Hi! I'm Laurie laurie_ky and I'll be behind the wheel for the next few weeks. I came late to the Sentinel fandom, (2007), but man, what a treasure trove of stories I found, plus the wonderful new stories I've read since then. I'm starting with one that, frankly, I was surprised to find hadn't already been recced. It was archived in 2000, and I fell in love with it the first time I read it.

Summary : Once upon a time, a Selkie watched the shore, and a Sentinel watched an anthropologist.

Skin entwines a fairy tale with Jim's and Blair's story, alternating from the sea and strand of Celtic mythology to the events in their lives since the day that a young man barged into an ER treatment room with an outlandish fairy tale of his own to spin to a desperate man.

Brighid's writing is poetical, insightful, and simply lovely. And as Blair is drawn more and more into Jim's world, to the point of cutting his own throat when he tells the world he is a fraud, the selkie who rescued a drowning man finds himself questioning what his own future holds.

Happy February, everybody! This is my first time driving for Mag7 and I'm excited. If you've never seen the show, all episodes are available for free streaming on Hulu.com (not available in all countries).

I'm going to start out slow but not easy, with some missing-thoughts fic from the second season episode "Vendetta".

Why this must be read: It gives gut-wrenching insight to one of the Nichols brothers, minor characters who are rarely painted in fic as anything other than stock-standard villanous. By making Peter so human as he observes our young Casey, Mendax succeeded in making my skin crawl while making me feel badly for him, all at the same time. Impressive.

She really is a pretty little thing. Peter almost feels foolish for having mistaken her for a boy, except girls just don’t go around in trousers and beat-up boss hats. At least not in Kansas City.

He grins as he mentally hears the words the way she spoke them, all lit up with a thousand daydreams made of unformed yearning and romantic notions.

He is more interested, of course, in the way she leans toward him as he speaks. Unformed yearning indeed.

Pretty Little Thing

Why this must be read:
In addition to mixing humor and sexiness in just the right measure, ensuring that neither cancels out the other, bisto's given us a fic that shows Sam analyzing Gene, trying to figure out how best to deal with him. And not being sure he has the right answer. This also wins for plotting!Sam, spot-on dialogue, a surprise appearance (as bisto says in her summary, "Guten tag"), and a wonderful depiction of the atmosphere in CID. 

Brief Excerpt:
Their relationship, hardly one which could have been called auspicious from the moment when Gene had dragged Sam by the lapels into the bearpit that he laughably called an office, had recently nose-dived with startling rapidity – to the point where even Ray had stopped sniggering and started to look genuinely concerned. Sam’s one attempt to address this issue, to point out the lack of professionalism and its effect on the officers around them (and, by extension, the smooth and effective operation of the team as a whole) had been met with an exhortation to ‘cut out the poncey Hyde bollocks and piss off and bother some other poor bastard.’

Taking Chances

Why this must be read: This fic is epic in every imaginable way. The author took on an enormous task, deciding to write out allllll of River Song's life, from beginning to end, from her POV. It sticks perfectly to canon, but then adds on multiple layers on top of that and weaves together a story worthy of Moffat himself. Introduces a couple of awesome original characters, emphasizes River's relationships with not only the Doctor, but Amy and Rory too, and it also speculates on the Twelfth Doctor as well. Also, there's guest appearances by Jack, Donna, Rose and Martha too, but they don't overwhelm the story or feel out of place at all, instead sliding perfectly into her storyline at very subtle moments.

Gorgeously written. Cannot recommend this one enough.

Why this must be read: Libowie can have you read a sentence and make you weep. Her writing is that good. I've read this one-shot several times and it never fails to evoke emotion in me. The story focuses on Ron and is mostly gen, with references to canon pairings. Her dialogue is perfect and you'll feel like you've been punched in the guts after reading her evocative and emotional writing.

I was actually going to rec an older comic by y0do that is one of my all time favorite pieces of fanart, but then I saw this one. This artist captures Benedict Cumberbatch like no other. The art beautiful and it may make you cry. It's also one giant SPOILER for the ending of the second series so watch The Reichenbach Fall before you click on it. Then check out y0do's other work because it's all fantastic.
