09:37 am The Fairest of the Seasons by ingve9 (R)
Fandom: LotRiPS
Pairing: Dom/Billy
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ingve9
Author Website: Fic Index
Why this must be read:

The weather becomes a main character in this sometimes melancholy, always sweet Monaboyd fic. The author uses her personal experience with winters in Hawaii and New York to paint a poignant picture of Dom's homesickness. The way Billy cheers him up is both beautiful and hot. As supporting characters, Viggo, Elijah and Evey are all recognizable yet unique. Plus, nuns. I love nuns.

There's everything you'd find at home, except it's nothing at all like you'd find at home. Trees, for instance. Ironwoods, banyans, jacarandas; trees so big you can live in them. Ripe guavas and avocados dropping right in your path. But no oaks. No pines. No holly or mistletoe that isn't plastic. Apples only in shops, and they may as well be twenty-eight karat gold for what you have to pay.

11:07 am Belles Lettres by Journey and Denise Raymond (NC17)
Fandom: due South
Pairing: Fraser/RayK
Authors on LJ: unsure on both counts.
Author's Websites: Journey's due South Fanfiction; I'm sure Denise has a website somewhere, but I don't have it.
Why this must be read:

I almost fell over when I realised no one had recced this yet. This is relatively recent, if I remember my due South fannishness correctly, one of the newer fics for both of these autors. Ray and Fraser write letters to each other, which is the freaking cutest thing ever. Just, yes. Writing kink. I fully embrace it.

11:38 am Rise Up No More by Otter (PG-13)
I've been having a much busier month than I expected, so less recs than I wanted to do. To make it even harder a lot of the good stuff is rec'd in the memories so it's hard finding new stuff! And as I'm an Australian, I'm trying to avoid Serenity-spoiled fics ;)

Fandom: FIREFLY
Pairing: Gen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] agentotter
Author Website: http://www.fadedpress.com/index.html
Why this must be read:

This story is an attempt at explaining some of the mystery of Book, why he has connections to the military and why he is a Sheppard. It's nicely detailed and the touches of characterisation are spot on. It's a good, solid, exposition of part of the 'verse.

12:00 pm Revelation by Rosiespark (G)
Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER
Pairing: William Bush/Archie Kennedy
Author on LJ:[livejournal.com profile] rosiespark
Author Website:NA
Why this must be read:

This fic is set in the A&E adaptation universe, specifically the episode Retribution, and is part of the fandom genre known as DKU (Dead Kennedy Universe). In my estimation this is the best missing scene I have read on this subject.

The author portrays Bush with reserve, a professional manner, and lack of open emotionalism, displaying a careful calculation overlaid on something much deeper. All traits that are perfectly characteristic. Kennedy's courage is obvious and dramatic and is a true thing. But what makes this fic stand out in this particular genre is the author's skill in providing a layer for Bush that isn't often seen, yet is distinctly correct. Bush has had to find a sort of courage that isn't as obvious or dramatic as Kennedy's sacrifice. Quietly and carefully in his own manner.

Wonderfully crafted in a short span of words.

01:11 pm The Proposition by Emelerin (R)
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] emelerin
Author Website: Stories in her Memories section
Why this must be read:

There's this society woman who has the audacity to come on to Clark and offer him money to sleep with her! Naturally, Clark is wibbly and distraught and tells his good pal Lex who is surprisingly not so very concerned.

Or so it would seem:

"I...I said no. She looked sorta sad, and then a bit mad, and then she left. Are you okay, Lex? You're not...angry, or something?"

Lex was still laughing. If Clark hadn't been feeling the beginnings of a weirdly indignant version of anger, he would have been fascinated. He hadn't seen Lex laugh like that in years.

"I can't believe she did that. Oh, Clark. I'm sorry." Lex was struggling to recover, his face still contorted in helpless laughter. "I thought she had more sense than that. What was she thinking trying that with you?"

Clark frowned. What the hell was that supposed to mean?

You start to get a little worried there, but all turns out as it should, thank goodness. This story is adorable--funny, hot, obsessive, twisted and an eternal favorite of mine. Settle in with a confectionary treat of your choice and see why Clark and Lex are so clearly supposed to be together.

01:40 pm Lilah's Coffin by Durendal (PG)
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Gen, with some Clark/Lex type things
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] eleveninches
Author Website: that boy ain't right
Why this must be read:

Put a bunch of football players in a haunted shack, performing a superstitious goat-sacrificing ritual. Add in a vampire type that Clark raises from the dead who happens to have a little crush on the town's hot, shiny billionaire in the mansion, and you have a real gem of a fic. (Dude. This sounds like badfic, but honestly, it's just really, really genius S1 fic.)

I like quoting from stories. They pull you in, don't you think? *hums*

He didn't know much about livestock, but he was pretty certain cows didn't fly. He was also sure running over teenagers usually killed them, so perhaps the laws of science didn't function normally in Smallville.

The cow let out a weak "moo," and promptly rolled off the crushed metal. As Lex stared at the remains of his car he remembered why he hated this town.

He dialed the only phone number he knew in Smallville.

"Hello?"

"A cow just crushed my car," he said blandly.

Clark's silence was a testimony that Lex wasn't the only one confused. "I'll come pick you up," Clark offered.

Or! Or! Okay, here's another one!

"Clark, she's here," Lex called. He didn't respond. Lex chuckled nervously. "Oh, I'm the bait. Hey, uh, if your plan is to get me killed, then it seems to be working."

"Shiny," came a hiss.

"I have no self-esteem left after this," Lex said.

Okay, resist that. I *dare* you.

