Why this must be read: As always, trouble befalls the crew of the good ship Serenity...but this time the usual heroes are all out of play, so it's up to Simon, Wash, and Kaylee to save the day. This wonderful short romp is light-hearted, fun, full of fine characterizations, and infused with all the found-family joy that I adore. Wash, in particular, is perfectly portrayed in this. It's especially wonderful to see this particular group of characters banding together and finding out how to use their strengths to be the big damn heroes they're not even sure they can be, because it's good to see the second string of heroes get the limelight once in a while. It's great to be reminded that they are each awesome in their own ways, and Ana does a wonderful job of depicting that. Of course, Ana's touch with the Firefly 'verse is always delightful, and this story is a lovely example of that.

Why this must be read: Chris starts experimenting with his sexuality; Zach helps (despite some reluctance at times). This series (and it's sequel) is what everyone is talking about in the Pinto fandom. I knew I was going to select it from the moment I was asked to drive the van, and I've been thinking about what to write all month. I find the words don't come easily when it comes to this story. Because this story? this is all emotion baby.

This is a story with significant D/s themes and major S&M moments, and yet when I think about this story, all I remember is how it made me feel. It's like emotional porn- I just feel so much when reading this. I am happy and sad and terrified and joyful and proud and anxious at various points in the story- and yet, I don't feel manipulated because every emotion is earned. (And if D/s themes and major S&M moments concerns you, please still consider reading. The author is especially careful with us, the readers- there is a slow progression and much discussion within the story itself, and each chapter is well labeled with warns/potential triggers)

As I said near the start, I have tended to rec Dan/Ror fics but there's really much more to the fandom and people are generally open to different ships. One thing I regret is not including some of the great 63! fic: something about Watchmen makes it particularly amenable to this sort of play.

Why this must be read:
Many writers have explored the Walter/Rorschach split identity--but none quite like this: instead of just a mask, Walter Kovacs makes a full body doll out of the fabric which takes on a life of its own and becomes Rorschach. [livejournal.com profile] bane_6  is exceptionally good at suspense and action--her stories take hold and pull the reader along and does this with great characterisation and pacing. This story is no exception, the complex relationship between Walter and Rorschach is well-developed and I especially like how it suggests that the two are not as distinct as they appear:

"What are you?" [Dan]

The question made Rorschach falter as being impaled on a sword hadn't. He made a sound, fidgeting, then lifted his arm to look at the slash for a moment. It had nearly taken the arm off, he realized, slicing him from chest to armpit. He took the edges in his other hand, holding it closed. Walter could fix it, sew him up good as new, fix the coat, and all the clothes underneath, but Nite Owl might never trust him again. That upset Rorschach more than he thought it would. All this time, he had thought it was Walter hero-worshiping the man in the owl suit, but the thought of Nite Owl cringing from him, thinking he was unnatural, not being his partner any more made a coldness open up under his shifting skin.

Thiis little story has been a fave of mine for years. Again, it takes a popular TS theme and does a superb job to make it fresh, and it's still hot and fun after all these years.

Written from Blair's pov, it details his difficulty with lusting after Jim. Once, he accompanied Jim to the gym, but being in such proximity to his sweaty, well-muscled friend was too disconcerting. So, this time when Jim goes to the gym alone, Blair is free to fantasize about him, and happily goes to his room for a little personal time with images of the man of his dreams.

Vera's style is light-hearted and her Blair is amusingly self-deprecating.

Why this must be read:

Once again, I'm reccing a classic. This one, by Rosemary, was originally published in the zine, Primal Instincts, Volume 3. This came out years ago and thus doesn't suffer from the kind of fanon influence so many stories have today (aside from the use of the 'big guy' nickname, which is employed by the author in... ahem... context). It begins early in the relationship, set a couple of months into the series, and progress past the "Attraction" episode, in which Jim's pheromones overwhelm him and he begins a relationship with a woman involved in criminal activities. Along the way, we are given an unusual entree into the slash relationship, inevitable problems due to the woman, Laura McCarthy and resolution with a happy ending.

Why this must be read:

This is another kink!Jim story, one I come back to time and time again. Kass gives us a relationship between Jim and Blair that is comfortable after five years, and a Jim who has begun remembering a "hazing incident" from his early army days. Doubtfully, he tells Blair about it and admits he'd like them to try it.

