12:06 am Generation X Presents: A Short (and somewhat inaccurate) History of the X-Men by Jaelle (PG)
Hi all! I'm [livejournal.com profile] dytabytes, although off LJ, most like to refer to me as Toast. Go figure. Anyhoo, I'll be driving your X-Men can for July! I've tried burying my way through reams of old fic in the dark pits of the Internet, so hopefully you'll either be seeing things that remind you of the 'good old days' or you'll find fic that you wouldn't have ever come across otherwise.

Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE
Pairing: None, although some canon pairings are mentioned
Author Website: Insane Musings
Why this must be read:

As the title implies, in this fic, the Generation X team acts out the history of the X-Men using a whole bunch of artistic license and the snappy commentary a la Jubilee. When you're part of a fandom whose roots literally go back through decades of history, the details of the 'Early Years' can become a confusing mangle. Heck, this fic was written way back when Onslaught was still fresh (around a decade ago?) and it still spans 12 chapters-worth of material.

That said, Jaelle did an admirable job in keeping things relatively true to history but funny at the same time. Sometimes the writing is a little rough, but mostly, the parody style of the fic lends itself to its subject matter producing, in my opinion, an amusing and worth-while read.

07:51 am Dark is a Way and Light is a Place by JS Cavalcante (NC-17)
I'm back, this time driving the Due South van!  Most of the epic stories in this fandom have already been recced, so I'll be focusing on offering shorter (but still significant) stories from a few authors who haven't been seen here before.  Enjoy!

Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Author on LJ: j-s-cavalcante
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

Set after Asylum, this fic offers up an intriguing backstory between Volpe and Ray. JS Cavalcante's work always has a literary tone to it and it is especially apparent here, as she (he?) plays with the concepts of dark (Volpe) and light (Fraser) and how Ray learns to interact with each of them. The characterization of Ray is also very good and the way he and Fraser hook up is wonderfully plausible. A thoughful, realistic story.

07:53 am Straightness by JS Cavalcante (NC-17)
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser/Kowalski
Author on LJ: [personal profile] j_s_cavalcante
Author Website: n/a
Why this must be read:

I'm a sucker for stories in which Ray has a tough time coming to terms with being attracted to Fraser, and this particuar fic has an added bonus of one of the best first lines I've ever read, period:

Fraser gives it to Ray a half-inch at a time, so slowly that Ray's maybe going to die of waiting.

*Guh.* (The fact that the first line is immediately followed by a scorchingly hot sex scene doesn't hurt either.)

From there, we find out how Fraser and Ray ended up in bed together and *then* they manage to have the 'are you actually gay?' talk. Heh. It's wonderfully messed up and totally Due South.

04:18 pm Reach by Khyber (R)
Hi, I'm Memento64, and I'm privileged to be driving for X-Files this month. I have been a Mulder/Scully shipper since I first saw that closet scene in "Ice" (the one with the mutual neck inspections). I was only 14, but I was instantly hooked. XF was my first fandom, and although many other fandoms have come and gone since the first days of my infatuation, I think I will always return to this universe from time to time. After all, it was my first love.

Most of my recs will reflect my shipping preference, but I will also throw in a few UST fics and non-romance stories.

Fandom: X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Scully
Author on LJ: Not that I know of
Author Website: khyberfic.net
Why this must be read: This story is simply breathtaking--the language, the pacing, the relationship--everything works together to craft a fic that is lyrical and unforgettable. I was actually surprised to see that no one had already rec'd this; I've had a copy on my hard drive for years, and I've read it more times than I can accurately recall. Although Khyber claims he would revise this now, if given the chance, I truly believe that this story belongs on the list of all time classic XF fics.
