Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES Pairing: Gen Length: 3,000 words Author on LJ: no Author Website: none
Why this must be read: Just for something a little different, I present this. Never fear, I'll also post a review of a slash story tonight.
Rex Stout, in addition to being the author of the Nero Wolfe mysteries was a well-known member of the Baker Street Irregulars (the Sherlock Holmes readers group.) At one meeting he gave a slightly tongue-in-cheek presentation entitled "Watson Was A Woman." He goes through the canon (Doyle's stories) to find quotes that sound feminine and presents them in his paper. The speech, which did not go over well with the group, was later printed in a magazine.
He demonstrates through the use of numerology, acrostics and other "proofs" the name of Holmes's wife and the details of their marriage. I like it because it gets a little over-the-top and I find it a good parody of several books I've read that profess to find hidden messages in some item.
Stout maintained for many years that Holmes and Irene Adler were involved and had a child. He wrote articles defending his theory that their child was Lord Peter Whimsey.

Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: refs to Jack/Ianto and Gwen/Rhys, surprise punchline pairing Length: 4,462 words Author on LJ: apiphileAuthor Website: http://delirium.org.uk/Why this must be read: This epilogue to “Meat” highlights the fact that Torchwood bears many hallmarks of the genre or mode named in the title: improbable situations, concealed or mistaken identities, plots that tend to accelerate to a climax (often involving a chase), absurdity, slapstick, and verbal humor of varying degrees of sophistication. However, many of the laughs in this story are etched with acid, as in this scene between Ianto and Gwen on the latter’s doorstep: ( He pulled the front door open just as Gwen, on the other side, was about to put her key in the lock. ) But don’t worry, there are lighter moments — Ianto raised his eyebrows. "Your cunning plan is all backwards."
"My plan?"
"You're meant to make me think you took it and admit to Gwen that you didn't." — and you could argue that it has a happy ending. Farce

Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pairing: Buffy/Spike Length: 30,000 words. Author on LJ: kallystenAuthor Website: DivagationsWhy this must be read:In an alternate season 4 Buffy's decision to send the gem of Amara to Angel had horrible consequences: seeing the sun made him too happy and Angelus was back. He killed those who could shove soul back into his body and started playing cruel games with Buffy to drive her insane. But, unbeknownst to him, Buffy had an ally: Spike, who swore to avenge Angelus for torturing him. Kallysten is a professional writer and she knows how to grab reader's attention and never let go. In Falling she combines the elements of action thriller and romantic drama as Buffy and Spike try to beat Angelus and their own controversial emotions towards each other. Kallysten's language is very poetic and expressive; the story is told concurrently from Buffy's and Spike's POV and one of the most interesting aspects of the fic is the chance to look at the same situation from opposite sides. Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES Pairing: Holmes/Watson Length: 5,700 words Author on LJ: cimness Author Website: cimorine.net
Why this must be read: This tale is woven around and into Doyle's tale "The Bruce-Partington Plans." In that story Holmes asks Watson to help him break into a house to locate evidence. In this story, told from Watson's POV, we see his reaction to the request as well as his deep feelings for Holmes.
Flush with success, too filled with adrenaline to sleep, the two men repair to Baker Street. There Holmes invites Watson into his room for a brandy and tells him of some further action he has planned. Given that they are in Holmes's bedroom, wearing their dressing gowns and drinking brandy, you can guess what that action might be.
I thought the peek into Watson's mind was very well done. He is portrayed as a more complex and feeling man than usual, and I was really drawn to him and his emotional struggles.

Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: Zoe/Wash Length: c 900 words Author on LJ: voleuse Author Website: moodfic Why this must be read: Angst-free and charming, this is pre-series Wash and Zoe written for the onebedficathon, playing with a favourite trope. Vidder: A T. M. Production Musical artist: Simon & Garfunkel Pairing: none Vidder on LJ: shfanVidder's website: hereWhy this vid kicks ass:This one rec was the most difficult to write because there are so many great and gifted artists and even more wonderful fanvids I would like to recommend, but I had to choose just one for this month. So I was thinking and thinking and then I just asked myself which vid I really liked the most and suddenly I had no problem with picking up the right one. For me it's very important to know whose POV it is in the vid but more important is the tale the video tells. Almost anyone today can put some scenes together but to tell a story fitting in with the lyrics is not that easy. This one masterpiece is about Hutch's investigation taking place during the episode "Bloodbath". It's a black and white video, with only hints of color; you just know that in this episode there are no grays – it's all about good and bad. Hutch is the White Knight fighting the forces of the Dark – all in his world is either black or white. While watching this video you can FEEL his desperation, his struggle to find Starsky, and more – to find him in time. And everything that accompanies him is just a silence. And this silence in the end is the only thing that has a meaning in Hutch's life. In the end you realize that this strange Silence was actually Starsky; Starsky was with his friend all the time and together they won. As they always do. Fandom: TORCHWOOD Pairing: Jack/Ianto, ref to Ianto/Lisa Length: 2,787 words Author on LJ: derryderrydownAuthor Website: Gildy ClobberWhy this must be read: Most fandoms have stock situations — think Jim and Blair after the fountain, or Fraser and the Ray(s) of your choice in a Canadian shack.* I like to think of these stories as the fanfic equivalent of competitive skaters’ compulsory figures. Here, derryderrydown gives us her take on a Torchwood standard, Ianto-beds-Jack-to-keep-Lisa-hidden. ( “Tell me, Ianto,” Jack murmured. “Am I just a convenient warm body?” ) Witty dialogue, hot sex, and savory angst. This judge gives it a ten. Pobol y Ffaglcoedwig* Admittedly, this one has metastasized and is now a panfandom cliché, but it arguably could only have started in dueSouth.

Vidder: SDWolfpup Musical artist: Paul Simon Pairing: None? (Maybe a kind of gen or a kind of F/V/K-ish all-embracingness that makes you just go OH BOYS! and squish them all. Or, you know, however you read it. Power to the viewer, man!) Vidder on LJ: sdwolfpupVidder's website: HereWhy this vid kicks ass: This vid is a great big warm fuzzy hug for due South, for Vecchio, Kowalski, and Fraser as special individual snowflakes and as partners. Each guy gets a section of character study rather amazingly well matched to the lyrics, and, among other nifty and marvelous things, sdwolfpup (brilliantly!) uses crosscutting to show (hot, heartwarming, oh boys!) similarities between the Rays' relationships with Fraser. And in a vid that's already overflowing with affection for its characters, she gives us the extra gift of a nod to the ensemble that never fails to make me all emotional. You Can Call Me is this fabulous combination of smart and well-observed and glee-inducing and touching and fun. Kind of like due South. And fandom. \o/ You Can Call Me(And on that incredibly enjoyable note, that's the end of my month at the wheel. Thanks, crack_van, for the chance to share the love. And thanks to zabira for helping me out.)

Vidder: anoelMusical artist: Peter Mulvey Pairing: Duncan/Methos Vidder on LJ: anoelVidder's website: Anoel's vids: Defying GravityWhy this vid kicks ass:Watching The Trouble With Poets at VVC a couple of years ago was like rediscovering fanvids for Highlander all over again. For that alone, this vid wins. It's charming, insightful, and shows everything we love about Duncan and Methos and the D/M pairing. anoel brings a fresh and new energy to all of the well known scenes and clips through her great editing. Please send feedback so maybe anoel will make more D/M vids. :D This vid is available for download and streaming. Link below goes to vidder's announcement post on LJ. The Trouble With Poets

