10:33 am Live and Die This Way by goldtamera (PG)
Hello! I'll be your friendly neighborhood Supernatural crack-dealer for July. I'm a fan of both gen and Wincest, so I'm going to try and give you a good mix -- the hard part will be picking only 12 stories.

Fandom: SUPERNATURAL
Pairing: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] goldtamera
Author website: n/a

Why this must be read:
In a fandom this talented, and with so many genres and angles to choose from, it's hard to know where best to start off. So I'm going to be a bit literal and start pre-series, with the show's third star: the Metallicar.

The Impala's not just a car, she's a part of the Winchester family -- this fic not only captures Dean's very tangible connection with the car, but also provides a fleshed-out slice of the Winchester's lives in a relatively short space. The full mix of closeness and growing strain between John, Dean, and Sam, the atmosphere of a small desert town, plus the terror and adrenaline of a hunt are all skillfully wound together -- with the Impala at the center.

And how do you not love an opening line like this? Dean is seventeen, bleeding, and running for his life the first time he falls in love.

11:03 am 'Forget' by Alchemistic (PG)
Ahoy, maties! I'll be driving the van for Pirates of the Caribbean for the month of July.

Fandom: Pirates of the Caribbean
Title: Forget
Characters: Jack Sparrow/Elizabeth Swann
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alchemistic
Author Website: LJ Profile Page
Why this must be read: Because the author was apparently somehow channeling Jack Sparrow while she wrote this. These are Jack's thoughts during the scene in the opening of Dead Man's Chest, where he's sitting at the big table in his cabin, trying to plot the ship's course, and his compass isn't working. It's completely, fantastically entertaining, and heartbreaking at the same time.

Go. Read. You won't regret it.

11:26 am And Everything After by Zoicite (PG-13)
Hi! I'm Mette, and I'll be driving the popslash van this month. I've been reading and writing popslash for quite a few years now and I doubt it's a fandom I'll ever get tired of. We have lava lamps! And people turning into couches! You'd think that would be weird, but really, it's some of the most fabulous entertainment around. :)

Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Howie/Brian, GSF
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] zoicite
Author Website: Commoner's Tales

Why this must be read: Zoicite gets mentioned a lot around here, and rightly so. She has a knack for making all five guys an important part of the story, which is never an easy thing to do when you're dealing with that many characters. I've especially fallen completely in love with her take on Howie, who is the biggest sweetheart on the planet and never has a clue. This story is no exception and it's just an absolute gem. The humorous yet completely loving take on how Howie falls for everyone of the guys is done so well. There's so much going on in this story, yet it never becomes cluttered or difficult to follow. A wonderful and incredibly fulfilling read.

03:16 pm The Prophet's Healer by koalathebear (G)
Hi, everyone! *waves*

I’m [livejournal.com profile] sabaceanbabe and I’ll be your driver this month for BSG 2003. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not all about Helo all the time, thus I’ll be reccing fics with lots of different characters and pairings and themes. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did and still do. :)

Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA 2003
Pairing: none (gen)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] koalathebear
Author Website: koala’s fic on GJ
Why this must be read:

This piece is fairly short at just over 600 words, but, like the TARDIS (yes, I know, wrong fandom), it’s bigger on the inside than the outside seems to indicate. Doc Cottle is a stereotypical crusty curmudgeon, except that he’s not. We haven’t yet been privileged to see the world from his eyes so much in canon, but in this fic, we not only see the world from his eyes, but we get to feel it from his heart. The good doctor has a jaded point of view and a prickly-at-best bedside manner, but he knows how to heal. When Laura Roslin comes to him for help, though, there’s really nothing he can do. His science fails him, as so many things have in his life. Spoilers for season 2’s Flight of the Phoenix.

04:45 pm From the Burn Bag at Bethesda by Two Weevils (PG-13)
Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Gibbs/Di Nozzo preslash
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] twoweevils
Author Website: Two Weevils @ MTAC
Why this must be read:

The epsiode 'SWAK' might not have the best plot in the world (Tony catches Y Pestis aka the bubonic plague and... just watch it 'kay?) but oy, the character interactions in this episode are just.... wonderful. Everyone is at the top of their game in this episode, espeically when it comes to essaying the emotions that bind this bunch of unlikely souls together. From Kate's 'white lie', Abby worrying up a storm, Ducky's vigil to Gibb's order to Tony not to die... Which leads me to this beautiful little peice written for the [livejournal.com profile] ncis_flashfic 'Epistolatory' challenge.

I love this story as much for what is not said as for what is said. Because with these two that's where the emotional bond is - in what isn't said. And yes, the last two lines cut me to shreds every frakking time.

Postscript - A sequel to this wonderful story has (literally!) just been posted: Beyond the Burn Bag at Bethesda.

07:29 pm 'Apocalypse Soon-ish' by Phil Foster (PG)
(or Days of Future Last Tuesday Evening, Just Before the Football)

Fandom: X-MEN COMICVERSE
Pairing: No focus, but canon pairings mentioned
Author Website: None, but other works can be found at Fonts of Wisdom
Why this must be read:

I'm afraid I have a penchant for fic with really long titles. They're really worth the reading, though.

Apocalypse Soon-ish is a parody fic written as a re-telling of Marvel's "Days of Future Past" timeline with full knowledge of the over-done angst and the mind-melting plot twists inherent to Marvel, all the while poking fun at it all in a way that only a fanfic can. The whole thing is done in a Bible-ish testament style with chapters, verses, and more 'thee's and 'eth's and 'verily's than you can shake a stick at, but still has some very amusing references to current society.

You know what? If I keep writing, I'll spoil the fic for you. Go spend the 20 minutes or so and take a glance at the excerpt. I'll hazard a guess that even if you've got very little background with the fandom, you'll find this fic amusing.
