Fandom: VORKOSIGAN UNIVERSE Pairing: None (canon implied) Author on LJ: verstehenAuthor Website: Koanju.comWhy this must be read:This ficlet appeals because of the playfulness, which the canon Vorkosigan 'verse has, along with the angsty drama. And I liked the coziness of the piece. "Your Holiness--!"

Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: John/Chiana Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: unknown. Archived at Terra Firma Why this must be read: This story is one of the few John/Chiana pairings that focuses on John's remorse for his treatment of Chiana after Taking The Stone. It is a story of rape and John's compassion for Chiana's motivations and actions and his total unacceptance of Chiana's lack of self-worth. The text is slightly rough around the edges but the passion, understanding of how wounded Chiana is inside as well as her genuinely good heart; shines through. I accept its slight flaws for its wonderful evocation of something that could have happened in Season 2. Amendments

Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: John/Chiana Author on LJ: Author Website: Musings Of A Caffeinated Cynic, The Grey DawnWhy this must be read:
Layton Colt writes the richest, most wrenching fiction that explores the friendship of John and Chiana. She explores their kindred spirits and mines the emotional depths of their wounds and follies. This story takes place directly after What Was Lost, Part 2. Chiana and John are the only ones who can talk about John's rape and possibly come to some sort of closure together, or not. Fandom: HORATIO HORNBLOWER Pairing: Edward Pellew/Horatio Hornblower, Edward Pellew/male Author on LJ: nautacarus Warnings: Dubious consent. Author Website: N/A Why this must be read: Sharp, brilliantly executed, and hot in all those terribly wrong and yet oh-so-right ways. nautacarus begins a farly light -- and absolutely dead-on -- tone that will amuse if you're even vaguely familiar with period writing, but the author wasn't kidding when she gave this its title. Consequences rarely get this kind of unflinching treatment. The Decline and Fall of Sir Edward Pellew

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: joyfulgirl41Author Website: our love is so rightWhy this must be read: This story is just so beautiful and so sad. Sam learns to appreciate Dean just a little too late, but nothing can change the fact that they're a team. Go read and give the author some love: Just a Little Lullaby

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: None Author on LJ: ilanabean42Author Website: Her BSG fics in LJ MemoriesWhy this must be read: Here's another story that was written for the Common People challenge, and it provides superb insight into why people would want to follow Tom Zarek, and whether that allegiance is blind or riddled with doubt. It's also equal parts disturbing and hypnotic as you get a glimpse of what life may be like for a prisoner at the end of the world. ( snippet )Follow the Leader

Like so many fangirls, I love to see my favourite characters hurt, hurt, and hurt again. Oh yeah, and comforted. Yep, this week’s theme is h/c, but not just any old shoot ‘em up and tuck ‘em in bed fics, but ones that stood out to me as deliciously different.Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Author on LJ: unknown Author Website: Me & Thee WebsiteWhy this must be read: Because Verlaine actually made me -- a cynical, tight jean-obsessed, torture-loving fangirl -- enjoy a h/c fic that was sweet, angst-free and, even scarier, not set in the 1970s. I’ve never been an ‘old guys’ stories fan, but I savoured this voyeuristic peak into the lives of older and little bit wiser Starsky and Hutch. Not only did “Gadgets” make me go “awwww” without gagging afterwards, Verlaine convinced me that a character’s hurts can be wonderfully comforted without soul-tormenting angst. Gadgets

And now from angst-free to super-angst, from a new master of Starsky & Hutch hurt/comfort. . .Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: Starsky/Hutch Author on LJ: sjames_centreAuthor Website: Sjames_centre's Journal Why this must be read: In “One for Sorrow, Two for Joy” the hurt is multi-layered, as Susan interweaves the case of a missing child with Hutch’s troubled past. As their frustration with the lack of evidence builds, Hutch’s grasp on reality begins to disintegrate, and Starsky must struggle to understand and comfort his old friend but new lover. Susan brings a fresh perspective on well-visited themes in this fandom, creating a vivid, moving story in which pain defies easy resolution and love isn’t always enough. And from super-angst, we now go to fun-angst, if there is such a thing. Hurting them is fun, after all. . . Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Author on LJ: myrebelcatAuthor Website: Starsky & Hutch FanficWhy this must be read: I love Post-Sweet Revenge h/c, but “Queen’s Gambit” stands out because of Rebelcat’s deft use of loving humour between the guys. Recovering from his bullet wounds during a heat-wave, Starsky is hurting and Hutch’s air conditioner is broken. So, to comfort his wounded friend, Hutch suggests chess. Chess? With an extra rule and some fun twists, Starsky, Hutch and Huggy Bear all meet their match in this delightful hurt/comfort chess game. Queen's GambitP.S. Rebelcat made my groovy h/c icons too. She's a multi-talented chick.

Fandom: THE WEST WING Characters: Ensemble Author on LJ: not known Author Website: Marguerite's Gray AreaWhy this must be read:I was rummaging through loads of fic trying to think of what to recommend next - when I started to think about which authors I enjoyed reading and which ones I hadn't mentioned yet... when I remembered Marguerite. Hers was among some of the first West Wing Fanfic I ever read, so naturally it stands out for that reason - but it stands out for other reasons as well. The story I've chosen, after much deliberation (because it's all so good!) is one set right at the end of Season 2, as a post-ep to "18th & Potomac", the episode in which Mrs Landingham is killed in a car accident. So it's angsty, but amongst the sadness is humour - the way the show used to be - bringing the funny in the unlikliest of places, yet it still seems to fit. This is "the gang" of old - the extended family they used to be, if you like. The characterisation and dialogue are perfect, and the scene with the cookies is ... well, just pass the Kleenex!
