Hello, I'm hawkmoth, and I'll be taking the wheel this month for FIREFLY recommendations. My goal is to provide a mix of stories based on the series, from authors not previously recced; and a selection of more recent fic based on the movie SERENITY. First up: Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Annie M's Story ArchivesWhy this must be read: It's a crying shame that Annie M (known as TrekGirl in ST:VOYAGER fandom) wrote only one FIREFLY story. But it's a doozy. She takes the recurring theme of Serenity's crew in dire straits with limited job options, and gives it a kick with the introduction of some intriguing original characters. There's great character interaction, thrilling heroics, scary moments, and one hell of a twist to answer one of the series' mysteries (beating the movie to the punch by almost two years). Hi, I'm Betty, and I'm driving the Arrow-mobile this month for DCU. I read gen, het, and slash, and like well done characterization, good writing, and Robins. Fandom: DCU Pairing: Kon/...eventually Tim Author on LJ: thete1Author Website: TelandWhy this must be read:My first rec is is a fabulous introduction to the characters of Kon (Superboy) and Tim (Robin) as well as a good all round way to meet the fandom. Kon-El is the young Superboy who is always going to be compared to Superman. He has fans, and he's not above taking advantage of groupies. Hey, everyone's enjoying themselves, right? Tim is from Gotham's bat-clan. They all have issues. Tim's are unique in some ways, typical in others. This is the fic that sucked me into this fandom with an audible pop of displaced air. It's still the fic I go back to and reread when life sucks. It's sexy, and dysfunctional, and hopeful, all at once. Once you've read the fic, come back and check out the fanart, by _audrey. A Clarification of Range (BTW, Te has been under the weather for a while now. I know your feedback would be a lovely surprise for her.)

Hi. I'm Susan. I'll be reccing Enterprise this month. Most of my focus will be on the often under appreciated Hoshi Sato. I like humor, angst, and sometimes fluff. Fandom: Star Trek: Enterprise Pairing: Reed/Sato, Author on LJ: mnemosyne23 Author Website: Unknown Why this must be read: This is one of those rare fics that actually made me laugh out loud. Not smile, not grin, but laugh out loud. The author has a great sense of humor about the characters and the show. It's very much worth your time. Summary from the story: Reed gets drunk, Hoshi gets frustrated, T'Pol gets drooled upon, and someone gets killed. Just another day aboard Enterprise! Smashing Stone Tablets

Hello fellow junkies! I'm Gabby, and I'll be driving the Alias van for the month of November. I tend to like quirky stories, twisted stories, character-driven action, and the occasional dose of fine, distilled smut. I'm a fan of Sark, Will, Irina, Jack, and whoever else can be written brilliantly. So. Off we go. Fandom: ALIAS Pairing: Irina/Jack, Nadia/Vaughn, Nadia/Sark, Nadia/Weiss Author on LJ: permissionslipAuthor Website: none Why this must be read: The author's description is "Five things that never happened to The Passenger." These are five amazing, stark, powerful AU stories that made my head spin with the implications and the possibilities, and every one ends with lines that kick the breath right out of you. They touch on the circumstances of nearly every main character, twisting and altering the world in chilling, believable ways. The style, the language, the characterizations-- all beautiful. Greetings, I am sansenmage, driving the Star Wars Reccer for November. My mission is to rec stories that defy fanon conventions--well, or at least offer character insight. Enjoy the ride, but please buckle up for the jump to hypersapce. Fandom: STAR WARS OT Pairing: None Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: MJ Mink & Friends Fan Fiction PageWhy this must be read: To many, it may seem MJ Mink has written dozens of stories where Luke joins his father. That may be the case, but this older story utilizes Sith manipulation to the highest degree before, well, anyone knew much about the Sith. The set-up is another diplomatic trap mission where Luke is forced to chose the fate of his friends. This may seem conventional, but add complications of assassanation plots and mistaken lovers; then the dynamics are superb! ( Excerpt )Necessary Lies

Crack really is addictive; having just finished a month of reccing LOTRIPS, I'm now dealing on another corner, that of Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. The one thing you probably won't see much for November is James Norrington/Jack Sparrow; there are others who are much more qualified to rec that than I. Anything else is fair game, especially polyfic and gen. Fandom: PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL Pairing: Gen: Jack Sparrow, Bill Turner Author on LJ: elspethdixonAuthor Website: Elspeth's IndexWhy this must be read:There's not enough good Bootstrap fic in this fandom. It's one of our only flaws, that Bootstrap Bill Turner doesn't get enough love, but then, I suppose, you don't really need more fic when you've got this. I'm very much in favour of historical realism -- shut up, yes, I know, zombie pirates -- and Elspeth is wonderfully talented at it, what with the "disgusting tropical diseases" here. Contagion

Hey, this is hermitsoul and I am reccing for The Sentinel this month. There are so many great stories in this fandom that I am having a hard time choosing only twelve! Fandom: Sentinel Pairing: Jim/Blair Author on LJ: moonbeamsfanfic Author Website: Moonbeam's Fanfiction PredilectionsWhy this must be read:
Because it isn't just another average week in the Ellison-Sandburg household, and yet it is. Great first time story that keeps the guys as guys while they realize what everyone else already knows. "It means, Jim," Blair said in his best 'professor-explaining-simple-concepts-to-dumb-students' voice. "That based on the rules of our society today, we should be having sex. We exhibit all the behaviors of life-mated male pairs, and to the modern person's mind, that means we must be lovers. Because they can't know that we really aren't having sex, can they? They can only infer an assumption based upon all the available data. And all the available data points to us boinkin' each other like rabbits."