Fandom: How I Met Your Mother Pairing: Ted/the mother, Marshall/Lily Length: I'd say 5000 words, max, and that's probably a generous estimate Author on LJ: mardiaAuthor's website: I don't think so Why this must be read: How I Met Your Mother is a sitcom. It's a sitcom that gives the occasional tug to the old heart-strings (particularly lately) but a sitcom nonetheless, and a very funny one. But what mardia somehow, amazingly managed to do with this story is to write not just heart-tugging, but full-on heart-wrenching, heart-breaking, sob-your-heart-out ANGST for one of the funniest shows on TV today, and more incredibly, still keep it absolutely in character. All based on the simple premise: so why is Ted telling his kids this long, convoluted story, and more importantly, why are they listening to it? Aside from breaking your heart into a million pieces, she also gives the kids names, personalities, and makes them live on the page so that you ache for them as much as for the characters we know better. This is the last story I've chosen for you for this month – I hope you liked some of the pieces as much as I did and you let the authors know. Thank you for being there and for your kind comments. I just can't wait for your recs lauramcewan :o) Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 83k Author on LJ: not known Author Website: HEREWhy this must be read: The last recommended fanfic was written by my absolutely favorite author, but this story is not easy to read. There is Hutch, who worked undercover for a couple of months and who now realizes that it changed him more than he had ever expected and there is Starsky who tries to reach his partner hidden under the layers of the character Hutch used to be for such a long time. They both know that they desperately need each other, but Hutch, for some reason, can not let Starsky help him the only way that had always worked – he can not allow Starsky to touch him. But Starsky would not be Starsky if he could not find a way, right? It was over.
Two months, thousands of taxpayer dollars, miles of video and audio tape, and one weary detective had finally led to this: bringing down the largest child prostitution ring in L.A. And the only part of that equation David Starsky cared about now was the weary detective.
Starsky stood leaning against the wall of the mastermind’s study, a controlled confusion of FBI and LAPD and ATF and CIA and a half-dozen other acronyms swirling around him. His eyes tracked a single figure in the midst of the chaos, as Ken Hutchinson answered questions, pointed out evidence to the officers, made a photo ID of a suspect. He was the eye of the storm that revolved around him, isolated, apart even as he did his duty.
Starsky crossed his arms and kept vigil with hooded eyes.
He was watching over his partner as he had from a distance these past two months. But more than that, he was looking for the man he knew underneath the stranger only a dozen feet away. The pale blond hair was now a mass of permed, darker curls, and a thick beard covered the lower part of his face. A cigarette protruded from his lips, and as soon as it burned low, it was replaced by another. The easy grace was gone, replaced by sharp, jittery movements, the whole body language shifted into tones of anxiety and tension. Hutch looked ill, what little body fat he had, gone now, face sunken, cheeks flushed. And his eyes... A Partner Thing

Vidder: Buffyann Musical Artist: Zero 7 Pairing: None Vidder on LJ: buffyannVidder's Website: their LJ Why this vid kicks ass: I first saw this vid after it premiered at VividCon '08. There are many reasons to rec it, but in looking for a vid to rec here, I was especially struck by how it's a pretty good thematic introduction to BSG. It's general enough that it wouldn't really give away anything, but it covers practically every character on the show and does a great job conveying some of the show's overarching themes - humanity's capacity for guilt, perseverance, kindness, cruelty, love and most of all, hope. Aesthetically speaking, this vid is absolutely gorgeous to watch, sad and inspiring all at the same time, covering all the seasons through 3.5, with excellent attention paid to musicality and pacing. To this day, I still get chills watching it. This World

Vidder: Jamie Ritchey Musical artist: Bruce Springsteen Pairing: J/ffffffff Vidder on LJ: unknown Vidder’s Website: Jamie’s Sentinel Songvids Why this vid kicks ass: It’s another nicely put together vid by the talented Jamie. *And* it’s another Moonridge offering. Jamie actually did two Moonridge vids last year. The other, “You Can’t Lose Me” is also found at her site and is just superb. So why did I decide on this one? I *could* say it’s because Bruce has just released a new album this month. But I have to confess it’s because she created it for me! I was in a Sentinel conference chat where we were discussing the abundance of red-heads (mostly criminals) who tend to turn Jim’s head. The next day I was listening to this song and bam! It was like pairing chocolate and peanut butter. A few months later came the Moonridge auction and Jamie agreed to make my vision into reality. The tongue-in-cheek song is perfect for the show and, as usual, Jamie matches up clips to lyrics splendidly. The most amazing thing is that she was able to accomplish anything at all. She was one of many victims of Hurricane Ike. Although she lost power for weeks and had to leave her home for a while, it didn’t crush her spirit or her creativity. I hope you enjoy this fun vid as much as I do. Jamie’s Sentinel Songvids Don't forget that vidders love feedback as much as writers!

Vidder: dollsome Musical artist: The Romantics Pairing: Barney/Robin Vidder on LJ: dollsomeVidder's website: She's here on YouTube and here on fanfiction.net Why this vid kicks ass: While HIMYM fan videos are not exactly a dime a dozen, neither are they nearly as hard to find as they used to be. But, even taking that into consideration, this is still the *only* one that really made an impression on me. It's fun, flirty, a perfect song choice for the characters/pairing, and to top it off really well made too. The only thing I *don't* like about it is that there's a one-second rough spot where she cuts the song at the end, but otherwise the video is nearly flawless. It's one of those videos you can watch on repeat without getting sick of it. ;-) What I Like About You