Jim's memory is hot and his hesitancy to tell Blair about his fantasies is believable. Jim is surprised by Blair's immediate acceptance and willingness to give him what he wants.

This isn't a Jim Ellison who needs to get hurt to make up for having to be in control all the time, he's just a man who's been dreaming of a past experience that made him sexually turned on. When Blair gives him what he asks for, it's spectacular and he realizes he's not a young man in a darkened barracks, but safe in his own room with his own loving partner.

Why this must be read: This is a Gathering fic and there are Character Deaths as a warning. I like this because for all that it is a Gathering fic, it is not overly angsty. The Gathering comes and Duncan fights. And in the end, he finds out what the Quickening is and what the "Prize" is. Pollyanna uses sparse words to describe the Gathering and what it's like for Duncan as he makes his way through it all. And the epilogue has a nice little surprise, which I won't spoil.

Why this must be read:  Because it rounds off my brief taster selection of "couples" with a short, sharp hit of messy complexity.  Some of my other recs have focused more on the positive aspects of coupledom.  This one shines an exacting light on the difficulties.  The author writes in a number of fandoms but this seems to be her only Mag7 piece.  For something so brief it’s remarkably insightful.

I’ve found it quite hard this month not to always have Chris as one half of my chosen couples *g*  Despite being the bad element and a tragic one at that, he seems perfect for pairing - perhaps because he’s the character focus of the show and because we know for sure that he, of all of them, has been part of a stable union in a previous life.  In canon he even makes an abortive attempt to recreate the same kind of happiness  he had with his wife, but makes the potentially fatal mistake of engaging with a madwoman.  Hopefully by the end of the show’s run he’s realized he’d be better off with Vin or Buck or Ezra :))  Anyway, here he is being an enigma, and finding his partner an enigma.

Chris knew everyone thought he was the uncommunicative one, but he also knew the real master of miscommunication in their little band was Ezra.

Why this must be read: Well here we are at the end of November and the end of my stint driving the crack van for Life on Mars. There may be a few more dents and scratches than there were when I took to the wheel, but nothing that won't be right as rain with a drop of Turtle Wax and a damp shammy. I've had a great time and hope that some of the van passengers have discovered or rediscovered one or two favourites along the way. Maybe even fallen for the fandom.

For my last rec I'm going to cheat a bit, and why not? [livejournal.com profile] moogle62 has written more than one Mars fic, but only posted one on the [livejournal.com profile] lifein1973 com. This, however, is not it. Bit of a double cheat there, but it's worth it because this is a perfect Sam and Gene moment that damned well should have been canon. It's heartbreakingly sad, but worry not for there is hope at the end. A gorgeous great big Gene Hunt shaped lump of hope. And that's exactly as it should be.

In a shop window with green paint on the window ledge and a battered wooden door, there had been a camel coat at the very front of the display and Sam had stared, and stared, and stared.

Then he'd turned back to the street, walked back to his car, put his head on his steering wheel, and cried.

This is from one of my very favorite authors; I had a hard time choosing a particular fic, but this one fit in with the theme of some of my other recs. This story (like all the author's other works) is lyrical, beautiful, and terribly romantic.

This fic features Michael from Something Wicked as he joins the hunting world thanks to the Winchester's influence, and sets out on a journey to find Dean who is on his own search for his missing brother.

Apparently, I decided this was threesome month, but this whole 'verse has always been one of my favorites from the day I first started reading. I absolutely love stories that expand the Supernatural 'verse beyond just the Wincesters (hence my love for Claire Novak and Ben) and into the future. But in addition to an excellent set up, Elle has quite the way with words. She weaves an intriguing story as well as revealing tidbits about the characters and their relationships in a truly lovely manner that really sets the mood of the piece. I absolutely love Michael in this whole series. She manages to develop a character we knew very little about and make him fully fleshed out and believable at an older age, as well as having his relationship with Dean be organic.

Her prose is wonderful, the sex burning hot, and the characterizations excellent. A fantastic read.

Christmas stories are always my favorite and I thought this would be a good note to end on with Christmas nearly around the corner.

This story was written before "A Very Supernatural Christmas" and thus has a more positive interpretation of Winchester Christmases, but the author creates some lovely visuals, and a convincing back story. The pacing is slow and perfect, the sex sweet, the underlying sentiment beautiful.