Fandom: X-Men Movieverse Pairing: Logan/Rogue, Scott/Jean Author on LJ: Don’t know Author Website: Below the MoonWhy this must be read:“la bas” is one of the “fan classics” of the X-verse. I’m amazed it hasn’t been recommended here before now. The Mutant Registration Act has become law in the United States. Scott, his wife Jean, their infant son, and Rogue live in a mutant relocation camp ruled by David Koresh types. Life is especially harsh for Scott, hated by the other mutants as the failed leader of the X-Men. But how did Rogue come to be Scott’s concubine? Where is Logan? Something dreadful has happened between Logan and Rogue. The author slowly and cleverly reveals the backstory. The novel is about Logan and Rogue finding their way back to each other, and about the marriage of Scott and Jean surviving under hellish conditions. It’s about Scott, a psychologically paralyzed man, rediscovering his courage and agreeing to make a run for the Mexican border. But most of all, it’s a story about friendship. This is a good Logan/Rogue love story, but it is an outstanding Scott-Rogue friendship story. The author depicts a horrific place and way of life in a manner that is mesmerizing, poetic. The ending is powerful. This story will stick in your mind long after you’ve read it. You thought of Scott as many things -- teacher, friend, brother -- but never as this… The other men hate him, fear him, envy him. They look at Jean and you as trophies, living proof of Scott's manhood and prowess. It's not really like that. This is the truth --la bas

Fandom: LOTRIPS Pairings: Billy, Dom, Elijah, David Wenham (various combinations) Author on LJ: airgiodslvAuthor Website: RedefinitionWhy this must be read: This is a brilliant and claustrophobic science fiction AU in which a scientist, an engineer, and a federal representative (Bill, Dom and Dave) are conducting a pre-colonisation investigation of an apparently uninhabited planet when the monotony of their mission is broken by the discovery of a puzzle in a cave. The mystery of Elijah is echoed from the point of view of pragmatic Dave, restless Dom and finally an anxious, angry Bill, and the same story is different, hotter and more enigmatic with each retelling. A long and rivetting read, with a fantastic look at an established Dom/Billy relationship and how it is affected when Elijah is drawn in. ( excerpt )Futures Possible

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Fraser/RayK Author on LJ: aukestrelAuthor Website: None currently available Why this must be read: These stories are pure smut, but they're perfect, in-character, HOT, HOT, HOT smut. A wonderful first-person Ray voice that somehow captures the cadence and energy of RayK on the show. The author gives us humor and sex and a very real, highly charged peek into the relationship between Fraser and RayK. ( EXPLICIT excerpt )Oh, yeah. For me, this is pretty close to perfect! I'm viciouswishes, your AtS driver for November. I read a bit of everything - pairings, ratings, and genres. Fandom: ANGEL Pairing: Gunn/Wesley Author on LJ: helenravenAuthor Website: Wasting Time the Helen Raven WayWhy this must be read: It's one of the best stories written in the Birthday 'verse and one of my all-time favorite fics. (The Birthday verse is the series alternative canon where Cordelia becomes a famous actress and Angel suffers from visions.) The fic documents the full relationship of Gunn and Wesley from the moment they meet. The author fully develops and explores issues surrounding sexuality, race, disabilities, working in a supernatural world, and taking care of a crazy Angel. Don't let the novel length put you off, it's well worth the read. Kungai

Hello! I'm chickpea, and I'll be your popslash van driver for the month. I started reading popslash way back in 1999 or 2000... don't remember. I've sort of tapered off now, so most of my recs will be old school(/skool) fics of the *NSYNC persuasion, with some newer fics and crossovers thrown in the mix (or, *N the Mix! Aahahaha... sorry). I also have a deep fondness for Joey, so you'll see him quite a bit in my recs. Hope you enjoy the ride. [revs engine] Fandom: POPSLASH Pairing: Joey/JC (implied) Author on LJ: dayseAuthor Website: MoJoeWhy this must be read: This story is alternately creepy and sweet, and the ending manages to let you feel both at the same time. Joey is unreachable, and JC has the hardest time dealing with this. The story is told in snatches, through emails and phone messages, and the time lapses in the story build suspense until the denouement. JC's slow descent is heartbreaking to feel. Most of all, Joey and JC end up together, except it's sad and creepy, too. ( little baby excerpt )The Sound of Your Voice
