Fandom: FIREFLY Pairing: GEN Length: One-shot Author on LJ: rinalin Author Website: Fanfic MasterlistWhy this must be read: This is a short but very poignant and touching story. I loved the idea that a song could bring together and unite the whole crew. The scene with Zoe at the end is just heartbreaking. This is post-BDM so be warned, I definitely cried a little bit when I read this. The presence of friends who are gone is palpable through the music and the way the characters react to it. Fandom: The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Vidder: serenaar Musical artist: "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse Pairing: Napoleon Solo / Illya Kuryakin Vidder on LJ: serenaar Vidder's website: Here's her channel on YouTube Why this vid kicks ass: Serenaar has put together a vid with all of the best clips of the boys shooting bad guys while looking fab with a pounding song by Muse moving the whole thing along. It's a sexy, violent, funny and crisply edited video that highlights the best of what the show had to offer. Ooh, and there's plenty of holster porn on display! Talk about sexy! The Guns Affair

Fandom: STAR WARS Vidder: stephantomMusical artist: The Noose by A Perfect Circle Pairing: Gen; Darth Vader Vidder on LJ: stephantomVidder's website: YouTube Why this vid kicks ass: I'm a believer that any fanvid lives or dies with the song, and with the choice of The Noose this vidder was able to create such a haunting atmosphere in this video as it examines the question of whether or not all things can truly be forgiven. The last 30 seconds of this video are perfection as the lyrics of the song contrast with Anakin being locked into the suit once and for all. To The Dead

Fandom: DOCTOR WHO Vidder: calapineMusical artist: Carbon Leaf Pairing: Gen Vidder on LJ: calapineVidder's website: Vids tag on LivejournalWhy this vid kicks ass: Honestly, there was a time everyone on LJ seemed to be in love with calapine's first version of this vid, while my reaction was a decided "meh." However, she recently redid it, and this version is SO MUCH BETTER. The visuals and the lyrics are more synchronized this time, and the parallels--such as the many images of Sarah Jane throughout time or the era-spanning Doctor/Master moments--are stronger. Even if you didn't like the original vid or aren't a fan of Classic Who, I'd still recommend giving this redo a try. What About Everything II

Fandom: Smallville Vidder: talitha78 Musical artist: The Ting Tings Pairing: Gen Vidder on LJ: talitha78 Vidder's website: None available Why this vid kicks ass: This is a fantastic look at the character on Smallville that so many of us tune in for, Clark Kent. It's his journey as a man and a hero, a look at what he's searching for. talitha78 incorporates so many clips into this vid, clips from all eight seasons, and she does it seamlessly, and blends them into story - a story of the life of Clark. I was hoping to provide a link to her LJ, so you could chose which version to download and watch, however, her site is friends-locked. Therefore, I am providing the link to the YouTube version of the vid below.
ETA: Thanks to enderwiggin24 , I found out that her LJ is only locked for personal posts, not vids. So, if you want a choice of downloads for this magnificent video and/or want to leave her feedback, head here.

Fandom: FIREFLY Vidder: cnstrikesback Musical artist: The Killers Pairing: Gen Vidder on LJ: Unknown Vidder's website: YouTube siteWhy this vid kicks ass: I've been waiting for this day because I always tell people about this video. It's just too fantastic for words. It's a tribute to the crew as a whole, how they came together and what happens to them during the series. The editing is incredible and the video made me completely fall in LOVE with the song that they use. It's a perfect song choice, it fits so well with the 'verse. I watch this video at least once a week and it always makes me fall in love with Firefly all over again. Okay I need to end this rambling incoherentness before I embarrass myself. Just go watch it. Seriously. It's shiny, I promise you'll love it. All These Things That I've Done

Vidder: Laura McEwan Musical artist: Catie Curtis Pairing: Starsky & Hutch Vidder on LJ: lauramcewanVidder's website: hereWhy this vid kicks ass:I will not write much about why I wanted to share this music video with you, because no matter what I write, it won't be enough. It's so complex, meaningful, sensual and true that even after you've watched it umpteenth time you still catch things you've never noticed before. You can watch it if you had never seen any episode of the show and you still would understand it. But if you do know the show, you will find the second meaning, the third and who knows how many more. This vid always makes me smile, always cheers me up and always helps me appreciate the good things that happen to me. I knew that I loved you the first time you got into my car Your cheeks were flushed and I felt a hush come over me in the dark I got us lost but at the next cross you said I don't care where we are I'm in the right car( the rest of the lyrics here )Magnolia Street