Vidder: Yugiw99 Musical artist: Tom Jones Pairing: Gen Vidder on LJ: unknown Vidder's website: This was on You Tube
Why this vid kicks ass: Unfortunately these days it's hard to find Sherlock Holmes videos that aren't an homage to Jeremy Britt and his brilliant portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. While I think he did a fantastic job, for crack_van I'd really like to find some videos that reflect the stories and not the actor.
This video is a paean to some of the ladies who appear in the stories, as seen on Granada TV

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS / TOP GEAR Pairing: Test Card Girl / The Stig Length: less than 1000 words Author on LJ: culf Author Website: Culf at the Collators' Den Why this must be read: I wanted to end the month where I began, with the TCG being both lovable and creepy as hell. Fandom: NARUTO Pairing: Everyone but mostly Gaara/Lee, Guy/Kakashi, Skika/Choji, Shizune/Tsunade, Kiba/Shino, etc. Author on LJ: ManicJoyLength: 11,000 words Author website: ManicJoyWhy this should be read:Last year during the Sweet Charity (fandom - making a difference) auction, ManicJoy was the writer who made my little fangirl's heart go 'get her, win her, want her, Now!' See, she had listed Naruto as one of her potential fandoms & as you have discovered, I am always craving a good Lee/Gaara fic. And then I won her. And I got scared. What if she couldn't write Lee/Gaara like I wanted? What if she was a Naruto/Sasake person? Shika/Choji? Sakura/Ino? Teamgroupings? What if, what if ... Yes, I admit it. I panicked. I dumped every pairing I loved in Naruto on this poor woman - and a few I'd never read. (sigh) I'm so lucky she didn't flame me, kill me, and salt my bones. Instead, she spent months, months, Months trying to give me what she thought I wanted. She lost her beta, and then another ran away. (I swear, I'm personally responsible for her loss of more betas...) Then she gave up, and wrote it like she wanted. :-) Stepping Stones is one of the strongest, tightest, smoothest stories I've ever read in AnY fandom. The author covers canon, adds an incredible layer of fandom, and lays it out for the reader to revel in as I have only seen authors such as O.S. Card and EE Beck do. It's fast, showing events like the click of a camera. Almost every character of Konoha and Suna has a moment that the reader can enjoy - some are funny, painful, many are bittersweet. These are the people you know from the series growing up. Life is happening and in the middle of it all, Rock Lee and Gaara try to build a relationship. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Stepping StonesFor an extra special treat, spend a couple moments with her Incredible Drabbles. I dare you not to laugh!!

Vidder: Melina Musical artist: OK Go Pairing: Jack/everyone he encounters (including the robots — he totally cops a feel) Vidder on LJ: melina123Vidder's website: Melina’s Misty MoonWhy this vid kicks ass:Could there be a more perfect song for a vid about Jack Harkness?* Melina matches it with crisply edited footage of Jack in full Charm Assault Mode, and some wonderful reaction shots from Ianto (including an awesome Eyebrow Lift). You’re So Damn Hot* Okay, maybe Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever.” But for a cheerful vid, the OK Go tune wins hands down.

Fandom: NARUTO Pairing: Gaara/Matsuri, Gaara/Lee, Author on LJ: darkjewel79Length: 27,000 words Author website: darkjewel79Why this should be read:I'd never read a Gaara/Lee story like Never Too Late before but it called to me. It's incredibly tight characterization, taken from Rock Lee's POV, may be the only reason it's so believable but as a girl raised on Harlequins, it was poignant and sad - a 2 hankie read with a wonderful happy ending. It's so easy to see how lost Lee would be without Gai to love and notice him. And the way the author makes the loudest chunin besides Naruto disappear in a crowd - heartbreaking. As is the way the author makes Gaara - socially inept Gaara - the one who notices. Ahh, just try Never Too Late. “And who will you live for?”
“No one remembers me. No one will care if I disappear.”
“I will care."Warnings: attempted suicide ... in a manner of speaking!

Vidder: svothfan Musical artist: The Temptations Pairing: Chloe/Clark Vidder on LJ: unknown(?) Vidder's website: svothfan's youtube channelWhy this vid kicks ass:I've loved this song since I was a little girl, and my parents loved it before me. It was, to me, immortalized in the film of the same name, and I even immortalized the song and movie, SV-style, in one of my own fanfics. When I discovered there was a Chloe/Clark video to the song on youtube, I was downright THRILLED, because I figured it'd be adorable. And it is. Absolutely adorable. I can honestly say it's my favorite video on the whole of youtube, and a must-see for any Chlark fan. My Girl
