I've been a very bad driver, abandoning you all for a while there (bad Life! stop getting in the way!) but I return with a little rec-spam today. I hope you enjoy! ~~~~~ Wesley: I have, in fact, faced two vampires myself. Under controlled circumstances, of course. Giles: Well, no danger of finding those here. Wesley: Vampires? Giles: Controlled circumstances. -"Bad Girls" Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: Angel/Wesley Author on LJ: poisoninjestAuthor Website: http://www.ficbitch.com/Why this must be read:This Angel/Wesley fic bring Teh Angst in a most delicious way. There's not a whole lot I can say beyond, "Holy god, this is good." This is pre-S3 Wes-fic exactly how I like it, angsty with a pinch of complete desperation. I've also linked to the alternate ending because both versions are utterly delicious. Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairing: none Author on LJ: seperisAuthor Website: IndulgenceWhy this must be read: Week 2 - quieter stories that don't get a lot of press, but should definitely be read. There's a reason Jenn gets rec'ced a lot. And I mean A LOT. She's a fabulous writer with a number of great stories to her name in a variety of fandoms. I like this story because it's quiet. It's not about a relationship, there's no sex, no great action sequences or meteor freaks. It does what a story's supposed to do - it captures an emotional moment and makes it real. It totallys gets where the characters are coming from, and how hard it can be to live with not knowing the Truth. It's a post-Hug story. The episode where Lex shot Clark with a machine gun. It's a post-Nicodemus story. The episode where the pretty flower turned everyone towards their baser instincts - Lana dressed up like a slut and assaulted Lex with condiments. The story is two conversations between Lex and Lana. They're friends who know what it's like to be lied to, to know you've done something and not be able to remember what. How the knowing is more important than the thing itself. And because of this, they understand each other in a way that no one else can. It works. Beautifully. Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: as Kita says in her AN: "Wesley muses. Angel has sex with everyone in the universe. Sort of." Author on LJ: kita0610Author Website: http://www.ficbitch.comWhy this must be read:This fic haunted me. Still haunts me. It's a perfect look at Angel's demons and Wesley's fascination with them. A little Angel/Spike thrown in for flavor and voila. The ending lands like a punch to the gut. This fic will stay with you for a long time. "And I cannot lie and say that I am satisfied. I cannot say that when his home and office and world exploded, and he rushed into the flames to save what he could, that my heart did not stop at the thought that he saved me.""VI"

Fandom: Farscape Pairing: MG/JC Summary: Reminiscences of Commandant Mele-on Grayza Email: windysearose@hotmail.com Livejournal: searosePosted: December 2002 originally Searose can be relied upon for the most marvelous analyses of almost anything under the sun. I’ve picked her brain for a couple of years now, and have enjoyed doing so. With this story of Commandant Grayza, set early in Season Four, Searose conjures up an image of ruthless pragmatism intercut with ambition and pride, for a portrait that still holds true. Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: Wesley and Faith (friendship, though it can be more if you squint) Author on LJ: nikitangelAuthor Website: My Fic (LJ tagged)Why this must be read:There are distressingly few fics that deal with Faith's reaction to the events in Not Fade Away. I'm a whore for Faith and, obviously, Wesley as characters so their relationship ends me. Nikitangel's Faith voice is superb as it deftly reflects on the strange, tenuous, not-relationship Faith and Wesley shared. ~ Brits know how to say goodbye.

Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairing: none really Author on LJ: lastscorpionAuthor Website: Last Scorpion's FicsWhy this must be read: She's never been rec'ced here, but many people will know her "Darn!" Drabbles from the wednesday100. Aside from the fact this story features the greatest Lionel death ever mentioned in a throwaway line, it's also a heart-wrenching look at what people are willing to do to protect themselves. Returning to Smallville for Lana's wedding, Lex is confronted with memories he can't quite place. His world revolves around a PDA that helps him manage his life, that helps him remember what he's supposed to. It's intriguing and sad, and the author does a great job of dropping small details about what Lex does and doesn't remember. Fans of the show will recognize tons of canon references, which the author uses extremely well to round out the story. Fandom: LotRiPS Pairing: Viggo/Orlando, Orlando/Elijah Author on lj: zarah5Author website: What It IsWhy this must be read: "Catalyst" has something of a unique concept: Orlando goes color-blind. But beyond wondering where that idea will end up, I really enjoy Zarah's style of writing-- This fic has an almost lyrical quality to it, exploring Orlando's thought process as his life loses its color. Elijah as a secondary character is both real and vulnerable, and Orlando is given more depth than some authors allow him. "Catalyst" is a well-observed and thoughtful fic that I find myself coming back to over and over. He guesses there might be a cruel sense of irony to the fact that he used to like film noirs. The lack of color always seemed to emphasize gestures, emotions; everything appeared sharper and more meaningful, details that might have faded into the background in color movies were brought into focus.
Reality, however, lacks the stark contrasts usually found in black-and-white movies. Without their harsh lightning, purposefully employed to pale brightness and blacken darkness, everything presents itself in shades of gray: washed out, lacking contours and life.
Orlando blinks against the wind that burns in his eyes, stares at the ocean and tries to stop thinking.Catalyst

Fandom: THE OC Pairing: Gen. Ryan. Trey. Rosa. (Maybe Ryan/cigarettes) Author on LJ: cianconnellWhy this must be read:This story captures one of the things that made me fall in love with this show--the sense of displacement and fear and bravado that characterized S1 Ryan Atwood. Cianconnell gets into Ryan's head, showing his muddle as he tried to make sense of his place in the Cohen family. The author also does a nice job of filling out backstory and paints a very real picture of Ryan's life as younger brother to Trey. By using a POV switch to a tertiary character at the end of the story, Cianconnell gives us perspective, lets us see Ryan as he can't see himself. Again, I've chosen a story with not a lot of overall plot, but one that fleshes out characters in a real and sympathetic manner. ( Excerpt: )The Tell.

