Why this must be read:

Because I don't want to get stale (it's the leading cause of death) today I'm reccing a short Ray/Ray story for a change. And I think I've picked a doozey. [livejournal.com profile] slidellra is a pretty well-known author in this fandom, and given the fact that this story was written for [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction's recent Five Challenge most of you probably read it, but I think it's worth a second pass. Her take on Kowalski and Vecchio's relationship knocks me flat, and she perfectly nails Kowalski's bristly vulnerability and Vecchio's world-weary amusement at the curveballs life keeps throwing him. I told S in the comments that reading her stories is always like watching a magician at work ("Presto! Perfect characterization! Abracadabra! Terrific RayV voice!"). Check out this short, heart-twisty fic, and make sure you tell [livejournal.com profile] slidellra you liked it!

Why not try a short excerpt? )

Why this must be read:

Shortly after The Sentinel was canceled, several virtual seasons were assembled. The two seasons by Faux Paws Productions are my favorite, and is was one of my favorite 'episodes.' It features a shot Blair and a blind Jim supporting each other as they try to stay alive. Mackie's writing, though tight, can be beautifully descriptive, and I love her dialog.

Why this must be read:
I really love smarm. Really, really, really. And this is probably the third-most smarmy story in TS fandom. If you know TS, you know what this means.

Why this must be read :

There aren't that many fics in the fandom that explore Clark and Martha's bond and just that. There are many that use Martha as a matchmaker for whatever OTP, but just not enough, even years after this one was written, that add as much heart and depth to what it possibly the most defining relationship of Clark's life.

This one explores that mother-son bond beautifully and with the bittersweet edge that hints that even Martha knows her time with her son is both limited and clearly borrowed.

An Excerpt:

"I thought finding answers would make everything better. I should have listened to you and Dad. I'm not ready for this. I'm not ready to be..." His words stumbled off into silence.

"To be what, Clark?" Martha prompted.

Looking up at her finally, he revealed the depth of his grief and unhappiness in his expression, and in the tears he wiped away on his sleeve.

"Alone."

It was on the tip of her tongue to make a denial. He would never be alone, because he'd have a hell of a time getting rid of her, but she sensed he wasn't ready to hear that particular speech just yet.
