Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~426 words Author on LJ: smallbeerAuthor Website: Fic on AO3Why this must be read: What sold the show for me is the chemistry between the two leads: G Callen (Chris O'Donnell) and Sam Hanna (LL Cool J). They're very different in personality, stature, everything. But they get each other. The show built in a long partnership right from the beginning, and we often learn about the characters by how well their partners know them. They say things like "You know I hate needles" and "Your ears wiggle when you try to avoid a conversation. It's kind of adorable." I love this snippet because it could be a scene out of the show - at least the non-kissing part - because they're partners. They know each other so well, they trust deeply, and they don't think anyone can protect the other person as well as they can. And this just leads everyone around them to conclude that, yeah, they're totally married. ( A tiny teaser )Read the story: Adequate Back-UpAnd don't forget to feedback the author.

From now on I'm going to try a get two recs a week in. With one being Old West and one being ATF or another AU. Fandom: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (ATF) Pairing: Chris Larabee/Vin Tanner Length: One-shot Author on LJ: Unknown Author Website: Cattraine on Chris Larabee.com Why this must be read: This is one of the funniest things I've ever read. Told entirely form Chris' perspective what starts out as a simple cash for explosives hand off quickly turns into a comedy of errors. Co-staring: Top Hat Bob, Ezra's $1200 suit, a helpful pumpkin patch owner (with a burning desire to be a cowboy), and a fluff-ball. This takes very little time to read but will have you rolling with laughter by the end! ( Excerpt ) Great, Flaming Pumpkins

Fandom: NCIS: Los Angeles Pairing: Sam Hanna/G. Callen Length: ~6683 words Author on LJ: thefannishwaldoAuthor Website: Fic on AO3Why this must be read:The show's only been on a year and there isn't a ton of fanfic out there for it yet, but luckily Waldo has produced several stories, including a couple of longer ones. This one picks up a fairly common theme - Dom, the newbie, is trying to figure out exactly what the nature of that amazing partnership between G and Sam really is. There's a lot of touchy affection and hurt/comfort here; I have a quibble or two with the characterization of Sam as brawn and Callen as brains, but there's enough good stuff here I can play along, and I'm always thrilled to see a new story pop up by Waldo. Be aware this story contains spoilers for episodes 1.5 and 1.9 in particular. ( Sam indicated G with his chin. 'Concussion watch.' )Read the story: Lust, Like, Love. Not Necessarily in that Order. And don't forget to feedback the author. We want more, longer stories!!

Fandom: THE X-FILES Pairing: Mulder/Scully Length: Long series Author on LJ: jlmfromnyc Author Website: Fic Index Why this must be read:This series is my personal canon. The first two parts form one of the best post-series long stories I've read, with plenty of gut-wrenching angst and great characterization. I can't say enough adoring things about it. The later parts to this series have a different tone, but are no less wonderful. One of JL's particular talents (among many) is a gift for smart, interesting and in-character dialogue, and these stories are a perfect showcase of that talent.I've also read a lot of kidfic, and in my opinion, it doesn't get any better than this. The kids are fully realized people, not plot devices and the Mulder and Scully here have grown and learned while still remaining entirely themselves. These stories are funny, sweet, and a true joy to read. Fandom: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Pairing: Socrata/Dreilide Thrace Author on LJ: logopraxis Author Website: Fic tagWhy this must be read:Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. -TolstoyThis is a story about Kara's childhood, before her father left. This is about a couple drifting apart who have no intention of meeting each other half-way, and the child caught between them. It's a story that has no villains, but no heroes either, and it's painfully realistic. At the same time, it's not horribly angsty, just quiet and well-written. I don't normally like Kara but this got to me. ( snippet o' fic ) The Still Hour

This week's theme is Lighthearted and Comforting Recs. Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Alicia/Mikey Length: 2,752 words Author on LJ: lyoAuthor Website: Master ListWhy this must be read:A realistic, honest perspective on how being a girl as an outsider in the bands of traveling boys. Alicia has tired, stressful, niggling problems caused by dealing with the unnecessary Boy's Club attitude of the tour. The story continues in Arda to expand on the growing interest and comfort Alicia and Mikey find in each other's company. I find the kind of slow build in this universe very refreshing and soothing. Fandom: BANDOM Pairing: Gerard/Lyn-Z, Gerard/Frank, Frank/Jamia, Jamia/Lyn-Z Length: 10,250 words Author on LJ: chiromancyAuthor Website: Chiromancy on LJWhy this must be read:I am particularly fond of GSF and the general group pairings in bandom, because the results are always so interesting (read: hot and/or emotionally fraught.) I am especially fond of putting these four people in any combination, and in my opinion, this is the perfect possible encapsulation of their relationships with each other. It's a messy, uncertain-yet-strangely-certain, happily-ever-after love story for the real world. ( Excerpt )All their personal belongings have intertwined

Fandom: DUE SOUTH Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski Length: 7,066 words Author on LJ: 2corbiesAuthor Website: 2corbies at AO3. Why this must be read: because it's an amazing AU that manages to realistically and deftly portray Benton Fraser as a FtM transgendered person. 2corbies weaves the threads of the story between Ray and Fraser on their quest for the hand of Franklin and Benton's childhood, from the last time he wore a dress to his meeting with a sympathetic and understanding doctor to his experiences at Depot. Additionally, 2corbies subtly twists canon events to reflect Fraser's new reality and add whole new shades of meaning to those events. A fascinating, thoughtful read, made moreso by 2corbies steady storytelling. ( A taste... )Transcanada
