Fandom: Firefly Pairing: none Author on LJ: mousapelliAuthor's Website: The Rat Box Why this must be read:Mal and the crew take on interesting new cargo, and it's hilarious. No, really, that's it. There was so much serious, heartbreaking fic after the movie, and this is the perfect antidote. It's light, and completely cracked out, but everyone's still in character. And it's hilarious, really. An excerpt: "It's an arctic planet." Mal wondered about the workings of a universe that would manage things so as to have a Captain on his own ship explaining his actions to a penguin in the co-pilot's seat. "So you should be right at home. Find a nice girl penguin and have lots of little Freds…you are a boy, Fred, ain't you?"
Fred blinked.
"Well regardless, they'll be lots of penguins to choose from, boys and girls, pick your fancy, ain't nothing wrong with…"
"Sir, are you telling the penguin he needs to get laid?" Stowaway by mousapelli*** If you enjoyed this story, please let the author know.

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully UST Author on LJ: revelyAuthor Website: Revely FicWhy this must be read: This is one of my favorite XF stories. It's sweet and dreamy, but also sharp, funny and unique. Like an earlier rec, "Banging Your Head On a Red-Haired Brick Wall," and a rec that will be named later, it features one of the most memorable original characters in XF fic. Jonah is a little boy lost, who may also be something else -- possibly something magical. There are so many other wonderful things about this story, too: the wise beyond his years voice of Andy, Jonah's friend and protector, the vivid portrait of small town history and interactions, and the way all these elements work their charm on Mulder and Scully. ( If you came from a world of salt, then sugar would be like a gift from heaven. )The Dreaming Sea by Revely

Fandom: LABYRINTH Pairing: Jareth/Toby Author on LJ: silveraspenAuthor Website: unknown Why this must be read:There is one line of the film where Jareth is talking about Toby's eyes being so much like his. It's always stuck with me, made me wonder what Toby's lasting connections to the labyrinth and to Jareth might be. A babe who has spent nearly thirteen hours in the center of the goblin realm cannot simply emerge from his rescue unscathed, unchanged... and apparently I am not the only one who thinks about these things. And yes, this story is slash, a rare genre in Labyrinth fandom. He'd been having the dream for as long as he could remember, and it never really changed. There was always a sense of spinning around, held tight in someone's arms, someone with eyes that looked like his. He could recall a deep voice, sometimes singing, sometimes silken with malice and speaking to someone that he couldn't quite see. There were images, confused and blurry, of things with too many legs, unending stairs, magic lights, and bouncing crystal balls - things that couldn't possibly be true. Occasionally Sarah was in the dream, too, but the one time he'd tried to ask her about it, she'd turned pale and told him that magical worlds didn't exist, even in dreams, so how could she have been in one? She'd seemed so afraid that he'd never asked her again.Goblin Dreams

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN ~ Old West Pairing: Gen. Author on LJ: N/A Author Website: Lady Angel's M7 LibraryWhy this must be read:Vin tracks Lon Porter into a stretch of land known as the badlands for its desert heat and its treacherous terrain of hardened lava. He finds Porter, dead at the bottom of a deep hole when Porter and his horse broke through the brittle surface. The ground crumbles under Vin’s feet and while he hits the bottom with only scrapes he begins a long ordeal for his life and sanity. The days pass with both heat and rain and the slowly decomposing body of Porter that becomes animated as Vin struggles with memories of his mothers death. When Vin is finally found he is a shell of his former self who has only fractured memories of what he survived with no way of telling anyone why he lives in fear or why he cannot move on from it. His time in the hole is described in nightmarish detail so that it’s very believable that someone as strong willed as Vin would fall victim to it. There’s a strong emphasize on Chris and Vin’s friendship but all of the Seven are featured and utilized wisely. Their sense of confusion and helplessness at being unable to restore Vin is palpable and heartrending as is the obvious connection they feel to him and his pain. The River Styx

Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: Sam/Daniel Author on LJ: shutthef_upAuthor's Website: Why this must be read: This is a fic which has Sam and Daniel in Atlantis together. It's richly detailed and the characterization is spot on. Although, this isn't an episode tag for The Pegasus Project, it provides us with a glimpse of what it would be like with them together on Atlantis. It not only shows us the sexual side of their relationship, but it also shows how deeply their underlying friendship is. And that friendship is rarely portrayed on screen anymore so finding it in this fic is wonderful. Lost Time

Fandom: LABYRINTH Pairing: none Author on LJ: unknown (used to be sanguinerose) Author Website: http://www.angelfire.com/art2/faeillusion/Why this must be read:Alert: Darkfic. Dark dark dark. If you're prone to hopelessness, depression or cutting, give this one a pass and go read something else, please. Even though there are times when my own shadows try to close in, when I absolutely cannot read this story myself, I adore the descriptions of the city in this story. I can't not rec it. This one is a lyrical horror, a treatment of the darkest fears of imaginative children, grown to adulthood in a patiently hostile workaday world. The vendors nod over their wares, remembering a time when they were welcome in the brightly lit streets, and the trendy cafes, and the cheaply-expensive apartments. Before the shadows swallowed them, and the visions of greatness died.Shadowsalternate site

Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: Jack/Daniel Author on LJ: icarusancalionAuthor's Website: Icarus.Slash.FictionWhy this must be read: I love fic that have to do with flying. However, some of them aren't very accurate, so as a soon to be mechanic it kind of ruins the story for me. But in Sonic Boom, Icarus not only manages to portray the actual flying properly, but the fic is filled with the emotion that flying brings. In this fic, Jack takes Daniel for a ride in a F-15E. It's short but it's so good. Sonic Boom

Fandom: LABYRINTH Pairing: Sarah/Jareth Author on LJ: dialinghellAuthor Website: http://www.geocities.com/keimain/ and http://www.fanfiction.net/u/128698/Why this must be read:I can't resist this one. Bits of it get me chuckling out loud, every time. Sarah has matured into a snarky actress, unlucky in love but accurate with a frying pan. "It's going to be great Sarah... I mean, I know you're not real big on fantasy films but the script is great. Originally it's a book but once the writers add a few Hollywood tweaks it'll be an instant box office smash... There's these goblins and this King and this girl, that's you of course..."
Oh my God, fate, destiny, chance, cannot be this cruel to me, can they? I mean, is that really fair, ganging up three against one?
"It's called the Labyrinth..."
Apparently fate, destiny, and chance can beat the crap out of the puny mortals and no one gives a damn. Hip hip hooray for bullies. Maybe if I give them my lunch money they'll leave me alone.
"And Sarah, before you even begin to say no, let me remind you that your contract with Cliched Films binds you to one more film and they're adamant, this is it."Lights, Camera, Action!

Fandom: STARGATE SG1 Pairing: Gen Author on LJ: moonshaydeAuthor's Website: Scribal TraditionsWhy this must be read: This is easily one of my favorite gen fics. It has just about everyone in it from the main characters to brief appearences by characters that we've only seen once or twice. But, it works out in this story perfectly. You don't feel overloaded with all of the characters and the situation in which all of them are in seems plausible. There is also the return of a fairly important character. This is an AU of some season 9 events. There's a group that is trying to gain knowledge of the SGC's activities by going after people that have relations by going after people that have connections with SG1. But, throughout the story they also deal with the IOC and the Ori. It is a novel-length fic, and the plots are enough to make you want to read it in one sitting. There is a ship version of this fic, however I wouldn't read it until you read the gen version. Just the pairing alone would give away a big reveal of the fic. A Priori

Fandom: Highlander Pairing: N/A Author on LJ: unovis_ljAuthor Website: Stories by UnovisWhy this story must be read: There are some authors who you just know will intrigue you, amaze you, delight your senses or grab your emotions, or all of the above. unovis_lj is one of those authors and we are so lucky she writes Highlander stories. This short, enigmatic story captures so much of what is at the core of why Highlander endures so long after it was cancelled. It's not just about sexy, powerful, attractive men bonding across the centuries, although that's part of it. There is mystery, there is an inherent tragedy, there are fascinating characters who have lived rich and voluminous lives. And they are complicated - their motives, their history, their emotional needs and desires. All that is captured here in only a few intensely descriptive paragraphs. A Winter Night

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003 Pairing: Helo/Racetrack, Lee/Dee (implied), Sharon/Helo (implied) Author on LJ: poisontasterAuthor Website: as above Why this must be read: Sometimes characters are pretty together and fans just ship the shiny. Not here -- Helo & Racetrack might not be one of the "canon" ships of the fandom but darned if poisontaster hasn't taken the reader on a plausible path through the last episodes of S2 to challenge your expectations and leave you wondering if maybe this is what really happened after all. There's a lovely grounding to the story that jumps back and forth through time, grappling with the grim realities of it all yet rising with a hopefulness and grit that reflect the essential qualities of the central characters. Fandom: STAR WARS PT Pairing: Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon Author on LJ: randomaliaAuthor's Wesite: Memories SectionWhy this must be read:While Obi-Wan is a padawan he learns much from Qui-Gon's instruction, but he learns much more through observations to form his understanding of Jedi. Here are the glimpses of serenity that Anakin admires later. Here are also the markings of Obi-Wan's unorthodox growth that are so intrinsic to his particular lineage. At that age, whatever it was, he had thought that if he kept going and trying, his body would finally understand how to move and he wouldn't ever stumble again. It was a place he thought he would arrive at; he simply had to keep walking until he got there. Footprints Like My Own by randomalia

Fandom: STAR WARS PT Pairing: Anakin/Obi-Wan Author on LJ: imadra_blueAuthor's Wesite: Skyehawk and The Archive at the End of the WorldWhy this must be read: The writer walks on tricky ground using themes and vignettes to craft a believable relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Their dynamic changes in each vignette as a menacing undertone -in both men- resounds again and again. Stylistic and smart, the experimental nature succeeds magnificently in revisiting the bad and the good of their lifelong partnership. The "Applied Sciences" Series by imadra_blue
