Well former secret pleasure now that is. phreakycat has written a fantastic, if slightly dark, look into Neal's past for their first foray in the White Collar fandom. I think this bodes well for future stories from this author. Full of angst, moments of darkness, and finally a happy ending this story is a excellent look at Neal's past and how it effects his future. The title of this fic is from Depeche Mode's Clean. Run it in the background whilst reading this story and it adds yet another layer to this already amazing story. Excerpt: "When he’s seven, a boy named Hunter invites Neal over for the night. Hunter has a cool name, and a slingshot, and a Batman lunchbox. He lives in a green house with flowers out front, and inside he has two parents who are still married and who smile real smiles with white, even teeth. Their kitchen smells like baking bread and there are pictures on the walls.
Everything is clean and warm and full of love, and Neal can’t imagine wanting to be anywhere else, even if their white carpets make him feel dirty, like he’s in danger of leaving stains wherever he steps.
When he gets home, Neal pulls dusty bottles of Windex and bleach out from under their leaking sink and sets to cleaning the kitchen. He imagines how it will look when he’s done, gleaming and white and full of afternoon sun. A place where people will smile and bake bread and hang pictures. Torchwood's very existence caused one, because its existence begged the question: if there has been a secret-and-powerful alien-fighting organization since 1879 whose primary mandate is capturing the Doctor, what the heck is the Doctor doing running around with UNIT in the 1970's and 80's as a scientific consultant? Either Torchwood didn't know about the Third Doctor's time marooned on Earth (in the UK) with UNIT, or something prevented them from carrying out their mandate. We follow Ray as he goes through his days, fantasizing about Fraser in "Erik"'s lonely apartment, parking across the street from the Consulate while Fraser's doing sentry duty and thinking sexy thoughts about his partner, and finally we get see Ray at a gig as part of his undercover work as a guitar player in a punk band. But who's that tall dark and handsome stranger in the crowd... Everything in this story's sweet and loving, but pay attention to the tags at the top if you're sensitive about kink or, at least, non-vanilla m/m. That said, it's one of the best--if not the best--kid fic in this fandom, for the simple fact that it's charming, heart-warming and shows the guys in a new and unusual situation but still very much in character. The story deals with a serious subject matter (hence the character death warning), but it does so in a life-affirming way. The OC in this story is absolutely amazing and makes you fall in love with her, whether you want to or not. ;) And the ending gets me every single time.
