Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Gen (but intended pre-Brendon/Spencer/Bob)
Length: 14,648
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bootson
Author Website: lj masterlist
Why this must be read:

Another genre that bandom love to explore is slave fic. There are some truly wonderful ones out there. This one by bootson is a terrific addition to that list if slave fic is something you like to read. There's hurty bits and also hopeful bits. Plus lots of different bandom people show up. Also nothing is easily fixed and there's a good amount of negative thinking that just doesn't turn on it's head and become ideas of ponies and rainbows. That doesn't mean the story is depressing because if anything, it's hopeful and every time I reread it I want to know more.

So two posts in a row might be too much, but I don't want to forget, so I wanted to go ahead and get my last rec for the month out here. I was really hoping to rec more than five fics but apparently having a destructive storm at the end of April meant a lot of hours at work dealing with things. Then a concert and being sick. So yeah, May...where did it go?

Fandom: BANDOM
Pairing: Spencer/Brendon/Ryan
Length: 4,243

Author Website: journal on ij*fic is found through tags*
Why this must be read:

Something about Gala that never ceases to amaze me is the fact that she's inventive with her ideas. When I first got handed the keys to May's rec van I knew I needed to rec something of hers, but it's hard to pick what is a good example of how hard she rocks at things. There's so many stories where she dazzles. In the end, I decided to choose her story that skews fairytale godmothers. She blends a modern world with mild fantasy elements very well. Add in the idea that fairy godmothers are curse givers and you have something made of awesome. Her bbPanic! work so well in the story. This was the fic that I remember as my first real introduction to Gala and it does not disappoint at all.

04:04 pm Brethren of the Coast by Rebelcat, NC-17
With apologies to you all who were eagerly awaiting Pros Recs this month, it seems that getting married and its aftermath is a little more stressful and time-consuming than I originally thought. So, with only two days to go, it looks like I'm only going to be able to fit in my contractual minimum this month, which is a shame as there's many fabulous stories I won't be able to fit in.

But enough about me, here's the first rec.

Fandom: THE PROFESSIONALS
Pairing: Bodie/Ray Doyle
Length: 7,300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] myrebelcat
Author Website: Rebelcat's The Professionals Stories
Why this must be read:

Not an AU, but an extended metaphor, Rebelcat seamlessly weaves the risks and uncertainties of the day-to-day CI5 existence with the risks and uncertainties of falling in love, with added pirates (because everything is better with pirates!) It's a right rollicking read, with possibly one of the most (deliberately) laugh-out-loud sex scenes in the fandom.

06:21 pm Flooding Rains by Ayla Pascal (R)
Fandom: HARRY POTTER
Pairing: Petunia Evans (Dursley)/Lily Evans (Potter)
Length: 1058 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] curia_regis
Author Website: FF.net | LJ
Why this must be read:

Ayla is my favourite HP ficwriter, so I have to recommend at least one of her stories. It wasn't easy to choose only one among so many good fics, but I picked this one because it's a good introduction to her writing style for those who aren't familiar with it. In this fic, intense emotions are conveyed in an elegant, concise manner. Petunia's jealousy and pain feel so real, that it's hard not to sympathise with her even if she's far from being a likable person. The Lily we see through her eyes doesn't seem to be as happy as suggested in canon, which adds to the angst and makes the fic all the more intriguing.

Before I give my last rec, I just want to thank everyone for letting me drive you all over Manchester this month. It’s been a blast! I encourage you all to go sign up for your turn at the wheel!

Fandom: LIFE ON MARS (UK)

Why this must be read:

Author’s summary: The Gene Genie knows.

This fic showcases a kind of Hunt we very rarely see: smart!Hunt. [livejournal.com profile] ariastar treats us to a Hunt who is every bit as smart and capable as Sam and is still perfectly in character. Primarily introspection, though featuring a bit of dialogue between Hunt and Annie, this fic is an analysis of Sam from Hunt’s surprisingly perspective point of view. Hunt didn’t get to be DCI for nothing.

Why this must be read:

This is a story recently posted for the Merry Month of Masturbation (which has a LJ comm, [livejournal.com profile] mmom, that's worth a visit). It's part of a series in which the Burkes and Neal Caffrey are in a polyamorous relationship, but works as a standalone piece. In this frank, funny fic, a very pregnant El tries to get things moving, and hey, even if it doesn't work, at least she can have some fun trying. Or can she?
This was so not going into the Baby Memory Book. )

10:10 pm The Dubious Magic of the Season by Ainm (R)

Well, the month has flown by and it’s time for my last rec. I hope you found something to enjoy and perhaps even discovered some new stories or authors. Thanks for coming along on the ride and cheers until next time.

Fandom: THE SENTINEL
Pairing: Blair/Jim
Length: 40K
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ainm
Author Website: at her LJ and at the 852 prospect archive

Why this must be read: It’s got humor, camaraderie, joys of the holiday season and just a touch of angst to balance things out.

Blair is burnt out and looking forward to vegetating for winter break. Too bad it’s Poker Night at the loft. Looking forward to bonding with the Major Crime people perks him up. But when a parade of “others” start knocking on the door, his mood quickly darkens:

knock, knock -- who's there? )

Will Blair use Jim’s gun to scare away the unwanted visitors? Or does he have a more imaginative way in mind?  Read this parfait of a story to find out. Enjoy.

11:08 pm The Monogram: An Epistolary Mystery, by neifile7 and accomplices (PG)
Fandom: WHITE COLLAR
Pairing: Gen (refs to canon pairings)
Length: ~4400 words
Warnings: Art geekery liek woah (very image-heavy). Shopping porn. Horrific puns and naming wordplay.
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] neifile7
Author Website: Fic masterlist
Why this must be read:

When a possible Manet forgery turns up at a Parisian auction house, Interpol calls on our favorite (alleged) forger and his FBI handler for assistance. Will Neal resist the many temptations of Paris? Can Peter dodge a trip to Dior Homme? Is the painting a cunning fake, or a lost masterpiece?

This clever casefic grew out of an interesting collaboration: the primary author, [livejournal.com profile] neifile7, sent postcards from "Neal" or "Peter" to various people. The recipients wrote replies in the voice of whichever character the postcards had been addressed to, and included the cards in tableaux which they photographed. The results were finally assembled into a charming, slightly melancholy, postmodern mystery/art history essay/travelogue/comedy.