03:47 pm Out for Number One by Apathy (PG-13)
Fandom: FARSCAPE
Pairing: References to Braca/Grayza and Braca/OFC
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] apathocles Fic Journal: [livejournal.com profile] lemon_curry
Author Website: Unknown
Why this must be read:

I freely admit, I have a weakness for the "Five things that never happened to..." genre. Apathy has distinguished herself as one of the masters of this genre for Farscape, along with Astrogirl and Cofax. In fact she's already been rec'd here for her Five Things that Never Happened to Chiana, Shades Of Grey. Here she tackles a slightly more difficult subject matter: everybody's favorite quintessential Peacekeeper Miklo Braca.

Braca is deucedly difficult to write, especially Five Things, because so very little is known about his history. He has a very distinct and consistent personality and motivations, but we're given only hints and teases of how he got that way. Thus instead of the usual Five Things trope of going through his history point by point and choosing turning points that could have gone differently, Apathy presents a set of extraordinary situations and puts Braca in them, just being Braca. The result is five vignettes that ring frighteningly true - things Braca never did, but very easily could have, each highlighting a facet of his personality.

I'm still not sure whether I should beleive you )

Go, read, and reward loyal service and ruthless cunning with a nice review.

05:50 pm Growing Up by Nafio (Rish)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: AJ McLean / Nick Carter
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nafs
Author Website: Idle Dreams
Why this must be read:

This story is a group of ficlets that follow AJ and Nick as their relationship shifts and changes as they grow up together in The Backstreet Boys. This Nick is sweet and earnest and knows what he wants, while AJ is smart and insightful, or at least when he takes the time to look around him and within himself to see what everyone else knows. I love Nick's mixture of youth and maturity and confidence. This is probably a more together Nick than the reality, but not a far stretch of who he could be. And when he comes into his own and takes AJ at his word at the end it is fantastic. AJ is just human and that is wonderful all on its own since he oftentimes tends to be larger than life (pun intended. ;). Add there is even some UST between Nick (and AJ) and Howie to make me happy.

When his cell phone rang ten minutes before the buses were due to pull out, A.J. knew it was Nick. In the whole history of having five buses, he'd spent maybe ten nights on his own.  )

06:28 pm Cloudbusting by Mab (NC-17)
I am the worst. rec'er. ever. Alas, RL intervened, but now I'm going to do four over the next four days. Prepare for spam. *bg*

Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Author on lj: [livejournal.com profile] mab_browne
Website: none
Why this must be read:

Mab's world can be a very scary place. She kills people. She turns them into vampires, haunts them, hurts them, makes them run from the scary stuff hiding in the darkness, and when things go bump in the night it isn't always the boys getting busy. But even if she leaves you standing on the side of a lonely road in the middle of the night with a single pair of headlights bearing down on you through the fog, you will at least take comfort in the fabulous pacing, gorgeous language and intricate plotting.

Cloudbusting is set post-TS by BS (the end of the series for the non-TS fluent) and actually isn't one of her supernatural epics. It is, however, angsty, passionate, fascinating, and contains the single most wrenching transition I've ever read in fan fiction. If you're an angst-junkie like me, you're gonna love this one. Make it hurt, baby.

Fandom: DC COMICS
Pairing: Tim/Kon
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shrift
Author Website: Shrift's Fan Fiction
Why this must be read:

I apologize that I'm cramming so many recs in in the last few days of June; personal circumstances have made it difficult for me to get internet access.

To go in a different direction from my last couple of recs, I offer up humor fic. But this isn't just any humor fic; this is cracked-out, brilliant, hilarious, In-character, seriously hot cliche fic. It's a classic slash set-up: Character A has to become a hooker for whatever reason. (I like to think that it's a little more plausible here than in a lot of fics I've read in the same vein, because Tim really *has* crossdressed for justice before in his career as Robin. No, really--he had a conversation with Alfred about what size fake breasts to use.)

And of course, this time, Tim needs a wing man.

Author Website: Petra's Fanfic
Why this must be read:

Another humor fic for today. I adore this fic beyond all reason, and not just because I was there while Petra was writing it. It's... well, it's kinkfic. Fisting kinkfic. But even if that's not your thing, you should read it anyway, because this is one of the funniest stories I've ever read in *any* fandom, and it's also wonderfully hot.

I love the concept of this story, because really, how do we know that Kryptonians *don't* have special Alien Sex Needs? And wouldn't Clark have to explain these needs to Kon, because who else could? And wouldn't it be extremely fucking weird to have Superman as your own personal sex ed teacher? Poor Kon.

08:52 pm The Angels You Need, by Te and Mary (NC-17)

Pairing: Bruce/Jason, Jason/Steph, Jason/Tim, Tim/Kon, Jason/Clark... quite a few
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] thete1 and [livejournal.com profile] monkeycrackmary
Author Website: Teland and Ink Stigmata
Why this must be read:

I saved the best for last. This is a long, plotty, *long* series by Mary and Te, and it's quite possibly my favorite story in the DCU. It's an AU, centering around a What If: What if Batman died, and Jason lived?

I'm not quite sure what to say about it, aside from the fact that it's brilliant. I love what they've done to every character here, both the subtle changes and the not-so-subtle ones. It retells canon events much better than the actual canon told them, IMHO, and every character, even the ones that only have small cameos, feels absolutely real and absolutely like who they'd be in a universe where Jason was Batman. I warn you beforehand, it's addictive, and you might want to avoid the last story if you dislike cliffhangers.

This is an absolute must-read in this fandom. Even if you don't know who the characters are, read it anyway--because these stories are so different from the actual canon, being extremely familiar with the comics isn't absolutely necessary to read them.

If you only read one story that I rec this month, make it this one.
