Pairing:
Length: ~27,000 word total
Author on LJ: enigmatic_blue

Why this must be read:

This fic explores what might have happened if one the government agencies did not believe Blair's press conference. After Jim is kidnapped, and rescued with assistance from SG-1, the guys have to determine a new direction. Good interactions between the guys, with SG-1, and some action make this story a great read.

Why this must be read:

This hilarious cross just made me grin and laugh like the sh*ts!!! Two cryptic individuals (Aslan and Kilgarrah) converse after a hard day confusing the bejeezus out of their charges and shoot awesome enigmatic one-liners back and forth, all the while coming to an answer to the mystery of the universe. ..... Or not! XD Just two creatures who are renown for being the all mysterious mentors of younger characters shooting the breeze with each other, confusing the heck out of each other and the readers with them, all the while making us laugh like crazy.

Pairing: Steve/Danny , Jim/Blair
Length: 13,897 words

Why this must be read:

A breathtaking cross that keeps both show's characters so IC that I could hear the lines in my head and meshes the two very different canons into a seamless whole that is the hallmark of a well written crossover. I loved seeing Blair and Jim in the role of mentors for a new Sentinal!Steve and Danny not really sure about this "Guide" stuff but willing to try to help his friend and lover. And how Jane chose to weave everything together, with the Jim and Blair bits in the past via flashbacks, and the Steve and Danny stuff in the present made for a very comprehensive timeline of events. I got more into the story because of that. Overall, a great cross between two great canons that you'll enjoy to the hilt.

Fandom: STAR TREK: REBOOT
Pairing: McCoy/Chapel
Length: 1300+ words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] oparu

Why this must be read: I'll admit to being biased about this fic -- it was written for me in last year's [livejournal.com profile] happy_trekmas exchange -- but it is also an example of everything that is good about the mirror!verse. [livejournal.com profile] oparu's Chapel is determined to survive, to get what she wants, and to trust in something, no matter how dangerous that might be.

Fandoms: THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN/THE QUEST
Pairing: Chris/Ezra
Characters: Chris, Vin, Buck, Ezra, Nathan, J.D., Josiah, Morgan 'Two Persons' Beaudine, Quinton Beaudine
Length: 6,233
Author on lj: n/a
Author website: istia on A03

Why this must be read: Well, because it's a beautifully crafted and intelligent story.  And because it's delightful to see the short-lived 1976 western TV show 'The Quest' (which starred Tim Matheson and Kurt Russell as two reunited brothers searching for their sister) remembered and featured in high-quality fic.  The show crosses over with Mag7 very neatly; not just because they're both stories of the old west, but very much because of their shared themes.  It was written for an 'amnesia' prompt, but it's much more than that - a wonderful look at identity, recognition, insecurity and family.

But he should know them, if they were what they said, even if he couldn't bring their names to mind.  You had to know who to trust just like you could trust your gun and your horse not to let you down.  His gun had slid into his hand with instant familiarity; he felt in his gut he'd know a true friend in the same instinctive way.

He'd known his gun and he needed that same certainty about a man before he'd take a gamble with his life.

Title: Scenes from a Cultural Exchange, or The Muppets Take New Burbage by LovelyPoet
Pairing: none
Length: 2300 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lovelypoet
Author Website: Fic at AO3
Why this must be read:  You have to ask? Slings & Arrows + The Muppets = one of the most funniest, stories I read in 2011. I knew this would be a crack_van rec as soon I finished reading it.

LovelyPoet's Yuletide fic is a series of vignettes about an unusual acting troupe's visit to New Burbage. She matches the Muppets with their Slings & Arrows counterparts so well (Miss Piggy and Ellen!), and the result is a comic gem that meshes perfectly within the wackier elements of S&A. It's sheer crack, yet it feels like it could be canon-compliant. I would happily read more about the Muppet's New Burbage season.

04:20 pm A Fortuitous Meeting by Alicia M (PG-ish)
I know, I know this is such a late start on my recs this month, and I do apologize for it. However, I hope that the recs I offer will ameliorate the situation. For behold, I bring Jane Austen fiction recommendations!

Fandom: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy; Charles Bingley/Jane Bennet
Length: 94,000 words
Author on LJ: Unknown
Author Website: The Bennet Girls

Why this must be read:

I start with this lovely fic. It is a great example of a simple divergence in the plot of Pride and Prejudice, a "what if," if you will. What if Charles Bingley had encountered Jane Bennet while she stayed in London the winter after the Netherfield Ball? (Recall that she went to London to try to raise her spirits at Bingley's apparent desertion of her.) This story is the answer to that question.

Bingley meeting Jane neatly solves half of the romantic problems of Pride and Prejudice, but Elizabeth still despises Darcy, and he still has not learnt that his pride is a real problem for him. They must go through the learning process, but the setting and the pace of said process is quite different this time around, and quite delightful, too. No one can match Jane Austen's skill and wit, of course, but it's still fun to read others' attempts.

Alicia has been a prodigious writer of P&P fiction, and I think this story is a good representation of her overall writing. She has also thrown in a couple of Austen crossovers. Look for some characters from Northanger Abbey as well as a sly cameo of a character from Emma.

Why this must be read: This crossover is one I never would have thought of, and yet, Benton Fraser and Conrad Weller being polite at each other in a bar fills me with glee. And the ending reduces me to undignified giggling.

Title: After Fortinbras, by Brigantine
Pairing: Ellen Fanshaw/Geoffrey Tennant, Ray Kowalski
Length: 3250 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] brigantine1 (also on DW)
Author Website: Fic at AO3
Why this must be read:

Geoffrey and Ellen pick up a stray: Ray, who's gone on a walkabout of sorts.

First, you need to know this is a corollary fic or sequel to [livejournal.com profile] katallison's due South story, Go Gentle (warning: have tissue on standby). After Fortinbras is the perfect balm to Go Gentle, a hopeful story that'll leave you weepy, but in a good way. She nails the characters: Ray's bruised and grieving, and looking for new purpose to keep going. Ellen's nurturing but still prickly and very much Ellen. Geoffrey's terrified and excited, but willing to take a leap of faith fueled by the need to see what happens next. All three relationships, Geoffrey and Ellen's as well as the one they each begin to form with Ray, shine through.

Pairing: McCoy/Chapel
Length: 300+
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] fringedweller

Why this must be read: Brief, but sweet, this is a lovely little moment-in-time fic where the only downfall is that it makes you wish there was more to it so you could find out what happened both before and after.

Title: Day of the Starship by [livejournal.com profile] mizubyte

Pairing: Gabe/William and Nate/Victoria but mostly gen

Length: 15,821

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] mizubyte

Author Website: Her Masterlist and Her AO3 Page.

Why this must be read:

Robots, evil aliens, grouchy teenagers and a mission to save the planet, this is a fic with a premise so cracky that just reading the summary might make you pull this kind of face O_o.

However, [livejournal.com profile] mizubyte weaves a story with great characterizations of the various bands (Cobra Starship, FOB and MCR.) Lots of great dialog and a neat plot make up a fic that silences skeptics about seeing two very different fandoms meshing.

Planet Earth might stand a chance after all.
