Now, there's a lot of good Gaeta/Baltar fic around. While this one doesn't exactly offer any new insights, unexpected plot twists or whatever else might make you rec a fic, it is pretty. It's just so pretty. blue_crow brought to us this letter authentically, on Colonial paper, including Galactica's logo and bad writing when Baltar stops paying attention. Fandom: SUPERNATURAL Pairing: Sam/Jess Length: 1797 words Author on LJ: lassiterfics Why this must be read: In this short but poignant fic, Sam starts smoking, and that little act of rebellion ends up saying a lot about his relationships with his family, with Jess, and with normality. The author manages to portray Sam both as legitimately frustrated with his lack of control, and also as the bratty younger brother that he can sometimes be. I like how he's determined to get better in this, and how Hutch is determined to spend every moment he can beside Starsky as he struggles through setbacks. This author has such an engaging way in her writing that makes me want to read what she's written. For me, her guys are very much how I envision them interacting. Please note that the author didn't rate this story, so I've used my best judgment and rated it PG-13. A little taste of the fic: Sometimes I thought dying would've been a whole lot easier than this.

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS UK Pairing: Sam/Gene Length: 774 words Author on LJ: catwalksaloneAuthor Website: First We Show Up - Then We See What HappensWhy this must be read: This is elegant and evocative and just a little strange, like the show. It manages to be beautiful and creepy in equal measure as we see Gene trying to bring Sam back from the brink of oblivion through Sam's drug-addled and crazed eyes. It makes excellent use of nursery rhymes and songs to add an eerieness that works counterpoint to blistering heat. Fandom: MARVEL COMICS Pairing: Steve Rogers/James "Bucky" Barnes. Length: one shot Author on IJ: devilc Author Website: http://members.cox.net/devilc/index2.htmlWhy this must be read: Most Cap/Bucky fic assumes Bucky and Steve are comfortable and secure in their sexualities, even going back to World War II. While I think that's a pretty awesome indication of how fandom views the men, I like this fic because it provides a realistic alternate interpretation. Bucky comes across as a very realistic teen/early20-year-old in love with his best friend in the middle of a war in this fic. The war is first and foremost in his thoughts, and everything in the story is judged by how it will affect the war. But underneath that, there's a growing realization that he's not 100% comfortable with. Snippet: He's Steve's friend. Steve's only friend in a sea of acquaintances, admiring troops, and very grateful French.
Only, lately, he's not just Steve's friend. He wants something more. But he's not quite sure what it is.
But it's there.

And then there's this line, one of the best reactions to Ezra's more formal manner of speaking that I have ever seen: Vin blinked. He then gave a sigh of exasperation.
