Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski Author on LJ: cherryiceAuthor Website: Cherry BombsWhy this must be read:I tend to like the happy due South stories, because a) I like feeling good after reading a story and b) there are so many happy dS stories. But the way Cherry handled this post-CotW breakup story was exactly the way I believe Ray and Fraser would break up, if things didn't work out. I've read stories that alluded to Ray not being able to deal with living up North or not being a cop, but this one seemed viscerally, palpably real, full of details that made me wince in empathy because I've been going through a divorce, and breakups are on my mind. Cherry made it hurt so good that I can't do more than wince. (Cherry doesn't assign her stories ratings; I gave this one an R for language.) Leaving Town

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairings: Vecchio/Stella Kowalski; Kowalski/Vecchio; Fraser/Kowalski, but I'd call this genslash Author on LJ: cherryiceAuthor Website: Cherry BombsWhy this must be read:I don't usually rec two stories by the same author in the same set of Crack Van recs, but I couldn't resist this time because I adore this Ray Kowalski-centric, post-CotW Chicago story. I love the intelligence shown by Ray, professional and emotional. The sense of having made it through rough times scarred but unbowed is powerful, and the wisdom that Ray shows was hard-earned. I also love the Stella/RayK friendship, the OFC who is Ray's new partner, the conflicted, hurting post-undercover Ray Vecchio, and the absence of Fraser that still affects RayK. The police case is just visible enough that it feels like an episode with personal scenes intermixed. (Cherry doesn't assign her stories ratings; I gave this one an R for violence, language, and adult situations.) Bury It with You

Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE Pairing: None Author on LJ: andrastewhiteAuthor Website: Altogether ElsewhereWhy this must be read:From The Common People archive (explanation of the project here on that site the the Explanation & Rules page), this is a spooky little story about a girl who notices odd things about a family in her neighborhood. I remembered this tale for a long time after I read it, but I couldn't remember the author or the title, so it took me a while to find it. It's a scene that could happen in a world with mutants hiding among normals, in mortal fear of discovery. This aspect of the X-Men verse strikes at that primal fear created by tales of aliens among us. I also got vibes reminiscent of The Twilight Zone. Peter

Fandom: Farscape Pairing: John/Aeryn Author on LJ: technosageAuthor website: Women of PassionWhy this must be read:This is a lovely view of what John was thinking of and feeling for Aeryn in the The Way We Weren’t, which is one of my all-time favorite episodes (and for which there are major spoilers). John is so very much in love with Aeryn Sun, and that love comes through in vivid technicolor here. I always enjoy seeing a beloved character through another’s eyes, and for that alone I would’ve enjoyed this fic, but the author has written John’s voice so well that you don’t even notice right away that this fic is all about Aeryn. Go. Read. And, as always, if you’re so moved, leave the author a little feedback. :) The World Disappears

Fandom: LOTRIPS Pairing: Orlando Bloom/Viggo Mortensen Author on LJ: angiepenAuthor Website: n/a Why this must be read:This is one of the few times I'm going to say I hope this isn't art mimicking life, except that I kinda hope it is. I hope they love each other this much, I hope they can rely on each other this much, but I damn well don't hope they're this close to despair. Despair, yeah, but then Angie makes it all better with humour and hope at the end -- I'll not spoil the joke for you, but the last line makes me cross my fingers. The writing is simple and realistic, and the whole thing eminently, terribly believable. Meddle Not

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: Sands/El Mariachi Author on LJ: copper_roseAuthor Website: not that I know of Why this must be read: A Sands introspective. This short piece is dusty with despair. "Until I will beg at the last. Please…just put a coin where my eyes used to be; I’ve already paid the toll and then some. Can’t you see that? Don’t you know? Someone must know, the world is full of assholes who know…" Sanctuary

Fandom: ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO Pairing: none Author on LJ: mojavedragonfly Author Website:Why this must be read: Yes, I'm reccing my own story. I can't see in the rules that it's forbidden, though it's clearly not the convention to do so, and I can see why. But as a small fandom, OUaTiM will go off the screen come November, so it's my job to get you all the good stuff I can this month, and I honestly think this story shouldn't be left off. I'm sure you'll consider the source in deciding what you want to read. Rather than toot my own horn too much, I'll quote someone else's review. You can find Rusalka's review here. She wrote a better review than I could, and probably a more honest one than I would. ( The first part of rusalka's review is comments on the fandom )Things go boom real good in Sons of Mexico. El Mariachi and Lorenzo take on yet another cartel and it all goes horribly, violently wrong. It's all Sands' fault, of course, but Sands is having problems of his own, and being blind and psychotic is the least of them. There are gunfights and explosions and big nasty villains, and I could totally see Robert Rodriguez filming it all in my head. And in the middle of all the boom, there's actually a really interesting characterization of Sands and the way he and El relate to each other. The writing is a bit clunky in places, and the villains are totally two-dimensional, but it's all part of the charm. Just relax and enjoy it.Sons of Mexico