Hallo, it's the last rec I have for this month. If you would like to drive for Starsky & Hutch go here and sign up. It's always a great adventure, trust me :) I really enjoyed the time I spent here and I hope that you liked at least some of the stories I have chosen for you this time. It's also David Soul's birthday today, so here's a special birthday story. Fandom: STARSKY & HUTCH Pairing: none Length: 26k Author on LJ: not known Author Website: HEREWhy this must be read: Some stories make you smile, some make you cry and some stories give you hope. This is one of them. Starsky is looking for a birthday gift for Hutch, but nothing is perfect enough to satisfy his expectations. Is there even such thing as a perfect gift? What do you think? :) "Hi...I'm looking for uh.." Starsky quickly dug the paper out of his pocket, unfolding it to see the name, ".a...Jacob Myers."
"Who sent ya?"
"A guy at the mall. He works at a store that sells games. An old guy."
The man let out a snort. "Mel. You must need something special."
"Yes. A gift."
"For who?"
"A friend."
"Just a friend? Mel wouldn't send ya out here if you were just shopping for a friend."
"He...we're cops...He's my partner."
The screen door opened and Starsky was faced with warm brown eyes set deep in a well lined face.
"Mel wouldn't a sent ya out here if he was just a partner."
Starsky hesitated for just a moment before speaking. "He helped me a lot this year. I was shot. I almost died. I'm back on the force because of him - I just want him to know how much I lo.... I appreciate what he did."
Jacob nodded his understanding. "And you think a gift will do that." He sighed, a tired sound "Alright. Come on in."
Starsky followed him into the dark house. THE PERFECT GIFT by Momo

Fandom: The X-Files Vidder: ThisIsNotHappening Musical Artist: Dolly Parton Pairing: mostly gen, Mulder/Scully Vidder Website:: YouTube ChannelWhy this Vid kicks ass: When I started going through vids for this rec, I realized what a challenge I was facing. I wanted something original, set to an unusual song choice, with some humor. It took quite a while - until I discovered ThisIsNotHappening. This vid is all about Mulder and Scully in their jobs. What kind of toll being the FBI's most unwanted duo is going to take. It certainly made Dolly Parton's song mean something completely new to me. Get ready for some laughs and check it out. 9 to 5 by ThisIsNotHappening

Fandom Tour of Duthy Vidder: sassyinkpenMusical Artist: Kevin MacLeod Pairing: Zeke/Myron, Myron/Johnny, Johnny/Doc Vidder Website:: Tour of Duty VidsWhy this Vid kicks ass: This is a really cute and original idea done by Sassy that is a take off of those old silent movies. It's totally tongue-in-cheek and you don't have to be a fan to appreciate this vid and have a good laugh. It's well worth a look at. Cassanova

Fandom: Bandom Pairings: Bob Bryar/Gerard Way, Frank Iero/Brian Schecter Length: one-shot; novella-length: 20,359 words Author on LJ: mwestbelleAuthor Website: Fiction MasterlistWhy this must be read:In this non-band AU, Gee is a famous comic book artist and Bob is Gerard's assistant. Because I think Bob is fab, I especially enjoyed the Bob POV. The interaction of the guys felt in character throughout. The Second One (or: Adventures at JerseyCon)

Fandom: Psych Pairing: None! Gus Character vid :) Artist on LJ: talitha78Artist Website: Master Vid ListWhy this must be watched: Gus is an awesome character. He's hilarious, smart, and his own person. He's also not your stereotypical black/minority character, relegated to a background role or there to die first and say "that is whack" (to paraphrase another movie). While it may appear that way at first, he's not just Shawn's backup. Gus is as much a part of the Psych dynamic as Shawn. In fact, the show would be the same without him. Gus, over the seasons, has proven to be strong, willful, and really smart. And he's completely unapologetic on those points. Shawn seems to walk all over him, but that's really not the case. Shawn gets away with exactly as much as Gus lets him--because there is no Shawn without Gus, and definitely no Psych. (Seriously, Shawn has eidetic memory, but he would never remember to pay the bills.) This video plays on the idea of bot what is 'white' and 'nerdy.' And it's hilarious, some of my favorite moments in all of Psych. (Also, Psychites, remember the ep where Gus was Mr. White and Shawn was Mr. Brown? Yeah....) Fandom: PSYCH Pairing: Shawn/Gus Length: 2300 Author on LJ: deadlybrideAuthor Website: Why this must be read: Probably if people knew about them, they wouldn't expect that Shawn always bottomed. It wasn't that Gus was inconsiderate, or anything, or had weird, hetero-issues about letting another guy do things to him. It was just… Yeah, my recs just needed a nice smut fic. And it's Shawn/Gun, no less! Not a pairing I usually read because I love them as dorky BFFs, but this musing on Shawn's bottomness is just great. We really get into Gus' head, and all the layers of his relationship with Shawn. Their past, their present, their possible future all rolled together. And it's really, really hot sexings. Balance

