Fandom: Lord Peter Wimsey Pairing: Harriet/Peter Length: 1800 words Author on LJ: lopezuna_writes Why this must be read: For all my occasional wanderings in the wilder realms of the Lord Peter Wimsey fandom, I nonetheless still love the more canon-compliant sort of story, and that perhaps closest to canon genre, the missing scene fic. Here, lopezuna_writes has carved a gem of a piece (intaligo Wimsey mice) as Harriet deals with the aftermath of the Wilvercombe mystery of Have His Carcase and its personal, professional, and legal fall-out. It's very much a character-driven story, a study of a pre- Gaudy Night Harriet, irritable, hurt and hurting, and still not quite able to get rid of Peter. Harriet did not mention her European trip to Wimsey. She told herself that it was none of his business, and that he had no claim to know where she went or what she did - and in justice, she had to admit he had never asserted such a claim. But the thought that she was planning to disappear once again without telling him, this time for a prolonged period, made her feel curiously furtive. In consequence, she was more than usually bad-tempered on the occasions when they met, and let him know in no uncertain terms that if he thought their prolonged and frequent interactions at Wilvercombe had set a precedent for the future, he was bound to be disappointed. Wimsey responded with his usual imperturbable urbanity, leaving her with an unreasonable desire to hit him.Read it here.

Fandom: PRIMEVAL Pairing: Ryan/Lester/Nick, Abby/Connor Length: Approximately 15,000 Author on LJ: talliw Author Website: None Why this must be read: This story was written for the Secret Santa last year in one of the Primeval communities and it’s a perfect seasonal story combining elements of German myth and ancient custom into a story that takes the Primeval team on a trip abroad. The blend of the normal and the supernatural in this story is immensely skilful and the author’s descriptions are always so very vivid that you feel you’re watching a film unfold before your eyes. It really is the perfect story for Christmas Eve. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3

Fandom: SHERLOCK Pairing: John/Sherlock Length: approximately 6,200 words Author on LJ: spikefaceAuthor Website: I am unaware of whether this author has their work archived somewhere or not (please comment and I'll link to it, if there is a place), but more of their stories can be found on their LiveJournal under the fanfic tag. Why this must be read:This story is told from Sherlock's point-of-view through his unreliable, sociopathic perspective as he tries to figure out just why John Watson is so fascinating to him. I adore stories where he's a dark, scary man (and John likes him because of it, not in spite of it). Warnings for violence, dark thoughts, and blood/knife play. Autopsis

Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/OMC, Helen/James UST Length: 3,260 words Author on LJ: rowan_dAuthor Website: Rowan Darkstar @ ff.net, Fic TagWhy this must be read: Helen's had many friends and lovers throughout the years and has had to suffer through much inevitable loss. And although she's gone through it time after time, I can imagine it being just as painful each time, whether due to death or departure. In this fic, Rowan does a lovely job depicting the aftermath of a breakup. I love the relationship Rowan created for Helen and the reason it broke up. I also love James in this fic, his unspoken love for Helen, and the fact that he bought a convertible just because Helen liked it. A lovely and insightful drive through the night for James and Helen. Fandom: SANCTUARY Pairing: Helen/John Length: 2,605 words Author on LJ: artaxastraAuthor Website: artaxastra @ AO3, Tag ListWhy this must be read: artaxastra's specialty is writing incredible fics that provide such insights into characters that after I finish reading, suddenly the show makes more sense. It's really brilliant. This fic is a post-ep for Pavor Nocturnus, featuring a wonderful conversation between Helen and John as they tiptoe around the topic of Ashley. Such a loaded conversation, each word a potential mine. artaxastra really gets Helen, and the last sentence is a wonderful revelation for Helen that works so well for her character. "It's my house," she said. "I do as I please. This is not 1880." She settled back, her back against the sofa pillows, his arm still behind her, her legs across his. "It's only that I've been more circumspect lately. I didn't want to set a poor example."
For Ashley. The words hung unsaid in the air between them.
"Heaven forbid," he said, and the amusement in his eyes encompassed every ploy and stratagem they'd employed to avoid chaperonage, every entirely unsuitable liberty. Only he hadn't smiled like that then. He hadn't carried all of this in his bright, untroubled eyes. Second Summer

Fandom: THE BIG BANG THEORY Pairing: Sheldon/Penny Length: 3.9k Author on LJ: montycrowleyAuthor Website: Fic PostWhy this must be read:It's almost impossible to rec The Big Bang Theory without wanting to highlight everything montycrowley puts words to with big neon lights flashing READ THIS NOW. This fic takes an AU premise that Penny isn't the Penny we all know and love, and rolls on from there in a firecracker ride of angst, disbelief, double crosses and sex with a heartache killer ending. Read it and take a breath, because you'll need to. ( an excerpt )Pandora's Mask

Fandom: RIPTIDE Pairing: Nick Ryder/Cody Allen Length: 1600 words Author on LJ: seraphina_snapeAuthor Website: thewordyplagueWhy this must be read:Well, first of all, it's Christmas time, so it's time for some Christmas fic. This is a pretty story. At the Pier 56 Christmas party, Nick and Cody really can't leave early... but they can't wait either. Murray is very Murray, which is awesome. It's a PWP, but it's beautifully drawn--the party's very real--and the tiny details, from Cody's Christmas sweater to Nick's thoughts about Sunny's tits are all perfectly in place. If you're looking for a Christmas warm-up, this is the place to go :) All I Want For Christmas

Fandom: WAREHOUSE 13 Length: 443 Author's Web Site: Fanfiction.netWhy this must be read:There's one of these in every fandom. Sometimes they are written in a traditional fashion. Sometimes they take on elements from the show. I think Warehouse 13 is possibly the best fandom ever that could be mixed with The Night Before Christmas. Of course Santa has an artifact. It explains so much! :) Happy Holidays everybody! Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the bed and breakfast, not a creature was stirring…except Pete who was hiding Myka's necklace. The agents' stockings were hung by the chimney with care, so anyone breaking and entering would pass out due to a lack of clean air.

Fandom: The Losers Pairing: Gen Length: 2843 Author on LJ: found_featherAuthor's Website: AO3Why this must be read:This is the start of a rather varied and epic series, with a stunning long plotty gen epic in the middle and some delightful little vignettes of romance. But this is something totally different. What we have here is an utterly heartbreaking story of what happens at home, with Jensen's niece and sister dealing with the loss of Jensen, with the world breaking around them. It's sharp, it's emotional and it's a wonderful start to an amazing series. Excerpt: Mr Velazquez tapped her on the shoulder, really lightly; Beth jumped and turned around. He looked worried; he'd been her teacher last year, and she liked him. He was really tall, so sometimes he crouched down when he talked to you, and this was one of them; he asked, "Beth? Is something wrong?"
Beth opened her mouth to say no. Or maybe yes. Or maybe I need my Mom, the news says my uncle's dead.
Instead what comes out is a noise and she just bursts into tears. Preludes and FuguesPart of the Partial Harmonics series