Fandom: STARGATE SG-1 Pairing: Daniel/Janet Author on LJ: mazilyAuthor Website: circlegirl.comWhy this must be read:I must confess it's always amazed me that there's such a following for a pairing that has SO little basis in canon, but sometimes Daniel/Janet is written in such a way that it just works. This Janet is brittle, and a little bitter. The fic is wistful, and entirely believable, and (of course) beautifully written. ( excerpt )And Then Let Me Walk Away

Fandom: STAR TREK TOS Pairing: Kirk/Spock Author on LJ: none Author Website: Invisible PlanetsWhy this must be read:This is a classic retelling of the standard 'Shuttle crash strands our intrepid heroes and Kirk must step in when Spock unexpectedly goes into pon farr' storyline, but with a twist. (Hint: there's a reason the alternate title is "If My Aunt From Minnesota Wrote Star Trek"). Every single word is a gem, and I guarantee you will not stop laughing. FANDOM: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: none Author on LJ: st_crispinsAuthor Website: St. Crispin's Day SocietyWhy this must be read:This is a fast-paced, well-plotted gen story set in the early days of U.N.C.L.E. Napoleon and Illya form part of a crack team whose mission is to infiltrate a seemingly impregnable THRUSH stronghold and retrieve an agent who has been in deep cover for several years. But things are not quite as they appear... The story takes place in the French Pyrenees - in a France which has not forgotten the memories and scars of the Second World War - and the action never wavers. One of the strengths of C.W. Walker's writing is the way she evokes a sense of place - you'll feel as if you are really there while you are reading. There is also superb dialogue, a host of well-drawn original characters and a great Napoleon and Illya. ( Excerpt ) The Devil's Attic Affair

Fandom: NOIR Pairing: Mireille/Kirika Author on LJ: Unknown Author’s Website: FF.net profile Why this must be read:
This story strives to reflect the ending credits of Noir. It is pretty, and has the same sense of quiet intensity of the anime, though with a decidedly more peaceful mood. It’s a bit more poetic than I imagine either of these women, but nonetheless, I’d like to think that this is a possibility for Kirika and Mireille, after all they’ve been through.
Daylight pries at the corners of her eyelids, and she opens them slowly to golden softness. For just a moment, she is disoriented; her surroundings are not immediately familiar. Then she remembers where she is, and the realization brings a dizzying, pleasant feeling to replace her split-second panic.

Fandom: POP SLASH Pairing: Justin/JC Author on LJ: beth666ann and kaelieAuthor Website: Unaware (Beth) and The Ghetto (Kaelie)Why this must be read: This is the story that pulled fandom to a halt every week for a few months earlier this year (or at least my corner of the fandom.) If you haven't heard of this one I'll explain. This is a long story set over a 12 month period, it's relatively new it was only finished a few months ago. Basically Beth and Kaelie had finished writing the story before they began posting it. So they did final edits and begain posting the story weekly. And JuC fans everywhere (and a lot of non-JuC fans) were hooked. The story is an AU with wonderfully developed characters. Justin is a junior editor at an independent book publisher in New York and JC is a highly paid CEO. The world, the characters, the descriptions-the entire story is phenomenally detailed and dimensional. This is an amazing story. It's really well plotted and paced. The sex is hot and the drama is hotter. I think what gets people about this story is the emotional aspect of it, with characters as sympathetic and highly developed as this, it's impossible not to feel invested in the outcome of the story. Fandom: NOIR Pairing: None Author on LJ: Unknown Author’s Website: Independent Soul Why this must be read:
This story, beautiful and sad, looks at Mireille’s parents in the time leading up to their deaths. Though we saw very little of Odette and Laurent Bouquet in the series itself, their characterization here seems quite plausible, and their backstory intriguing. Nicely handled, too, is Altena’s philosophy, and what it means to those affected.

Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT Pairing: Dan/Casey Author on LJ: nifra_idrilAuthor Website: Neon NightsWhy this must be read:If you read SportsNight, you know the wonders of Sorkinesque banter. It's harder to do than it looks, but when it's done well, it's brilliant. My favorite pieces of SN fiction all have that quick back-and-forth, that wittiness, and this piece is no exception. It's written as if it were a SportsNight script, and perhaps the highest compliment I could pay it would be to say that if I didn't know better, I might think it were a lost episode of the show. ( It's absolutely hilarious. )Picture ThisAlso, apologies for the fact that it's a third of the way into the month and this is my first rec. In retrospect, I should have known that September (i.e. the month of "School's Beginning Again, Oh No!" and "I Have To Move All My Stuff Into A New Apartment?") wouldn't be a great time to drive the Crack Van. But never fear, I'll do my best to provide a good story ever few days from here on out! You can expect a fair bit of nuttiness, lots of humor, lots of Danny/Casey, and a lot of "theirloveissocanon!" So consider yourselves warned. ;)
