09:13 am Songvid Oddities: The L Word - Maps
Vidder: Sherlock Nomes
Musical artist: Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Pairing: Shane/Jenny
Vidder on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] sherlock_nomes
Vidder's website: Play the Music
Why this vid kicks ass: I'm feeling totally inarticulate today, so imagine I'm waving my hands with wild enthusiasm, while I say key phrases like: "coming out done the hard way" and "hair-cutting" and "that's what re-making yourself feels like". This is a pretty, but surprisingly violent, songvid with the angst taken to eleven.

10:22 am On the Matter of Crushes by reddwarfer [R]
Fandom: Prince of Tennis
Pairing: [Rikkaidai] Yukimura/Sanada
Author: Leila, [livejournal.com profile] reddwarfer
Website: n/a
Rating: R
Why this story must be read:

There is something inherently satisfying when someone like Yukimura Seiichi, who believes himself to be in complete control of all the unruly elements of his psyche, who fancies that cultured and gentle mannerisms, speech, appearance and cultivated aspects of personality will negate the direct contradiction of a ruthless and cold nature, realizes that his will doesn't entirely hold the reins over his actions after all. Sanada Genichirou is the cause of this perturbance, and Leila crafts a very pleasant PWP from his distraction without pulling Yukimura the least bit out of character.

10:51 am Letters To La Paz by Raven (PG13)
Fandom: SLINGS AND ARROWS
Pairing: Geoffrey/Ellen
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] loneraven
Author Website: Sleeping With Ghosts; her other S&A fic can be found through her tag on Slings & Arrows links
Why this must be read: It's smart and sensitive and evocative in all the right ways. Plus, awesome Ellen voice.

Set after season three. Geoffrey’s in Montreal, alone, while Ellen finishes her contractual obligations. It's not really a pairing fic in one sense - it's about Geoffrey, and his passion and his humor and his slight off-centeredness from everything else in the world. But Ellen grounds him, in a way, and his new stage manager, and Anna, off in La Paz, and - it's just a wonderful, wonderful story. I particularly love Ellen, who seems to have stepped right out of S3. I can hear her perfectly.

11:45 am Iago, by shimere277 (Gen)

Title: Iago
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] shimere277Author's website: none
Fandom: Drake's venture
Pairing: none

Why this must be read: This is a very short piece. It takes place long after Drake's return, and still long after his success against the Spanish fleet. He is at the end of his life, and he is bored. He meets a young playwriter who is always in search of inspiration...

"Iago" is history at his best and an awesome ficlet. It's full of longing for a ghost from the past while the present is already fading. Only the figure of a young Shakespeare stands out of the shadows, vivid and brilliant.

12:17 pm Burn, by blakefancier (slash, NC-17)

Title: Burn
Fandom: Drake's Venture
Pairing: Drake/Dougthie
Author's website: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] blakefancier

Why this must be read: I'm reccing two very short fics the same day. This one indeed, burns. It's PJS, and Doughtie is alive.
You might call this a PWP, I guess, but there is so much angst packed in so little words that it deserves much more than this simplistic label. The writing is concise and almost cruel. Read it, and you'll know what "excellent" means.

No exerpt because it's so short.

01:05 pm Parallel Connections Over Symmetric Spaces by Dale (NC-17)
Fandom: NUMB3RS
Pairing: Don/Charlie, Don/Kim Hall, Charlie/Kim Hall, Don/Amita, Charlie/Amita, Don/Terry, Don/OCs, Charlie/OCs...
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] viggorlijah
Author Website: No longer extant, but here's the archive.org version
Why this must be read:

An explanation about that long, long pairing list: This is primarily a Don/Charlie story, but it's also a story of how they cope with wanting the thing they're not supposed to want by doing a fantastic number of stupid things with other people--including people the other had dibs on. The story opens with Charlie coming home from having sex with Kim Hall, Don's former fiancée, because he hoped she'd be able to tell him something about Don, about why he left Charlie for New Mexico, because even though Charlie knows, he doesn't understand. When they're together, it fucks them up; when they're apart, it still fucks them up. It's an unsolvable equation.

quote )

This is a long, gorgeous, painful, beautiful exploration of Don and Charlie wanting and fighting and regretting and breaking up and getting back together again. They're so tightly bound up in each other that it's just inescapable.

06:33 pm except you ravish me by solvent90 (R)
Fandom: THE HISTORY BOYS
Pairing: Dakin/Scripps
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] solvent90
Author Website: unknown
Why this must be read:

It's Scripps dealing with Oxford and God and Dakin, and how anti-climactic university is and how nothing and everything changes. The fic delivers such a great sense that Scripps and Dakin really are best friends, and how Scripps knows Dakin so very well, and finds himself falling for him almost against his will. The romance is wonderfully understated and true to the characters (and, well, Dakin's hardly the romantic sort, after all), the language is funny and insightful and lovely in turns, and [livejournal.com profile] solvent90 is a master of the gradual, wonderful, tortuous build-up, which makes the climax when they actually act on it that much more satisfying.

09:06 pm Carnival of Souls by Katikat (R)
Fandom: GORGEOUS CARAT
Pairing: Ray (aka Noir) x Florian
Author on LJ: Katikat
Author Website: http://katikat.livejournal.com/

Why this must be read:

A dark piece that takes place post-manga series with Florian and Noir still not able to deal with what happened in Morocco. The mood of the story works perfectly, and the dialogue and character interactions are nicely written. Note: this story stands on its own but there is a sequel, Innocent Souls.