I've had a terrific time reccing this month! And now I'll leave you with one of my all time favorite vids. Fandom: Supernatural Pairing: SPN/Fandom and Fandom/Fandom Artist on LJ: counteragentArtist Website: Counter Agent’s Vid TagWhy this must be watched: This is the ultimate representation of why fandom is so awesome. We fight and we wank but we get right back up and start doing what we do best, demonstrating our love through fic and art and OCD research. It’s a very good thing. Still Alive

Fandom: Tour of Duty Characters: Myron Goldman/Zeke Anderson Length: 4560 words Author on LJ: creedcascadeAuthor Website: Notes From the Underground Why this is a must read: Creed has always done a particularly good job of writing Snarky!Myron, and this story is no exception. Set in the aftermath of the war, it shows the complex relationship between Zeke and Myron, how well they both fit together and how much they need each other. Particularly telling (and amusing) is a scene showing the two men shopping for groceries. This story is a very enjoyable, long-overdue sequel to “Mrs. Anderson.” Excerpt:Myron picked a cart with a wonky front wheel but was too damn stubborn to admit he had grabbed a defective cart, so pretended there was nothing wrong with it. Every time the cart wandered off to the side, Myron pulled it back with a glower. Zeke thought it was endearing that Myron had a habit of glaring at inanimate objects, as if his scowl would scare them into submission and working properly.
Moving down the first aisle, Zeke started to go over the list in his head of what they needed. Myron was a creature of habit and liked to have the same things in the house, even though if left to his own devices, he would wait to the last minute and go to the convenience store to buy stale donuts at two in the morning with a package of smokes. If there was fresh food in the house, Myron would eat it, but it had to be convenient. Which meant Zeke usually bullied Myron into going with him just to get Myron out of the house.
They were in the aisle with breakfast cereal. Zeke put a container of oatmeal into the cart because after a lifetime in institutions, he was conditioned to start his day with a bowl of sticky porridge. He grabbed a box of Lucky Charms, knowing that Myron never ate it as it was intended, but instead would wander around the house with the box in one hand, picking out all the mini marshmallows as he plotted how to destroy the latest manuscript he was officially editing, but unofficially disembowelling.Don't Judge a Book by its Cover

Fandom: Bandom (My Chemical Romance) Vidder: thejumpcutMusical Artist: Britney Spears Pairing: Frank Iero/Gerard Way Author Website: thejumpcut's YouTube ChannelWhy this vid kicks ass:It's the last Friday of August, so tonight is is Friday Night Drive-In, a.k.a. Fanvid day. Woo hoo! I have a good one for you, and it's a YouTube vid. No, don't run away! I promise it's worth seeing! The YouTube location and liberal use of amateur camera footage is actually completely appropriate and right for a Bandom vid. That reflects the Bandom fan's experience and frame of reference, you know? Now, this vid is a couple of years old, so most Bandom fans will have seen it, along with the footage that was linked so many times. But I encourage everyone to check it out, even if you have only the faintest idea of who these people are. I think the band's energy and the sheer joy of performing all shine through. I was surprised that this hadn't been rec'd in crack_van before. (The other MCR fanvid rec posted in this community is fantastic, too.) link to vidder's post on LJ

Fandom: Bandom (Fall Out Boy) Vidder: thejumpcutMusical Artist: The Rubinoos Pairing: Pete Wentz/Patrick Stump Author Website: thejumpcut's YouTube ChannelWhy this vid kicks ass:I'm cheating to post another fanvid rec, but there were only a couple of vids in the Bandom tagged posts, and this vid is by the same vidder, but for a different band. I couldn't choose which one to rec. The MCR vid is better fannish commentary, but this PetexPatrick vid makes my heart grow two sizes and puts a huge smile on my face. The song choice is great--upbeat pop with apt lyrics: Sitting here so close, together So far we're just friends, but I'm wondering whether I, am I just imagining You, or do you really have a thing for me Like I think I see when I see you smile(By the way, here's the Peterick Bandom vid rec posted in this community, an alternate-reality PetexPatrick story.) link to vidder's post on LJ
