02:40 am The Trainer by Linda Cornett (PG)
And with beginnings, comes endings. . . or is it vice versa? It's another ball-park rating, anyway.

Fandom: MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: none

Author Website: Observations

Why this must be read:

Because this is the best deathfic I have read in this fandom (and many others). No, don't run away! I avoided this story for a long time because of its 'take no prisoners' opening line: "My partner is dead."

Once I overcame my squeamishness, I regretted every minute I'd delayed reading it. Linda does far more than superbly encapsulate the mental, physical and emotional shock of grief. She also reveals the human side of an often inhuman profession, and demonstrates how the end of one partnership can become the beginning of another.

Trust me, and pull the bandage off quickly. It's worth it.

10:28 am A Whiff of Sulpher by Dira Sudis (PG)
Fandom: DEAD ZONE
Pairing: Potential Johnny/Walt
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: Words Words Words
Why this must be read:

This ficlet packs a delicious punch, as cigarettes become the metaphor for the ever-blurring line between Johnny and the people he touches.

He was a biology teacher, for God's sake, he showed that blackened lung to hundreds of kids before he became a car accident statistic--but now every time he smells a lit match, he gets the craving, remembers the way it felt, the way a cigarette fit between his fingers, between his lips, the sweet (foul) taste of smoke, the (choking) way it filled his lungs.

10:53 am Family Portrait by Dira Sudis (R)
Fandom: DEAD ZONE
Pairing: Johnny/Sarah/Walt
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] dsudis
Author Website: Words Words Words
Why this must be read:

Dira does great Dead Zone. Her stories always tie together fascinating aspects of Johnny's abilities, his connections to the people in his life, and the mixture of horror and humor the show is known for. Here, tiny particles of watercolor paint assault Johnny with repeats of the same, seemingly innocuous vision, until the pieces come together to reveal the unthinkable.

07:17 pm To Carthage Then I Came, by Annakovsky (R)
Fandom: X-Files
Pairing: Mulder/Samantha
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky
Author Website: the speed of glaciers, maybe

Why this must be read:
This story is unlike the others I've recced so far this month, in that it's not MSR and it's not intended to be that funny. What it is though, is awesome. It's one of the most interesting portrayals of Mulder that I've ever read, and a great AU take on life after the end of the series. The fic directly addresses the fact that finding Samantha was Mulder's central obsession for most of his life, and it's a brilliant look at how that could have played out. Even if the pairing turns you off I highly recommend that you check this out.

Excerpt:
In Phoenix they find another live Samantha, eight years old. He wonders if she likes Stratego, and the guilt hits him so strong it takes a second to catch his breath. The assassins get there at nearly the exact time he does, and Mulder has to kill a man before he gets her away. It's not hard. By the time they get back to Samantha 1, whom he'd left with the old woman across the hall, Samantha 2 - Lily, he tells himself, her name is Lily - has absorbed the facts. He tells her more of the truth, but not all of it - they will pretend he is her dad, so they can hide from the bad men. When they get back to the hotel room, Mulder carefully wipes the blood spatters from Samantha 2's face before they pick up Samantha 1.

07:35 pm Boys Don't Cry (except when they do) by lordessrenegade (PG-13)
Fandom: SPORTS NIGHT
Pairing: Casey/Dan
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade
Author Website: cosmic debris

Why this must be read: It's subtitled Five Times Dan Rydell Doesn't Cry, and doesn't that say it all? On the surface Dan appears to be bright, sharp, witty, clever, capable, strong and loving and, in fact, he is all of those things. But there's something inside of him that's broken, something that he's spent all his life hiding, and any time his mask slips our hearts go out to him. These five drabbles centre around Dan's brother, his father, Casey McCall, his boss, and an ending, and fans of the show will need no further explanation. And fans of [livejournal.com profile] lordessrenegade's writing will need no better reason.

"I'll be on Friday, at six," he said instead, and knew that his father wouldn't watch.

08:53 pm What Are You Doing New Year's Eve? by Druis (NC-17)
Fandom: TORCHWOOD
Pairing: Jack Harkness/Ianto Jones/Toshiko Sato
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] druis
Author Website: None that I know of
Why this must be read:

Because it's hot like burning. ::fans self:: Seriously, this is one of the hottest things I've read and the dialogue is great fun. A lovely lovely version of the characters. And honestly, considering what we've seen on the show, it seems rather plausible... (Oh, it's actually the sequel to the Jack/Ianto fic Blame it on the Mistletoe, which I also recommend.)
