12:08 pm Six Lessons Behind the Purple Dress by Quietcontrary (PG for suggestiveness)
Another fun, new story!

Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN
Pairing: none, gen
Length: ~2,000 words
Author on LJ:

Author website: on her LJ site
Why this must be read:

Well, first off, she wrote it from a prompt I have her, so I already have a selfish interest in promoting this, but more to the point - it's a delightful story.

Quietcontrary is quickly becoming one of the best gen writers in the fandom.  She has a wonderful grasp of the characters and of the old west setting, and she writes cleanly and well.  This particular story is an exploration of the question of how Ezra managed to pull off the highly-amusing 'purple-dress episode' from "Working Girls" - where Ezra dresses up as a woman and sings at the 'bar' in the 'saloon' of Wickestown.  Each of the other six members of the seven bring out some detail of Ezra's adventure - and his past adventures!  Amusing and light, and the Ezra-voice is on the money!

And while I'm on the subject:

Why this must be read:

Another delightful piece from quietcontrary, wherein Nathan is the POV character - and wherein he discovers that Ezra's 'wicked ways' are harder to manage than he realized!  It's not only the story of a con, but it's a lovely look into Nathan's character, one that gets shorted too easily in the fandom.  The plot is well-done and the characterizations on the mark.

03:34 pm Yom Kipper by Teresa C (PG-13)
Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: none, gen
Length: ~23,700 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] teresa_c
Author Website: The Keep | Teresa's stories @ HL Fiction Archive | Teresa's stories indexed on LJ
Why this must be read:

The fallout of CaH/Rev 6:8 is common territory for many Highlander stories, but there are few with better honesty and clarity than this one. This story is essentially about friendship and healing, and the long, sometimes painful, but ultimately worthwhile process that can be. It features Duncan, Methos, and Joe, as well as Cassandra and an original male character created by Sandra MacDonald in a different, unrelated story. Teresa's writing is always uplifting, even when tackling difficult subject matter, and she has a wonderfully light touch with characters, emotions, and events that can be heavy and complicated. Also, the ending always makes me fall in love with Duncan and Methos all over again.

05:23 pm Virescit Vulnere Virtus by castalie (PG-13)
So, it's been forever since I've done this. Let's see if I still know what I'm doing.

Merlin is now a full-time fandom! The awesome overview by [livejournal.com profile] cupidsbow is here. And if you want to take a turn reccing, go here

Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] castalie
Author Website: N/A

Why this must be read:

This is a great glimpse into a possible future for Merlin and Arthur. What impresses me the most about this story is that Merlin and Arthur are still very much Merlin and Arthur, but older versions who have been through a lot both good and bad. The depiction of a more evolved version of their friendship is just perfect. I can easily see Merlin and Arthur being like this and having this exact relationship in the future.

This story made me so happy and like any glimpse into their future, it made me want to find some way for them all to live happily ever.

07:34 pm The Rest of Your Life by Candle Beck (NC-17)
Hi, I'm Ang, and I'll be driving the van for one of this month's featured small fandoms: baseball RPF. I'm afraid the fandom is such that an overview is functionally impossible, so I'm just going to jump right in with the recs.

Fandom: MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL RPF
Pairing: Eric Chavez/Eric Munson
Length: around 200,000 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] candle_beck
Author Website: None
Why this must be read:

The Rest of Your Life is the story that got me into baseball fic in the first place. It's a long, sprawling story, spanning the lives of two professional baseball players from when they were best friends as kids to when they were grown men whose lives didn't go precisely as planned.

Candle Beck is one of the best writers in baseball fandom for making readers really feel how heartbreakingly beautiful the game is. Her stories break my heart as much as the game itself does sometimes, and Candle Beck's ability to seamlessly tie the heartbreak of a relationship to the heartbreak of baseball's mythos is what makes me keep coming back to her journal for more.

You don't need to understand, much less love, baseball to read The Rest of Your Life, but reading it made me remember all the things about the game I loved, even if maybe it wasn't so sensible of me to feel that way.
