perverse_idyll back again to drive the Harry Potter van off the beaten path. Usually I'm all about reccing Snape fic, but this time around I want to explore unfamiliar byways, with lesser-known characters brought vividly to life by writers of extraordinary skill. I may still sneak my favorite Potions master in before the end, but the competition is stiff. Furthermore, the majority of this month's recs will be femslash. \o/

Well, except for the first two. I want to start the month with a rare pairing by one of my favorite writers.

Why this must be read:
I've never given much thought to Big D except as Harry's buffoonish and bullying cousin, and Piers is scarcely a blip on my radar. So you could say, when I clicked on this story, that I wasn't exactly looking to buy, and the fact that I went from zero to sixty in my love for these boys sent me into an aesthetic tizzy. A writer who can do that to me has my undying devotion.

It's been a year since the Dursley family disappeared from Privet Drive. Nobody seems able to recall them, except for Piers, who misses Dudley like blazes. This fic, set a week after the final Battle of Hogwarts, is the story of their reunion. Such a feast of words and such funny, insightful, ventriloqual, canon-transcendent and canon-perfect characterizations. These are rude, semi-articulate teenagers, ordinary and extraordinary, touched by magical matters that lie outside their ken. They will make you laugh and perhaps grimace a little with fondness. The language is visceral and individual and informal, a poetics of slang and inadvertent truths. Among the various pleasures is a smattering of marvelously physical sex between imperfect lads, perfectly phrased in the vulgar but desperately affectionate idiom of bosom pals. For me it was one of the brightest jewels of this year's hp_beholder, and reading it made me happy.

And what I really, really like about this series is the slow pacing, the way the relationship is growing and getting stronger. We see all their doubts and their fears, and we keep asking ourselves: will they find a way?

Why this must be read: The Sentinel is a fandom that lends itself easily and well to AUs and one of the popular genres is movieverse. Frequency is a wonderful example of this genre. While there's no mistaking the movie it's based on, it's still more Jim and Blair than the movie characters. All our favorite supporting characters are there as well and it's an intriguing case story to boot.

Why this must be read:

First stop this month, Russia. One of the things that appeals to me about The Man from Uncle is its milieu; the 1960's, spies in the midst of the Cold War. The Cat's Meow takes advantage of the suspicions and uncertain alliances of the era as Illya and Napoleon fly to Moscow after Illya receives a message from an old school friend; a friend he isn't sure he can still trust.

Richly nuanced and powerful, the story is full of unexpected twists. We get glimpses of Illya's past and the many layers of loss and betrayal that shaped his life; his need to trust and remain true to something in spite of it. We get Mr. Waverly as the ultimate spymaster, the role that suits him best; and we get the generosity of spirit and moments of wry humor that always leaven Annie's tales.

“Do we know who sent it?” Illya asked.

Waverly’s frown deepened. “Mr. Solo?”

“Security hasn’t come up with anything yet, Sir,” said Napoleon. “The mailman’s polygraph came up clean, so they’re backtracking to the Post Office.” He shook his head. “Who knows how many ways that envelope could have been slipped in with the mail?” 

Illya pulled a sheet of paper from the envelope. Like the envelope, it was unremarkable. Unless one cared that the three words were Cyrillic: ‘Ленин говорит, мяуканье’. Abruptly, Illya stood, a mixture of surprise and disbelief on his face. Lifting the letter, Illya turned to Mr. Waverly. “Lenin govorit, myaukan’e. Lenin says meow.”

I wish I could say I was driving like a true Professional, but the truth is I've had no practice making handbrake turns whilst under fire (although I can do a nicely controlled spin on snow). Why this must be read: This is one of my favorite Pros stories. I read it early in my Pros obsession, and it has held up through all these years. It features two separate case stories with fully developed plots, and a complex, shifting relationship between the lads that is grounded in trust. But when that trust is tested, due to one of the cases, there is a gradual buildup of tension that grips the reader just as much as it grips the lads. And when it explodes, in a glorious confrontation between Bodie and Doyle, well, it is for me one of the most satisfying first time stories. *g*

Why this must be read:

It's a pairing that should never ever happen but it has been so well written you can't help but love it.  Its dirty, its depraved, it's filled with hate-sex, angst and unrequited love/lust.  But most importantly of all it is believable.

It goes into the reasons of why Gene tollerated Warren for so long and looks into their perculiar relationship and the effect Sam's arrival has upon it.

It feels real for the 70's, it touches on how underground and small the gay community is causing people to find peculiar bed fellows because they were the only option for release as going for those that you truly desire is too risky.
