One of the questions which has always bothered me was the fate of Our Heroes' family and friends, and the people they meet along the way. What happens to them after the Liberator crew have departed in search of fame and glory? The fate of Maryatt's family in episode twelve of the first series, 'Deliverance', shows us that being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a crime in itself, and that the Federation arm has a very long reach.
In
astrogirl2's 'Mirror Image', Blake encounters a brother he has long believed dead and the meeting brings him face to face with the some of the consequences of his actions. The narrative voice here is bleak and matter-of-fact and perfectly suited to the subject material. This is not a cheerful story and that is one of the reasons why it is so convincing. I found myself thinking 'Yes. This
could have happened' while I was reading, and I don't have any higher praise than that.
