Fandom: HIGHLANDER Pairings: Duncan/Methos (a touch of Methos/Amanda) Author on LJ: not that I know of Author Website: http://members.tripod.com/~MaxineMayer/index.htmWhy this must be read:In all the years I've been a Highlander fan, I think it's possible that I've reread this story more than any other. The pacing of it is irresistible, and the dialogue sparkles. Maxine's style is unique, as is her view of the characters, but she has wonderful insight into the questions and dilemmas of immortality. The exchange at the end of this story between Duncan and Methos illuminates so much about both characters -- particularly Duncan -- in a few lines of dialogue, that it's become my touchstone in understanding his character and what drives him. Maxine also creates a world in which Immortals can and do have families, with all the love, laughter, and heartache that comes with them. And since I recced a Gathering story yesterday, I thought Maxine's enticing view of enduring Immortal connections might provide a bit of an antidote. KissesThis story is part of the "Future Alternative Universe" series. Please let the author know if you enjoy it.

Fandom: FARSCAPE Pairing: None Author on LJ: kixxaAuthor Website: kixxaficsWhy this must be read: In this alternate version of season 4 -- I believe it was written when the season was still on the air -- Stark has been captured by an evil priestess who is slowly killing him in order to drain his energy for her own ends. He manages to get a not-very-subtle psychic message to Crichton, which manifests in his dreams, and Crichton organizes himself, D'Argo, and Scorpius into a rescue party to go and find him. On a planet that's positively swarming with Peacekeepers. The result is a story with a little bit of everything: action, angst, humor, plot twists, snark, well-developed original characters, patented Crichtonesque craziness, beautifully layered emotional writing, and an unforgettable scene in which D'Argo, Crichton and Scorpius check into a hotel room together, much to the clerk's bemusement. Fandom: SMALLVILLE Pairing: Clark/Lex Author on LJ: emelerinAuthor Website: Fic at the Archive at the End of the UniverseWhy this must be read: It's hard to pull off a fic that is mostly internal, where the dialogue falls neatly between dense paragraphs of thought, but this is one of the best. Lex finds Clark in his wine cellar--"the lowest point in Smallville," Clark says--and that really is the metaphor for their relationship. They're no longer friends, and yet there's so much between them, including a desire to set things right. Clark is drinking and reckless and afraid, and he's tired of all of the things that have made him feel trapped by who he is. He needs something that only Lex can give him because Lex understands being afraid of who he is. (And if that's not enough to sell you on the story, there's hot sex in the wine cellar. *G*) ( Why are you in my wine cellar, Clark? ) Read the story: Before the Songs Were Made, and let the author know what you think.

Jane Terry has a knack for tumbling Napoleon and Illya into bed through scenarios that, at first glance, appear utterly implausible, but the longer you read, become completely believable. “Z-48” is just such a story, and since I seem to be stuck on “for the sake of the mission, we must have sex” stories right now, here's the ultimate example. Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. Pairing: Napoleon Solo/Illya Kuryakin; Napoleon Solo/OMCs Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Lyrebird MoundWhy this must be read:For a man like Napoleon Solo who’s no stranger to using seduction in order to get information and do his job, a "honey pot" operation shouldn’t be a problem to undertake. However, when the assignment he’s drawn involves a man, and Napoleon’s never had a same-sex experience, the only way he can assume his undercover role without exposing himself as an agent is to learn how to have sex with a man. Where Illya comes in…well, you’ll just have to read to find out. ( “A )Z-48
